@star-one I split your truck off into its own thread the truck looks great! is that the original paint? how many miles?

it looks like your axle needs to be pushed forward a bit more. or at least the axle rotate a bit. the coil isn't straight. and since you're starting from scratch here, I would pull the coils out and make sure that the bump stop will contact the lower coil bucket properly by cycling the axle up (which is hard to do with the coil in the way).

oh right, forgot about the 44 axles. Is your caster set and burned in?

the stock shaft might be just fine. it doesn't have the same limitations as the rear shaft because the slip is in the middle rather than the end.

also, there's nothing wrong with starting in second. it's not like there are rules about always having to start in first. you'll love that extra leverage of first every time you're hauling anything heavy. also, also, if I remember right, 3.73s and 31s are the exact same as 3.07s on stock tires so 4.10s is only 1 step up from that (and the rule of thumb is that you want to go one step more to accommodate the extra weight of the bigger tires.)

it's more than you may be accustomed too. just think about the rpms of the 2.5L/auto with its 4.56s and 195 tires.

ordered some new rear bumpstops. I've given up on finding decent ones in the junkyard.

can't say I remember seeing any upgrades to the resistor packs. but I've not seen everything yet. I would pull out the resistors and inspect them. could be the plug has gone bad, could be the pack. the cover is to help prevent debris from touching the coils. they get super hot. something that the original designers hadn't thought of apparently. even with the cover they can still set a mouse nest on fire pretty easily.

also, make sure that the clamp isn't clamping right on top of the tip of the radiator output. it has to be closer to the radiator itself so it clamps down and then can't be pulled off the wide bit.

did you use a good hose clamp, or one of those pesky cheap worm style?

interesting. in what manner have they failed? is your blower motor pulling more amps than it should?

out of curiosity, are you measuring your heights using the factory method?

-will the 91 axles be the same as my 87? -------the axles should bolt in. don't assume that the brakes or bearings are the same though, so be sure to buy parts for a 91 axle. -if the rear driveshaft is from an auto will it require modification? ---------given the same engine and rear axle, the auto shaft will be about 1" shorter because the auto trans is 1" longer. the link in my signature has a link with the chart of all the different shaft lengths. -what gear ratio would be ideal for 31's? (my rear axle is 3.08 currently) ---------I prefer 4.10s, but there's a range of what can work. -what gear ratio would be ideal for 33's? (haven't decided on size yet) ---------I prefer 4.88s, but again, there's a range of what can work depending on what you plan to do with it. -I need to buy a center console with the added transfer case shifter. Are the auto/manual consoles the same? --------- I wanna say yes, but the center bit (aka the boot) will be different. -will a xj windshield fit in without modification? Is this a do-able diy job? i've replaced a couple windshields at work before but on army trucks. nothing like this. --------all XJs/MJs share the same windshield. the 97+ rubber windshield trim can be used on older Jeeps. it's a job I would gladly pay a pro to do. especially since it isn't all that much money. -i have a set of 33x12.5r15 tires/wheels. are these an option or should i stick to the 10.5's all depends on what you plan to do with the truck. -what all do i need to modify if i decide to lift for 33's? would it be reasonable to daily? would you recommend a cheap lift or new everything? -----unfortunately pretty much anything you do to the truck will make it a worse daily driver than stock. MPGs get worse, steering gets worse, acceleration gets worse, braking gets worse, noise gets worse, everything measurable gets worse. the question is where is the cutoff line for you. everyone's commutes are different, everyone's tolerances for a old truck are different.

I can't relate how lucky I feel to have that little guy. like, he was the last one in the system or some such thing. pricey, but worth it.

at this point a brand new set of 4.5" leafsprings is lookin' pretty good...

how much lift do you want? or are you purely after increasing weight capacity?
