but it never hurts to check the trans, since a lot can happen in 30 years. that exact 44 would only have been under a truck that had the 2.5L and thus are rare as hell. but a 3.07 or 3.55 geared 44 is definitely find-able and then you would just regear it.

that might be a challenge, since most bolts are only threaded for the bottom 2 inches.

I appreciate the suuggestion, but between the 2 new meds I have that cause drowsiness and my prior health issues needing a literal pick-me-up med, I try to avoid anything that might relax me any further.

bypass the brain box before you do anything else. if you suddenly get low and high working correctly, then you'll need to replace the box. then go about doing the rewire and re-bushing of the motor and linkage.

definitely looks like an AAL in there where there are 2 leafs of the same length on top of each other. the part in the second image is the Ubolt support bit that goes underneath of everything and inside the shock mount bracket. it was done away with in the later years when they simply thickened up the shock mount bracket. it can be slightly warped and still do its job perfectly well.

have someone rev the hot engine while you take a peek underneath. I didn't realize mine had gotten so bad until I ran it down to about a quart after a single long highway drive. by then it was easy to see oil dripping while idling.

I've seen so many pennies there over the years that it might have been stock. just use 1991 or older pennies do the wiring upgrades to the motors first (because you should be doing it anyways). then I would pull the brain box out and see what happens (should retain low and high). then work on the stalk.
