Awesome things to come for this nice '86! I'm excited for you. I may be a bit partial to the '86 models... just maybe. :laughin:- 165 replies

Complete renix to Ho swap
onlyinajeep726 replied to kook911's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
He will need a Renix flywheel too, or the CPS output will be unusable. Based on his initial post, he has both a Renix flywheel (since his MJ is an '87 and equipped with the BA10) and an HO flywheel (from his '91 donor). Which ever engine management system he decided to go with, he's covered. Also, to note... the Renix flywheel is the same between the BA10 and the AX15. Yes, but you kinda made it sound like he could just plunk the one drivetrain into the other one, adapt the TPS, swap the other sensors, and go... He has to make sure he swaps (or I suppose 'retains') the flywheel if he does that, which means splitting the tranny off both engines. I know a lot of guys that have been burned by not realizing they're different, and only do they find it out when it won't start after everything is buttoned up. I see now, after re-reading, how that may have been interpreted, so your point is correct. Glad you caught that. -

Complete renix to Ho swap
onlyinajeep726 replied to kook911's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you're willing to do the work, then I say do it. Only thing that is custom is the harness going to the fuel pump and tail lights. Not hard to make a custom one. Look HERE for that information. If not, just swap the drive train and swap all the Renix stuff over. Only thing you'll have to do is adapt the TPS. That modification can be found HERE, brought to you by yours truly. :laughin: Anymore questions, feel free to PM me or ask the great guys and gals here on CC. -
He's been down for a while. Rarely do you see him on any of the forums.

It's a '90, not a '91. But otherwise, nice find. -
4.0l from 2.5l motor mounts question
onlyinajeep726 replied to 87Chief's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
They're the same AFAIK. I didn't swap the passenger side when I did my engine swap. It's holding up fine. -
Does anyone have a few of these laying around in good shape? I popped mine out to repaint the actually caps, and all but the last one came out without struggle. The last one shattered into several pieces... Typical. I'd like at least two in good shape. The one in the top, right has some of the chrome ring missing... Willing to pay some, but not looking to spend a bunch. They came from the center caps pictured below:

New Project: 1988 SporTruck!
onlyinajeep726 replied to onlyinajeep726's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Well, now that I'm back at my main job and paychecks are rolling in, I'm getting more stuff knocked out on this project. Playing around in the dash, I figured out the blower motor would not come on. Got to looking and the speed switch was melted. Looked further down, and realized the blower resistor plug was subsequently melted, as well. Pulled it out, and this is what I found. PO had it out for some reason and jammed it back in, royally FUBARing it. Swapped in another one, as with a new switch. While I was in the dash, I fixed the chopped up stereo harness and installed a factory AM/FM/Cassette unit. Cassette player still works! Bought and installed a BoostWerks shifter after piecing together the OEM pieces I bought from a few of y'all here. Stuff wasn't lining up like it should have, so I said screw it and went the 'upgrade' route. Should have done that from the beginning... Afterward, I painted and reinstalled the mini console. Had to get creative with replacing the driver's side seat belt receptacle. Pulled one from an XJ, but it was a bit too short for the bench seat, so I chopped the old belt off of the metal bar, and welded said bar to the XJ one. Wired up a fog/driving light circuit and OEM electric fan override. And lastly, today, I fabricated a bracket to hang the rear-view mirror on. I admire the many foreign cars I've seen that don't affix the mirror to the windshield. Always seemed like a smarter and less problematic idea, so I cloned it on this MJ. -

I was actually fortunate enough to meet the second owner of the first 5.9L swapped MJ I had ever heard about, seen here: http://comancheclub.com/topic/17566-360-fuel-injection-build/ I saw it for sale on eBay a couple months back and it had made its way to a different part of the country (I forget where now). Here's a couple of pics from a Jeep Meet & Greet I did from 3+ years ago:- 165 replies

Yes. Instead of the studded plate, it'll bolt into the 4.0 mount. -

Brake Lever/Bar interchange
onlyinajeep726 replied to Automan2164's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was under the impression that the drum brake kits used on 35's and 44's were the same so long as the drum diameter was the same. I know some 35's came with 10" drums instead of the 9" ones, same with the 44's. I may be wrong, but that's what I have read and come to understand to be the case. -
You do? I need one. PO rigged some BS on my project MJ... PM pending.

4.0l from 2.5l motor mounts question
onlyinajeep726 replied to 87Chief's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes you have to change the driver's side motor mount to swap in a 4.0L. Check out my build thread in my signature. -
^^ Both of the ports that are "U-ed" together, go to your heater core, right behind where that overflow bottle goes. ^^ This is for your hood light, which is not there and in many cases were not even installed from factory unless it was added on. ^^ This vacuum hose goes to the heater control valve, which is not there because your heater hoses are not there (the part that is "U-ed" together) ^^ This is part of the EGR purge system. Not particularly worrisome unless the locale in which you live requires it for inspection, assuming inspections are applicable in your area. ^^ This plug goes to the temperature switch that activates the auxiliary/electric radiator fan, when/if equipped. The switch usually screws into the radiator and comes into direct contact with coolant. Once the coolant reaches around ~220-225 degrees F, it switches on and activates the fan relay, which in turn, powers the fan.

Catalytic Converter Heat Shield
onlyinajeep726 replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Light works fine. Not saying you're wrong about it throwing on the light, but it evidently didn't phase the Jeep's PCM with it unplugged. Just my observation on that particular Jeep. -

onlyinajeep726 replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
IDK about the '97 and onward, but on my buddy's '96 XJ, removing the cat and associated O2 sensor didn't make a bit of difference in how it ran, nor did it throw a CEL. Granted, it has 285k miles on it so it may or may not be running optimally anyway haha. -

onlyinajeep726 replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Being in NC, you're required to have a cat, but with that said, it's merely a visual check that it's there at inspection time. No sniff test or other verification of it working. Sooooo, instead of cutting it out and patching that section with a piece of pipe, unbolt it from the downpipe and break up the comb, and blow it all out. Sounds like you have a blockage forming anyway because there should not be enough heat collecting in there to melt stuff under normal operating conditions. If you're still unsure how you want to resolve it, make a two hour drive to my home town, below Raleigh, and I'll do the work for you for the cost of the pipe and lunch. Seriously. I'd rather your MJ not burn to the ground. -

Garbage... Absolute garbage. I, when I was quite younger, bought a set of these from Craigslist... Installed them and instantly hated them. Light scatter was horrid and aim was junk. Took them off and resold them on CL. Not worth $90-100. Especially when you can get a good quality, GLASS housing like Rampage for about $75 on Amazon.
