  1. I think its safe to say that the OP does indeed have different ratios front vs. rear. Pop the covers and start countin'! Let us know what you find. In the meantime I'm gonna stop arguing theoretical stuff here since I've never actually witnessed this scenario in person and we don't even know if the guy is describing a phenomenon he's observing with the car in the air or driving, straight line or in a turn, gravel or pavement, etc.
  2. Had 3.07s in the front and 3.54s in the rear for a year or so and might have put her in 4wd a time or two... No. Would one axle turn slower? sure. But not backwards.
  3. Let's be clear about something: mismatched gear ratios would not, in any universe, cause one wheel to turn backwards in relation to the others. Your initial post: "skids along" implies you're observing this while driving. But your other post: Implies you're looking at it on a lift with the wheels off the ground... With an open diff you can't count on the left and right side wheels to be rotating at the same speeds. As mentioned, things like brake drag will influence what you see. Not recommending this, but I've personally used my hands to stop one wheel of an open diff hanging on a lift above my head at 40+mph. Does the truck drive in 4wd ok if you drive in a straight line on dry pavement? or does it buck and pop at you?
  4. Lol, don't take it too hard man. Not to be cheesy, but this is how you learn (ok, maybe it's the expensive way, but still). Props to you for having the adventurous spirit, don't give up.
  5. You're doing this with the wheels in the air aren't you?
  6. Ever get this done?
  7. Detonation during initial tune --> blown head gaskets and possible damage to pistons Blown head gaskets --> overheat Overheating to 300* -->pistons swell in bores and fall apart oops.
  8. I've been wondering this as well
  9. These newer manifolds are soooo much better than the old fbody or truck pieces. Unless you're going with some wild cam or something you won't really benefit from shorty headers over a nice LS3 or similar manifold. Long tubes are a different story however.
  10. And would not cast manifolds be infinitely more "rugged",leak-free, etc than a tubular header? It's not like you'll be hurting for power...
  11. Here's another MJ guy interested in an LS swap. Take a very close look at 5th gen Camaro exhaust manifolds. All signs point to them fitting but I have yet to see someone try them for our trucks. Good luck!
  12. Some TLC and upgrades are coming soon! Starts with finally having functional reverse lights (new switch in the trans). Now to get the LEDs tied in.
  13. So the new rings move around nice and free in their respective grooves (lands) in the pistons right? Keep a wary eye out for any hairline cracks in the pistons. Did you perform a leak-down test or at least a dry/wet compression test before tearing into it? One has to wonder why the rings failed... damage on install? or major detonation? Sorry you're having troubles, but hey you're gonna be a pro at it! :rotf:
  14. Man pay close attention to the top ring lands when you're in there... fingers crossed!
  15. Custom dial decal? I've wondered if this was possible too...
  16. Looking at the schematic for my '90 it looks like the oil pressure and coolant senders are directly hooked to the cluster.
  17. I've messed with a bunch of these leakers out in the field. As far as I can figure, the only route for boost (or vacuum) to get into the water jackets via the intake manifold is the bank-to-bank coolant passages that are sealed up with the intake gaskets (2 spots I believe)... any other manifold leaks will either suck oil (from the valley) into the chambers or pressurize the crankcase when you're under boost; not cooling system issues. This is assuming the intake isn't cracked of course. I'm willing to bet you were pushing boost into the water jackets through the already blown head gaskets; you just finished them off with that good tune and the hard dyno pulls it took to get there.
  18. It is preventable. It was a combination of excessive coolant pressure, (above 27psi) because I had an overflow tank that was completely sealed (aluminum tank with screw on cap). Me running 10psi of boost, and it was probably horribly weekend from the multiple times I tried to tune it prior! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk Um, this sounds like the result of a combustion leak... Wether there's 10psi or 20psi in the intake none of it should be making its way to the water jackets. I'll go with your idea that it was damaged during your initial tuning attempts.Interested to see what you find when the heads are off. On a 60 degree v6 like the 2.8, 3.1, and 3.4 there is, the intake manifold is part of the heads. I'll try and take a picture tonight, it's a goofy motor. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk Huh?

  20. I daily drove a 5sp for an hr+ commute for years. Not being bored with the car/truck was always worth the "hassle" of the occasional traffic jam to me. In your case, that T56 with double OD would permit you to run some crazy deep gears and still keep the revs low on the highway; a recipe for the perfect DD in my book!
  21. Getting rid of that T56. Every other LS-swapped XJ/MJ has a stupid slushbox... You obviously know how to drive a stick, so why get rid of the most unique feature of your truck? idk, to each is own.
