What should I do while the carpet is pulled up?

I finally got around to pulling up the carpet to check for rust. It looks pretty good. Now that I have the carpet out, I have two questions:

 

1) What else should I do while this is taken apart?

 

2) What should I do about sound dampening? I've seen concerns that Dynamat may trap moisture on the floor. What should I do?

Scuff it and seal it with some enamel or other tough and comparable product.

Spray some rust preventative, like cavity wax in those floor braces too and then you'd be find to put some sound deadening in if you wanted.

That is one clean floor! I’d check the seam sealer and identify any possible leaks. If it’s all good, do as recommended above. On my last build after I removed and re seam sealed the cab, I por 15d it then raptor lined it. It’s worked great so far. And I did end up using dynapad on the floor with excellent results. I just don’t recommend the mass backed carpet. For me, it started to crumble and our gas horribly after 3 months.

Do you have any tips on installing the Dynapad? Do you know how much I'll need? Are there areas that you didn't cover? I noticed that the original carpet padding didn't cover the entire floor.

 

Also, there were two plastic bags with white padding in them at the front of the cab. I'm not sure whether those actually came with it or if perhaps someone added it later on. Do I need to keep those or use additional carpet padding beyond the Dynapad?

When you say enamel, do you mean something like Rust-oleum clear enamel? I'd like to keep the original gold paint if I can. There's a very small amount of rust around a few bolts that I need to address, but I don't want to spray a bunch of colored paint and ruin the original finish. (Yeah, I won't see it, but I can't stand the thought of ruining that factory finish floor.)

 

I might just clean up that small bit of rust with a rotary tool and use a stencil to spray the rust converter only on those particular spots.

Here's one of those white pads I mentioned. I'm not sure whether these are original. It seems odd that they're in bags.

dynapad type products work great on large echo-y sheetmetal like door panels and roofs, less so on small expanses that can't really reverberate.  personally I'd skip it on the floors and stick with protecting the steel down the road with the aforementioned products.

I plan to keep the original carpet. It's in pretty good condition. What would you recommend for the padding? It seemed like the original carpet padding didn't cover the whole floor, but I'm not sure which parts weren't covered. It came out in small pieces. And what about that white padding in the bags? Are those original?

I'm concerned about the sound dampening material causing moisture issues. Would it be a good idea to just add some to the transmission hump, the rear wall, and the doors?

 

For the rest, maybe I should just throw that white insulation back where I found it and replace the original carpet padding.

You could use a clear enamel if you wanted. And if you didn't want to brush it on and have that brushed look you could grab a cheap harbor freight spray gun and reduce the enamel and spray it on for a smooth look.

I bought some closed cell foam for the last truck I refurbed.  I wanted something there, but not something that would retain moisture (though the carpet traps it anyways, so does it really matter?).  it went down ok.  not yet sure what I'll be doing with this new truck.

For the sake of posterity and documentation, what's printed on that yellow label on the tunnel? Or is that just a business card lol?

The passenger side has a hole in it. Is that supposed to be there? What should I do with it? The driver side has the same circle, but no hole.

It goes all the way up the firewall. The dash needs to be pulled to get it out with out cutting it in half.

Thanks. I guess that won't be coming out any time soon. I decided to install Dynapad Xtreme and Dynamat. Maybe I should just put the Dynapad as far up underneath that firewall mat as I can reach without removing it?

I would fill the hole with a dab of seam sealer when I got to that step.   I see a bit of rust that needs to be addressed.

On my MJ I used dynaliner on the firewall since it has an adhesive backing. Dynapad is super nice stuff to work with though. It can be a tight fit near the center co sole to dash area but basically from rocker to rocker and back wall to lower firewall are prime spots for dynapad. Also worth adding some rtv or seam sealer around your floor plugs.

Yeah, those are just drain holes with plugs in them and seam sealer. Looks like they may have used two different plugs from the factory? But still, oem.

Yeah, you have to remove the dash to get that out. I would at least try to lift it up as much as you possibly can and visually inspect under it. There's been quite a few trucks on here recently that have had rust under it and under the seam sealer under it going up to the wiper cowl, including my own.

What do you do with the POR15? Does it work as a cleaner? Do you just use it with a rag to clean the rust off?
