Ollie's 1989 Comanche

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the info Ollie, going to start collecting parts so it's not such a shock all at once.

When I got my truck repainted the first time 20 years ago I was going to  the put pioneer stripes back on but liked the look without them. When I got it repainted again 10 years ago I still felt the same, mine is grey and the stripes are just darker grey, I really like the contrast of your pioneer stripes, looks great.

I am having a time with the fuel injectors............looking for some some help and suggestions

When I got my Comanche the previous owner had replaced all the injectors as 3 of the original were leaking. He told me  he had purchased some cheap China knock offs on E Bay. The original were trashed.

I replaced the them with some from CS Performance, Cloquet, MN, that I found on E Bay. They were rebuilt by them, a matched set and guaranteed for life. I got a set by year and engine size. They were orange and the engine ran great. I really didn't check any numbers on them. After less than 100 miles two of them failed. I sent the complete set back and they replaced them. The replacements were black but they are numbered 280155703 that the 89 4.0 calls for. They are not worth a flip. The engine is running real rich and blowing alot of soot. The tail pipe is really black and sooty. My mechanic is totally convinced the issue is the injectors.

I have  read all the posts I can find here and seems as if the Volvo injectors are recommend the most. Part # 62682/0280155746.

My questions are....1. Should I change to the Volvo injectors?   2. What is a good vendor for these? I am sure beginning to think that CS Performance is junk.

I am happy with the rebuilt 4 hole injectors I bought from K Suspension. I have heard he takes care of problems but also tries to make sure the injectors match well before shipping them out to the customer.

Updates to report.....

My new wheels and tires arrived. I went back to stock, 215X75RX15 tires and 7 inch wheels. Glad to see the 235X75RX15's and the 8 " wide wheels go........

My speedometer is reading right on, steering better, shifting better and riding better. Found out alot looking for wheels; Covid 15 is creating a shortage of aftermarket wheels. Most are made in California and everything is shut down. I was looking at US Wheels but most were out of stock. I am happy with the Black Rock.

I am still working on the injectors. I have talked to CS Performance Fuel Injection and they are going to fix me up with some 746's. My plan is to put in some cheap China 746 knockoffs and send them this set of 703's for replacement. Thanks to all who replied, Cruiser 54 I have done alot on your list too.

Today I started on scrubbing the carpet.......I am impressed how good it came out on the passenger side. Moving to the drivers side tomorrow.

I don't know why the dash pad came out maroon but it is a light gray

The drivers door panel is the worst. I am not the fellar that screwed it on. If I had grey button snaps it would look alot better.

The floor mats hide alot of sins.

Thanks to JMO413 for his  post about about the relay cover snaps. I went to the Jeep place this morning and here is the result.

Next project are the interior lights. I was planning on a Pull-A-Part trip for Volkswagon lights until I saw the Euramtec Lights. Those are really sharp and I plan on going that route.

Had a friend call me and asked if I wanted a tonneau top. Told me it is a fiberglass one off a Ford Ranger and its supposed to be good. We are going to go to his son's house next week and check it out. The haul it outa the yard price is just right for me !!!!!!!!!!!      My kinda friends    :nutherround:

My new 746 injectors arrived and what a difference they make. My buddy Pete has said all along that the idling issues were the injectors !! He was proven correct. I really don't see any performance change but the idle is right on now. With the AC on before the idle was a bit rough and it searched a bit. Now you can stand a dime on edge on the hood !!!!

Went and picked up my fiberglass tonneau cover.

That project is going to wait a bit. I am missing some of the hardware but he may have it. We went to my buddies son's house to pick it up and it was outside his garage. He is going to check and see if he has any more pieces. There has to be something that goes on the tailgate for the latch.

I been lucky on this build.......if you call this Chinese Pandemic lucky. Me and the wife are normally on the road all summer touring America in our old junk cars. Staying home all summer has given me the funds to work full speed ahead on the Comanche. As I said before the Comanche is going to be my daily driver. My 1989 Ford F150 was in need some TLC. By selling my 1966 AMC American convertible and the F150, I had the money to get the Comanche and get it up my specifications. Now all my junk cars are AMC.

Looks as if our car show season is going to kick off now. We are heading to Knoxville, TN to the NSRA Show the first weekend in Oct. Going to do The Ark after the show. Springfield NSRA and a big AMC Show in Florida to finish up Oct and kick off Nov. Glad that is all starting up again.

My next major plan  for the Comanche is to work on the box. Spray bed-liner, paint and install the top.

If anyone has a similar tonneau cover I would appreciate a couple of pictures of the latching system. I will most probably have to fabricate something.

I have a lid for my f350 and it just has a rod like a topper goes to each side. Seems rather simple enough to recreate. I like my lid even more so as it was free. If you want a pic still I could get out and get you one by this weekend.

Yes..we both got a deal on our tops, free is hard to beat. Some pics would be great, no big rush. Its going to be a Dec, Jan project.

I have been searching the internet about my box cover. I see how the locking system works and the missing parts are out there. Thats not going to be a problem. After a couple of phone calls I see that I will be spraying the bed liner myself..........

My interior lights arrived.....

Got the interior lights working...........:bananagun:

On the way home from the NSRA Springfield, MO show we stopped by my friends house and he gave me a Comanche horn button.

This is what I have to work with........

The gray button is mine, and Ricky gave me the maroon  one. I need to remove the plastic bolt ring.

You can see that the maroon one is all broken where it attaches to the steering wheel.

I plan on drilling out the attaching studs and remove the bolt ring.

I can epoxy glue it all back together.

This is the good button out of my Comanche

Thanks for taking the time to post the pics for me. I see that hardware online, now I know what I am looking for.

Now that I have the top and got better measurements it sure looks as if it maybe a bit to wide. Not giving up yet. I might have to do some modifications.

I need to get the bed liner sprayed so I can get the top on the truck without scratching the paint.
