I was just wondering what was better all around in your guys mind! Auto or manual transmissions off road, on road, city, ect.. So say your choice and reason! My choice would be auto as I have been in small offload situations where auto would of been nice or if I had 3 feet  so let's hear it guys!

On road city and traffic? Auto. Offroad and country roads? manual.  So much more control for precise movement off road with a manual, but damn it is it annoying with stop and go traffic, haha.

Please Mother. I'd rather do it myself. Automatics are nice and I wouldn't reject a otherwise desirable car because of the trans. But I prefer the manual.

Auto my preference.  I use either tranny for identical situations and have not experienced any significant  inconvenience to get the job done.  But, in town or the highway its auto all the way based on convenience/less effort.

I am a manual fan even though my MJ is auto. Even my Liberty was a 6speed stick. A good tranny like a T18 or NP435 adds a ton of off road ability by lowering your crawl ratio while keeping street able axle gearing.

Auto's are for old ladies. ;)

ticks me off that you cannot get so many vehicles with manuals anymore. Including 1/2 ton trucks.

how much sweeter would a raptor be with a six speed?

I converted my mj to a 5 speed.

I also read i think in jp that an auto is more likely to leave you stranded if a failure than a manual.

Prefer Manual On and Offroad (three feet not needed when you have throttle lever or at least not as much)

But My old Knee's can't take the day to day Manual so My truck Was Converted to Auto From Manual...

Manuals for me.

I've three autos and have not liked driving any of them.  We got them for towing a travel trailer.

I've owned both. I prefer standards because you're more connected with the vehicle and have greater control. Autos are good though for around town, and when you have a Comanche with no cup holders LOL

Also in my experience with manuals, I'm always thinking sometime the clutch is going to go out....one day

Happened to me once, but if you have a good starter and a fully charged battery, you can drive without the clutch, even from a stop.

You lost your master or slave, if your clutch was gone you wouldn't be going anywhere. It would smell burnt too.

I guess I'm the opposite, I prefer auto for offroad and stick for the street.

I like being able to creep with an auto offroad where with a stick you would be slipping your clutch. On the street I like the stick for being a hooligan.

no that's not what I meant! I mean no matter what every time you use your clutch it is slowly wearing down!

I'm 'okay' with autos but I prefer stick for everything, 5spd in my Chief, 4spd in my Base.

Going to swap a 5spd into my civic once I've got time and figured out what I'm doing as far as an engine build goes.

Built autos are pretty awesome though, my buddy had a 88 Monte SS with a 350 and a built trans, that thing would upshift so damn hard.

Nothing like having the rear end kick out when it slams into 2nd gear wide open on dry pavement

I have always preferred standard. While I admit that an automatic is easier in extended, heavy stop-and-go traffic, overall for street and light trail use I would rather have a 5-speed. For serious rock crawling, though, the automatic is IMHO far superior.

I learned to drive on a 1953 Studebaker with a Borg Warner automatic.  My second car was a 1959 Rambler with a 3 on the tree.  Since that Rambler, I have always had at least one car with a manual transmission.  For many years, I drove a manual trans car from Orange County to West Los Angeles on the Santa Ana and Santa Monica freeways every day.  You do not get worse traffic than that anywhere.  So I am well programed with a manual transmission.  My Comanche has an Asin Warner automatic, a direct decedent from the automatic in my old 53 Stude.  For the truck, I prefer the automatic transmission.  But that is a function of how I use the truck.

I hope the day never comes that manual transmissions become obsolete.  I own a Comanche in part because new trucks seem to not offer manual transmissions anymore.  As long as I have a choice, I will never own any vehicle with an auto.

I have both...but prefer manual......I always feel sorry for my passengers when i have been driving the MJ or my YJ for a while and then jump into one of the automatic XJ's.......that first time as I approach a stoplight and put my foot on the "clutch".......and the passenger goes into the windshield.....

I recall that several years ago CA was proposing increased mileage and emission standards for new vehicles.  The auto industry responded to CA with the statement that the only way they (auto industry) could meet the proposed standards was to produce and sell more vehicles with manual transmissions.

I don't see a problem with that!
