restoring rear bumper

Recommended Posts

I'm about to drop my truck off to get painted and I desperately want a pristine factory rear bumper. Mine is pretty bent and mangled. I've been searching for a replacement and researching options since Jan. One time I sat in a parking lot waiting for the owner of a Comanche to come back. It was beat and missing lots of parts, but, the bumper was great. He got angry that I even suggested he sell his bumper. I'm frustrated. While mine is beat there is very little rust and I have all the trim. I'm now considering just spending the money to get it professionally restored. Thought I would throw out there a, what did you do? Maybe someone out there has a really nice bumper they would part with because they know how much I would appreciated it? What say you?

Having someone professionally restore a bumper is going to cost way more than being patient and eventually finding a great one to purchase. Get a couple quotes from the repair shops and decide if the cost is worth it to you.

I bought a new FEY bumper about a year ago and it was a identical match to the stock bumper. I even used the original mounting brackets even though I bought the mounting kit. The OEM bumper was just basic black.

This is what I found

Shop around and you will likely find a better deal, I think I paid just over $100.

I'm picky and the FEY bumper is nowhere close to the stock bumper. Sure it fits but it does not look the same.

I plan on restoring my OEM bumper if I don't find a better condition one. Cost be damned it can be fixed LOL. It's just metal, hit it until it's as close to straight as possible. A little body filler and blocking and it's ready for paint ;-)  Last time I checked the body shop in town I've dealt with charged about $70/hr, if you just had them make it straight and you did the painting, I would think it wouldn't be more than a couple hours labor. If you wanted them to completely restore it then yeah at least double for filling, sanding, painting, etc.

In my opinion the fey bumpers look nothing like the original. But I have considered bolting one on while I wait for a better option. Have also considered using a jack to straighten it enough where it doesn't rub the paint. Then do a nice paint job. It would be an homage to what a challenge it is to get a nice one. I imagine people confused by a nicely restored truck with a dented up bumper. Lol.

Divine Droppings,  $500?

I picked one up this summer, admittedly not mint, but with only a couple dents, good plastics, minimal rust, for all of $35. I guess some yards know what they've got better than others...

I picked up one today at a local yard for $20. It does need a little work, but not too much.Coincidentally the truck I pulled it from had a "tag"

I have three of those, two black and one chrome. They are a somewhat ugly but utiliarian replacement and about the cheapest thing you can find, but they are not even close to matching the OEM bumper.

I was in the same situation as you are.  Northern Indiana is not kind to Comanche bumpers so finding them in junkyards can be difficult.  I found a fey in fair condition and mounted it.  Then I patently waited for a factory bumper.  Patience paid off. I have two of them now.  One to use and the other to replace my bumper if someone rear ends me.  My link below shows a mounted fey.  Fey is a little heavier than factory but it doesn't look as nice but only those familiar with a Comanche would know it is not factory.  Personally, I don't mind the appearance.

I do not like the look of the factory bumper. Fey would have been OK but...$250 with brackets and this would not have solved my receiver hitch needs.

Completely utilitarian, and you won't' find me in the herd of sheeple......so.......and god help the poor sap that tags my rear at a stop light... :P
