Best Factory Replacement Tires

Recommended Posts

Do you guys have any tire/brand preference for stock size tires I'm looking to replace mine with 225/75/15's since mine are worn, out of round, old and I'm almost convinced they're causing my death wobble, I've read and heard to stay away from Good Year Wranglers are there any brands that are preferred? my truck is stock height and suspension 2WD and is used as a daily driver, thanks.

If they are as bad as you say they probably cause some shimmy and shake but not legitimate DW. You question is hard to answer without more info....were are you located....in warmer climate? or some place were snow is a factor?

Any good quality all season or all terrain would be a replacement.....Right now I have:

1 Set P235/75/R15 Good Year wranglers (just what you requested) on my daughters Xj....nice tire, good traction good tread, quite on the road, carry a load and handles well.

1 Set P235/75/r15 Cooper all season on my wife's XJ ...nice tire, good traction good tread quite on the road carry a load and handles well....has a softer compound so it seems to hook up on the ice a bit better than the Good years

2 sets of BFG All Terrain, 1-275/75/R15 on my 2 door XJ Lorado and one set of 31's on the MJ.....these tires I like in all conditions but gumbo....IMHO the tread is too close together and gets gummed up to quick

1 set of 31x10.5x15 Yokahma Geolanders on my son's 2 door XJS...these are a good aggressive tread in snow and mud....heavy wall and hard tread (I ran one at 10 psi for a while ....unknowingly....and the tire barely looked low) The only complaint(s) i have with these are the hard compound is brutal on icy or slick surfaces....like trying to walk across a hockey rink in dress shoes....and unusually  loud for the tread pattern (they remind me of my old school ground hawgs the way they howl on the hi-way).

1 set of Pro-comp 33x12x15 All Terrain on my YJ.....I like these tires the thread is like a street tread on steroids....Aggressive in the snow and ice....good on the slippery surfaces and amazingly quite for the lug size ( and on this one you are running topless most of the time so you can really hear it).

Don't know if this helps but just a cross section

AND MY LAST PIECE OF  ADVISE.....WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE SPEND THE COUPLE OF EXTRA $$ AND GET THEM ALL BALANCED

You're right sorry to have been so vague, I live in Los Angeles and won't be doing any off roading with them or driving through snow and don't care too much for a "luxury car ride" I can get a really good deal on Wrangler SR/A's which was my tire of choice but other jeep forums have mentioned many times they don't go very well with some jeeps (personally I wasn't convinced to blame the tire),,, by the way thank you for your response it is very thorough.

When i was running Stock sized tires I had Uniroyal Liberator A/T tires (225/75R15). I never had any issues with them and they are currently on my dad's MJ.  They had good traction and a good ride for cheap Walmart tires.  I have General Grabber AT2 tires on my MJ at the moment (31x10.5R15), They are similar to the BFG A/T.

I have heard good thing about the Cooper tires.

My opinion for Truck and SUV tires are get at least A/T if you plan to use it for any ward work... but that's just me.

The original Wrangler Radials such as what came on the early XJs and the MJs has been discontinued in 225/75R15 but it is still available in 235/75R15. Wal-Mart sells them for under $100 per tire. I just put a set on my XJ and I'm more than happy with them. I don't know what you've heard or read about Wranglers, but I'll keep buying them as long as Goodyear keeps making them.

I've got a set of Mastercraft Courser AT2's.  Good value, made in the US, really good in the snow and wet roads.  Seem to be wearing well.

Had wanted to get Cooper Discoverer AT3's but cheaped out.  No regrets

That's what I'm running now......31s

$650 for the set and that was a bargain.

I had Silent Armors, best tires I ever owned, but the 31s would have been over $1K.

Also have General Grabber at2's. They're a decent tire and not expensive, but they are winter tires. They didn't wear down when I ran them this summer, but it wasn't so hot this year. Don't know what they'd be like in real heat. But they're great in snow.

I run the LT235/70/16 Silent Armors on our Escape and am very pleased with them- quiet on the highway, great winter traction, not wearing down unusually fast in the summer. I chose the LT version to have a little stiffer sidewall. The only drawback is the cost at $800+ for a set with mount/balance/lifetime road hazard.

Saskatoon summer=Los Angeles winter. LoL

You'd be surprised. It's not uncommon to hit 100ºF in the summer. It's just that last summer was unusually cold and wet where I was (actually in Manitoba, but typically the climate is identical).

I am on my second set of Kumho SR 21 tires (first set was stolen).  Relatively inexpensive and long tread life.  $68/ea at Discount Tire:

If the Comanche was my daily driver for 25K miles/year, I would buy Michelin Tires for the long term.  But I only use the truck 3 or 4K/year.

The Kumho tires work fine for me at a decent price.

Want to trade weather? I've just gone through three consecutive nights of sub-zero "global warming." It didn't get out of the teens today.

Biggest problem about California, though, is the (anti-)gun laws. I couldn't live there.
