xj_dummy Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 If you had a bench seat and went to bucket or bucket to bench, what do you perfer? I found an 86 cherokee with blue buckets, center console, and tilt at the junk yard, and I am thinking of going after it. Which is more commfortable on long trips? Comments?
89eliminator Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 i like my buckets because of the comfort and having a full center console.
BLHTAZ Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I think the buckets are much more comfortable as well. I always felt like I was leaning in to the door when driving with the bench.
Silver88 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Don't do it. Send all that junk to me and let me save you from the horror! Just kidding, Go for it.
Pete M Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I love my buckets, but I also know some guys that hated them and preferred the bench. Although, I didn't really like it when the vinyl in my first set of buckets decided to disintegrate on me. The cloth ones have held up great. Do those XJ seats have a curved or straight slider track? Are they vinyl or cloth? How much cash are they asking? I'd probably go for it, depending.
aemsee Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I definitely prefer buckets, But I'm kinda stuck with bench for now cause of having two kids. Soon they will be too old to both ride with me and then I can switch.
JeepcoMJ Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 buckets. they won't have the tilt option unless they're from a 2dr though. not a big deal as you can still access behind the seats from between them.
phenryiv1 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 For those who made the swap and have an auto trans, what do you do with the area where the XJ shifter would be?
shelbyluvv Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Most MJs are floor shift autos. I have seen a lot less column shifted trucks. You could always change out the column and shifter.
HOrnbrod Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Buckets for sure, especially the ones with the big side bolsters from a 2-door XJ. Below is what I did to cover the shifter hole since I have a column shift. It's a stainless soap dish. Good place to store cigarettes. :D
summerinmaine Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Buckets for sure, especially the ones with the big side bolsters from a 2-door XJ. Ditto! I just swapped in a set of XJ seats, cause I liked the cloth much better than my (somewhat decrepit) vinyl seats, and I prefer as much bolster as I can get. I have Recaros in my 2002Tii, and with the large thigh and side bolsters, you don't move around at all. Unless I had to carry three people routinely, I wouldn't have a bench if you paid me.
flint54 Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Bench seats are better for some things, but for driving I really prefer buckets.
Car RamRod Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 I fit in a front seat from a late 90s dakota pickup. It's pretty much 2 buckets with a little seat in the middle that folds down into a console. Made a HUGE difference over my stock, worn to hell bench.
Shane Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 I have buckets in my 99 xj and bench in my 89 mj. Honestly I prefer the buckets because I fell more comfortable and stable in them. On the other side if you have a young child like I do, then you probally will want to opt for the bench in the mj. That is about all a bench seat is good for in a mj, because even with the car seat it is alittle tight. I guess it depends on what you need it for. For you get buckets. For you and a child go for the bench Shane
summerinmaine Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Bench seats are better for some things Paradise by the dashboard light? :brows:
88manche4x4 Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I'm puttin honda prelude bucket seats in mine.
xj_dummy Posted January 7, 2009 Author Posted January 7, 2009 Anyone tall like me have problem with buckets? Like 6' plus? If I go buckets, then Ill have to get rid of my cup holder that I made for the bench..... Hmmmmmmmmm.
mvusse Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I'm 6'5" and have buckets. Seat all the way back is not too bad. With a bench I'd be afraid he roof might get in the way.
