When I removed mine on my rear dana 44 on my XJ it was real tight also. I took a rachet strap and wrapped it around the carrier and hooked the other end to my bumper and tightened it real tight and then hit the housing where the case spreader would go with a hand sledge alternating left and right and it came out slowly. Had to keep tightening the strap as it moved. Hope this helps. :hmm:

On my lil 88 i changed the hub bearings and diagnosed why my pass side wheel was wacky. my stock tie rod is bent from running over stuff. Good thing i have a backup skyjacker tie rod with endlinks ready to go. I also spent 6 hours trying to diagnose why it won't get fuel pressure. Still don't know, but have more leads.....

Don't hit the carrier, just the axle housing. wrap the strap around the carrier. No damage happened when I did this. Wish I took pictures.

Good news... put mine back together, wooo :clapping: !

New airtools were great!!! (early x-mas present from the wife jamminz.gif :clapping: )

Replaced all the bushings in the control arms (ok I give up, I took them to a mechanic with a press to get 6 of the 8 out)

Swapped out the stock springs for V8 springs to balance the MT rear springs and level it out a bit

Replaced those damn female torx bolts on the upper control arms with stainless steel hex heads.. huzzah!

Replaced brake caliper bolts with stainless steel bolts (one stock bolt was broken and sheared off)

Got all replacement u-joints and steering damper

Bad news...

something wrong in the front driveshaft (likely why it started making noise and vibrating). I'm not sure on the terminology, but it's the piece between the double u-joints on the front-axle side. After some quick googling, I think it's the "centering ball", but I'll have to keep looking (any ideas on replacement parts? DIY or shop only repair?). So front driveshaft is out, RWD only for the time being.

failed to replace axle u-joints, I was going to put them on my spare axle shafts and just swap them over but I think I want to do the hubs at the same time. Looking around for a good price.

failed to replace steering damper. With axle dropped, the trackbar was in the way of removing the bolt. Just wanted to get it back in driving condition so I can fix that part later.

On the maiden voyage, heard a chin-churrrrr-ching-ching-chhurrrr sort of noise. One of the gas tank straps broke and was falling on the rear driveshaft :fs2: Must have broken off from the impact hammering on those suspension bolts. :fs1: I can never :wall: never :wall: never :wall: fix something on this truck without something else breaking!! :wall: :wall: :wall:

Next up:

figure out parts to order to fix front driveshaft

fix front driveshaft

find out I can't fix front driveshaft

get new tools to fix front driveshaft :brows:

replace front hubs and u-joints

replace all rear bumper bolts with stainless (gotta be ready to use those rear recovery hook for winter ya know)

align rear pinion angle and replace rear ujoints

fix rusty floors :help:

Took the drums off today, looking for a mystery clunking.

I get a half dozen clunking knocks usually starting out in first. I'm thinking maybe axle bearing.

Right rear axle leaking a bit.

Left rear axle leaking a bit more.

Moved the axle left and right, a little play, I'm guessing play in the pinion gear.

In and out movement is a bit, didn't seem bad. No grinding, usual noises turning the axle.

The diff has 300,000 miles on it.

Replaced the front u joint a few months ago, rear u joint seems good.

The mystery noise continues.......

if the axle shaft moves left and right (in and out), it has nothing to do with the pinion gear. you, sir, have a bad wheel bearing.

...and your proportioning valve prop rod should be vertical...

Allow me to clarify, instead moving left and right, I meant turning the axle left and right theres a bit of play in changing direction.

From what I hear a little play is OK.

I'll gotta check what's up with the proportioning valve prop rod. Far as I know it's been like that since I bought the Comanche in 1990.

Thanks for the input.

I have done little to nothing to the MJ lately, but I need to, because I'm starting to get an itch to get back into air cooled VW's, and I just can't do that right now, so I guess Id better get busy, and finish my rear shackles, my front end alignment, finish my trailer hitch build, start my bodywork so I can paint the rockers, polish the rest of the truck so I can add the stripe tape I want to put on to cover the holes left over from the wagoneer trim parts that were removed, and find some white Herculiner to do the bed next year. And I have that wagoneer parts vehicle I need to figure out what I'm going to do with, and a spare 2.5 at my parents house in michigan that needs to come back to North carolina so I can start a rebuild on it to have it in case anything happens to my current one---- Knock on wood!

Got the driver's side floor replaced, got the new clutch master cylinder in and bled, got the interior back in it and its driveable again! Granted, this didn't all occur today, but still, my Comanche will be back on the road soon! jamminz.gif

I installed my newly modified rear spring shackels to raise the rear to match the front with the 4x4 spring and extra isolator. I had a buddy of mine give me a pair of stock Chevy shackles (which are the same size as stock MJ shackles but heavier made) and welded metal on them to make them longer and drilled them to get me between 1 and 1 1/2 inches of rear lift. I then installed the last piece of my new autozone steering ends, and found that my stabilizers axles side bushing was wallowed out.... I didnt want to buy a new one, as this one seems to work fine pushing in and out, so I sleeved the bushing with a metal sleeve like a shock might have and reinstalled it. Then I put the whole thing on the alignment rack so I could install my new OEM caster shims of which I bought 8, thinking that would be more than enough. So all set up on the rack, installed shims, and it only helps the caster a tiny bit. Initial meausrement was just over 4 degrees, the shims didnt even get it to 5, so I cut a couple strips of the metal I used for the shackels, and hammered them in there, and got it to just over 6 degrees, it looks like I moved the lower control arms forward almost 1/2 ". I'm not sure theres enough adjustment there to get me to the factory spec of 7.5 degrees, but from what Ive read on here with lifted truck, 6 should be just fine. My steering wheel is perfectly centered, and it drove fine. Went through an area that usually gives me DW, and it didnt happen today!!! I had my camera with me today, but didnt get around to taking any pics. As it was I worked on it 4 hours and didnt even realize I was there that long! Ill try to get pics tommorow, as I really need to update my build thread too. So keep an eye out for updates to project "Comanche Limited"!

finally got most parts back together on front axles expect the caliper parts since need to replace the pads and brake lines

last thing that i did today was painted my differential cover color silver spray can since thats all paint can i have right now to protect the cover from winter that come up. ill remove it then recoat the cover with primer then blue paint asap though and bolt it up and let ultra black rtv cure overnight.

hopefgully tomorrow will be finally no more leak from front axle thats i been work on it forever! :peek:

yea its bad paint job since that spray can is really old and only for plastic which won't seat on metal well :fool:
