Bet the owner is an interesting fella. The people that drive heavily rusted, stickered trucks usually are.

Cluster swap from '96 to '91
Minuit replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a 96 full cluster in my 91. It will make things extremely easy if you ever want to use the UK market 125mph speedometer. -
Hayden 678 is a very nice piece. I have mine plumbed in after the radiator.
-
Yeah. The locks will work fine without power. Remove the actuators from the doors if you want them to work a little more smoothly manually.

The only "red" cluster is the 1988-1990 (cable speedo.) and 1991-1996 (electronic speedo.) full cluster. All other clusters have the "blue" face, including: - All 1984-1986 clusters - 1987 full clusters, which are unique - All 1987-1990 and 1991-1996 base clusters - 1987-1990 "3/4" clusters with all gauges except the tachometer - 1991-1996 "certified calibration" police clusters

1987 shift indicator bezel cross reference years

The later ones (95,96 I think) have a different font if it matters to you. -
I alternated between my MJ and a very much in-disrepair '96 Thunderbird for my broke college years and did just fine. The MJ for moving my stuff and the T-bird, in less disrepair these days, for the 4 hours a week home and back. I can count on one hand the number of times I moved other people's stuff. Only my friends even knew what I drove because I walked everywhere. If I didn't feel like helping, I just told 'em no. Your results may vary. What schools are you looking at?

I'm also pretty sure that the stud is part of the fender, either pressed or tacked into it from the other side. Sadly, finding a fender in that color is going to be next to impossible. I'd use the threaded insert tool. They're useful for all kinds of things too, so you'll find something else to use it for.

E-Brake Pedal Won't Hold (Brake Works Though)
Minuit replied to ktmall07's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The factory parking brake mechanisms suffer from a design flaw (my guess is improperly hardened ratchet teeth) that basically means EVERY MJ parking brake mechanism will do this eventually. This was the subject of a recall for 1986 models, but it's present in all of them. You can refinish the teeth and add stronger springs, but my guess is that it's probably going to happen again. I'll be converting my 89 to a hand parking brake for exactly this reason. No way I can trust them again after seeing pictures of some of the worn teeth. -

... drill a hole on the other side of the handle so the blind hole ain't a blind hole no more. Hate those stupid things. -
Hell, just the tailgate, tail lights, and bumper are worth the $600 as long as the bottom hasn't rusted out of the bumper and tailgate.

Battery problems for about the 3rd
Minuit replied to Muncher's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The group 58 battery that's specified for these trucks have about 35 amp hours of capacity on average before the battery is fully discharged to 10.5 volts. A 0.2A draw would kill such a battery in a week, which is completely unacceptable. My '89, although most of the interior electronics are gone right now, starts after months of sitting. Also - alternative way to check for a parasitic draw if the circuit you're testing has a fuse with exposed test points at the top: put your meter in DC volts mode on its lowest scale, and probe across each fuse. Any fuse that reads a voltage has a parasitic draw. This doesn't tell you how big the draw is, but it will quickly tell you where it is. When doing this on the interior fuse box, make sure to do something to push the door ajar switch in so the dome lights don't come on. -
5257145 for 1991-1992. Taking the new cylinder to a locksmith and having it re-coded from the keys it comes with to your old key is probably the best bet, if it's possible at all. Alternatively, you could see if you could get one through a locksmith. I doubt the dealership would be of any help, but @eaglescout526 might be able to prove me wrong.

Wiring up Fog Lamps w/ stock harness
Minuit replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The load side of the fog lamp relay is fed 12V through the AUX LAMPS fuse in the power distribution center. Circuit F39 in the electrical manual. Pages 5 and 30-31. -

How exactly does the frame attach to the bed rail? I'm wondering if there's enough room to sneak my under-the-rail bedliner behind the clamps. -
Wiring up Fog Lamps w/ stock harness
Minuit replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That connector is unobtainium and a notorious un-sealed, corrosion prone POS that's placed in about the worst possible location. Believe me, I've tried to find out what it is and if I could get pins and connector bodies. It shares similarities with some stuff I've seen in older British stuff, and knowing AMC that doesn't surprise me. If that connector ever gives anyone problems, my default recommendation is to hack it off and replace it with a Deutsch connector... or anything, you know, good. The front harness with fog lights was plug and play in my 91, but I'm thinking the front lighting harness wiring changed at some point between 91 and 96 to make them incompatible. I believe my harness was from either a 92 or 93 with factory fog lights - and like I said, plug and play once I added the switch inside the dash (the wiring inside the cab is already present), the bulb for the switch panel, a fuse in the engine bay fuse box (labeled AUX LAMPS), and switched out the front harness. -
Battery problems for about the 3rd
Minuit replied to Muncher's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It almost certainly wasn't the battery the first time, and it's still almost certainly not the battery. You need to find the draw the hard way - that is, put an ammeter on one of the battery terminals and disconnect things until the draw goes away. Like they said, it's probably the glove box light. That has to be properly adjusted for it to go off when the glove box is closed. If that's the case, the draw would go away when the "DOME" fuse is pulled. -
If either of the regulators are stiff at all to turn, you might want to take them out and clean the "snake" that runs the glass up and down to keep this from happening again.

My guess is it's just faded. Look between the panels and you can see the original color of the vinyl. But yes, that style of upholstery is very fragile, so the odds of finding a reasonably priced replacement are low unless you can find a NOS cover. The cloth version of those seats have very durable fabric. I'm sitting in one now as I type this.
