Nice truck and well bought! Welcome to the addiction. Just remember, JEEP is an acronym for Just Empty Every Pocket. Edit - your floors didn't look all that bad in comparison to my old 88 MJ.

Sorry to hear about your Comanche. I don't know how I'd handle having mine wrecked. For me it's tough to have it sidelined when I'm working on it, even though I know I'll have it back on the road again eventually. I hope you're able to work something out with the insurance gangsters, uhh, I mean insurance company.

Did you ever find a black one?

big66440 - I may have to go the JY route. I've looked at several websites (including Crown Automotive) and they are showing a different design for the PN that does not have the mounting flames on the ends or the hole. Don't want to buy an evaporator that doesn't fit and not be able to return it. There is a 91 XJ in the local JY that has the correct evaporator. If I can find a way to leak test it I may go pull it.

Have to agree with SVPete, that bed is immaculate. Did no one ever put even a cardboard box in it? If the truck is truly as described and looks as good the photos - jump on it! You can easily do a 4x4 conversion later if that's an issue.

Thanks, Don!

There was a 88MJ with bench seat in the Montgomery Pull-a-Part about 2weeks ago.

Looking for the OEM part number for the AC evaporator for a 91 MJ. Got mine out (finally) and found one spot with dye showing but several traces of dye in the housing. I'm hoping Crown has a replacement that has provision (a hole through the end plate and fins) for the thermostatic probe. Rock Auto's evaporator description says it does not have the hole.

That is a sho nuff bad azz MJ! Cannot believe he winds it so high. Kept watching for a big puff of smoke on the far end.

Does anyone have a recommendation on the pulley and bracket assembly to replace/delete the AC compressor. I'm thinking pretty strongly about replacing my whole AC system over the winter. But I want to be able drive the truck while I'n in the process of gathering up all the new stuff (compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier, expansion valve, hoses, etc.). I may go ahead and install the new evaporator when I pull the old one to be through with the interior work.

Engine thats been sitting for 10 years 4.0
Keyav8r replied to sinkrun's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
10 years in an unheated garage. Hundreds of heating-cooling cycles and condensation. I'd bet on a rebuild. -
Sport, 4 cylinder, manual, 2WD. Damage on left front but header, grill, hood, right front fender and right door are good. Tailgate fair, no deep rust, top has a few digs but fixable. Tail lights there but left one chipped, right one laying in bed with one socket hole damaged. Bed probably repairable but didn't check under the fender wells for rust. Bench seat in bad shape.

Never pulled an engine with mine but I've loaded large pumps, demo skids, industrial fans, etc. a good number of times. May actually use it to pull the MJ engine when (if) I retire.

Don - you got the MJ Encyclopedia loaded on your hard drive?
-
Hey! It is a Jeep. However this isn't horseshoes or hand grenades, so he does lose points on the presentation phase.

Good to hear you were able to walk away with some stitches. Be careful on that drive tomorrow. You're probably going to have a lot more soreness and stiffness to deal with. I'm at the point the belt goes on before I back out of the garage.
-
What length do you need? I've got a NOS cable I can measure to see if it will work for you.

Thanks, Cruiser! I've always said "when all else fails, read the instructions".

Pretty much what I thought, but just hoping someone had a trick up their sleeve.

I'm 75% sure my AC leak in my 91 MJ is at the evaporator (will be 100% sure before I proceed with the next drastic step). And, if I have to replace the evaporator I'll replace the heater coil while I've got things apart. My question Is whether it is possible to replace the evaporator and heater coils without completely removing the dash. Would there be enough room to change both coils by just hinging the dash back without disconnecting all the wiring and HVAC controls? Or, does it require more room to take the box apart? If I have to pull the dash I will (did it on my old 88), but would like to avoid it if possible.

Use a heavy c-clamp to flatten the dimple out and get at least 2" engagement on both ends. 3" would be better. With only 1" engagement you'll be flexing the joint every time you run over a pavement joint (or pot hole). If you can't get more engagement, weld it.

Production date tag - July 9, 1985?
