  1. Aww, it really isn't like that. Stick around, it is a great site. I didn't see anything insidious in your post, but written words can take on different meanings to different folks. Maybe Shelby had just gotten off of JU before he read your post :). I'm interested in what you found as a replacement carb for the 2.8. To me that is the biggest downfall to the little GM engine. Can't count how many of those things I rebuilt at the dealership.
  2. Fired her up for the first time in a month and took her to be inspected. Only 3 1/2 months overdue :D . Was gonna let her sleep 'til spring, but the mrs has been buggin me so she can drive it.
  3. what worked? coil, sensor or spraying it with carb cleaner? If it fired up when you sprayed it, it IS going to crap out again.
  4. \ x2 crank sensor spray the inspection hole with carb or brake cleaner it will blow the oil off of it and it will run again. Crank sensor in a 98 5.2 is a hall effect sensor. would work if submerged in oil. It is also possibly the worst sensor to get at I have ever seen.
  5. With all due respect CW, how does a typical household refridgerator "warm" up something? Every one that I have owned is only designed to remove energy from the inside objects and disperse that energy to the ambient air. While the alcohol and pressure will lower the freezing point inside the bottle or can, popping off that cap will cause an instant change in state from beautiful delicious amber liquid to a foamy solid that mocks you :rant: . The temps inside my freezer run about minus 8 degrees. It will freeze a room temp bottle of beer in under an hour. This has been proven many, many times. :ack:
  6. See if there is a local off road club you can tag along with sometime. Even just as a rider. There are a lot of little tricks and tip you can learn. You can also do research on line. Sounds funny to have to do research to go off road, but it aint the movies out there. There is a huge amount of energy stored in a vehicle that is stuck in the mud and being yanked on or winched.

  9. So, it can't be the L/R band 'cause you wouldn't have reverse either. And the ORC would give you the D range slip, but L would be OK. You said fluid level was Ok, but how did it look/ smell?
  10. Here is the diag page from the FSM: ANALYZING ROAD TEST Refer to the Clutch and Band Application chart and note which elements are in use in the various gear ranges. Note that the rear clutch is applied in all forward ranges (D, 2, 1) The transmission overrunning clutch is applied in first gear (D, 2 and 1 ranges) only. The rear band is applied in 1 and R range only. Note that the overdrive clutch is applied only in fourth gear and the overdrive direct clutch and overrunning clutch are applied in all ranges except fourth gear. For example: If slippage occurs in first gear in D and 2 range but not in 1 range, the transmission overrunning clutch is faulty. Similarly, if slippage occurs in any two forward gears, the rear clutch is slipping. Applying the same method of analysis, note that the front and rear clutches are applied simultaneously only in D range third and fourth gear. If the transmission slips in third gear, either the front clutch or the rear clutch is slipping. If the transmission slips in fourth gear but not in third gear, the overdrive clutch is slipping. By selecting another gear which does not use these clutches, the slipping unit can be determined. For example, if the transmission also slips in Reverse, the front clutch is slipping. If the transmission does not slip in Reverse, the rear clutch is slipping. If slippage occurs during the 3-4 shift or only in fourth gear, the overdrive clutch is slipping. Similarly, if the direct clutch were to fail, the transmission would lose both reverse gear and overrun braking in 2 position (manual second gear) If the transmission will not shift to fourth gear, the control switch, overdrive solenoid or related wiring may also be the problem cause. This process of elimination can be used to identify a slipping unit and check operation. Proper use of the Clutch and Band Application Chart is the key. Although road test analysis will help determine the slipping unit, the actual cause of a malfunction usually cannot be determined until hydraulic and air pressure tests are performed. Practically any condition can be caused by leaking hydraulic circuits or sticking valves. Unless a malfunction is obvious, such as no drive in D range first gear, do not disassemble the transmission. Perform the hydraulic and air pressure tests to help determine the probable cause.

    there are some other differences as well. the WJ water pump had an extra bolt holding it to the block. some other bolt placements are different. Threaded holes in the head for holding the coil rail. A/c mounting was high on pass side on ZJ, low on driver side for WJ........
  13. I had air shocks on my 71 Torino. With one fill for the pair. It did exactly what wildman said. And I wasn't really hauling stuff either :).

  15. 1970 Maverick. Hand-me-down from my three oldersisters. First car I owned (that was on the road). Blue with one white door, AM radio, broke fuel guage, mismatched tires, RUSTY, bad battery, bad water pump, bad ign switch, loose steering, Ford Ebola, one wiper arm and the list goes on. Went to take a LF tire off one day to switch with my Mustang. Loosened the nuts, jacked the tire off the ground, turned to get the lug wrench. Heard a loud crack. Turned back and the tire was back on the ground. Car just kinda broke in half near the firewall. This was in 1978. Went to a JY 20 years later, and there it was, sitting on top of two other cars. Might still be there for all I know.
  16. :agree: One really wierd thing that happened at work once that caused a similar condition. We bled out the clutch, but the reservoir cap was on. The rubber seal came off the cap and was down inside the reservoir. Didn't notice and filled the brake fluid on top of the seal. Made for a very funky pedal.

    Uninspected IS a moving violation in Mass. The only time it's not a moving violation is when a meter maid writes the ticket (when you're parked). As far as unregistered, that gets you towed here, and uninsured (usually goes along with unregistered) carries a possible JAIL sentence in Mass. Your laws there in the good commonwealth make NY look like Montana :D

  23. The only problem with that is if your PCV system (yeah I know CCV) isn't working, it can lead to more problems than just oil in the aircleaner. Do a search. There are write-ups for VC swap or repairing the cast ones. There is actually an old Jeep TSB on this issue.

    :agree: Pure BS. As someone who has been zapped countless time by our pasture fences, once while wading in a stream, it is a pulsed current that "kicks" you off of the wire. But an innovative story non the less.
  25. As a long time AMC tech, my take on some of AMC's downfall. (well, other than the screwing they got by GM with several dealings. reason I despise GM). They were by far the most innovative US car company at the time. They did a very good job of identifing niche markets, going for unconventional designs and looking toward the future. All wheel drive passenger cars, small SUV's, overdrive units for their trannys. The Pacer alone was a vehicle that incorporated many designs we see today. The aforemmentioned cab forward design, large greenhouse with lots of glass, wrap around interior components, no drip rails etc. Unfortunately manufacturing and materials were several years behind AMC design engineers. If AMC had the access to todays computer technology and todays advanced plastics I think they may have had a chance. It would have cleaned up alot of their designs as well. Add composite headlamps to the Pacer front end, a bit more curve to the sheet metal....hey, it's now Fords number one selling car, the Taurus. Some day I'll get a digital picture up of my 73 Hornet. Factory 304, disc brakes and 50k on the clock. Just wish it was a wagon.
