After-Market Temp Gauge Causing Misfire?
87MJTIM replied to Boltjd's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You wrote you have an 88 4.0. The factory temp gauge sensor is located at the back of the cylinder head, close to the fire wall. It only controls the dash gauge. The sensor for the computer is on the block, below the manifolds. If your sensor is on the t-stat housing, then a PO changed the housing to a later style. If the PO ran a wire from the original location to the t-stat housing, that does not change the computer functioning (unless a PO did a HO swap). If yours is still RENIX, the temp gauge wiring does not run through the computer. I "should not" effect engine firing. -
I purchase a set as part of the "group buy" several years ago. I am very pleased with them. I have loaded the bed with some camping gear and the bed doesn't even move. The old springs would start to sag with a little bit of weight (one of the leaves was broken). Same as Knucklehead, the back was lifted about 3.5". I put 1.75" pucks up front to even it out, but it still has that "70's hot rod look." The springs have not settled down, yet.

Thomas the Tank Engine! My daughter (and I) loved that show (with Ringo and George Carlin, not Alec Baldwin)

Speaking (or writing) as a CPA with knowledge of taxes, I can say that for some states (MD, for example) charge sales tax on "Shipping and Handling." The reasons for this is beyond the scope of my reply. If the charges are reported separately, i.e. "shipping" and "handling" then only "handling" is subject to sales tax. Different states may/will treat the two services as one or not tax them at all. Because of the recent Supreme Court ruling (Wayfair), most on-line retailers have to charge sales tax on all sales to customer in states that charge sales tax. Given the complexity of sales tax rules (48 states charge sales tax, within states local sales tax rules apply, and different items can be taxed at different rates, etc.), Rockauto may take a simple rule of charging sales tax on all applicable sales and items. Most states will not charge sales tax to a reseller of parts - auto repairs shops and other retailers. I don't know where you live and what the sales tax rules in your state may be. If you believe you are getting charged sales tax incorrectly, do you own research on your state's tax department website. Do your own research, don't just tell RA that they're wrong. Remember, they have high priced lawyers and accountants to help them. If your research proves you are correct, then write (do not email) to RA and present your argument and evidence. If that does not satisfy you, shop somewhere else. Getting a refund? Fat chance.

I got a train set when I was 5 (50 Yrs ago). I played with for years until my mid-teens. I never got rid of them. When I moved into my current house (92), I eventually got it out again. I had not used it much. I eventually "put it away," but have not given up on it. One day I will get it out again (grandchildren, maybe?). (BTW: I still love getting stopped at RR crossing for a train to pass.)

The fill plug is on the passenger's side up high. The drain plug is on the driver's side down low. A wise man once said to loosen the fill plug BEFORE draining in the gear oil. If you drain it first, and cannot remove the fill plug, you're screwed. (Yes, you can fill it from the top shift tower, but that is a lot of work to get to.)

Get any/all MJ specific parts: Brake load/height sensing valve Fuel sending unit Interior trim parts (B-pillars, rear cab panels, head liner panel) Bucket/bench brackets B-pillar vent covers Drip rails Passenger side (?) rear wheel flare Rear bumper (?) and end caps Rear cargo bed light (if present) Rear window, if sliding glass, 3 window. Others may add more. If you don't need/want the part, other may want them. You could recover some of you costs.

There was a guy at the York PA Jeep show several years ago with "possibly" one of those. It was a Comanche with an open bed, BUT all the body pieces were one solid unit. The bed was not separate from the cab. I asked the owner if it was a Cherokee that had lots of body work. He insisted it was original. I walked away thinking he was BS'n me. Maybe he was tellin' the truth. I remember it was a dark blue. Anyone else remember this?

The "blue" gauges have the needles that go from 7 O'clock to 5 O'clock; the "Red" gauges go from 9 to 5. My 87 has the Blue. I pulled an 86 full cluster that is also blue. However, I have seen 87 and 88's that had Red clusters - both full and idiot lights. I think the clusters were what ever Jeep had in the parts bin when you MJ/XJ rolled by on the assembly line.

89 4.0 Cam 180 Degrees Off?
87MJTIM replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
NO! There is one turn of the CAM for two turns of the crank. -
Do yours have the same transmissions? Stock manual 4.0: 3.07 Stock auto 4.0: 3.55

Simplest way (other than looking at a tag) is to jack up the rear end. Spin the tires two full turns and count the turns of the drive shaft. Divide that by 2. That is your ratio. ( I've always heard to do two turns of the tires to allow for the fractional turn. For example: ~6.2 is easier to eyeball then ~3.07) From the factory, a 4.0 5 spd will have 3.07 gears, 4.0 auto will have 3.55 gears

I grew up outside of DC and witnessed many violations by cars with diplomatic tags. I never witnessed a event like the one in London. A sad and tragic event. However, I do remember incidents involving diplomats that caused personal injury and, yes, even death of a US citizen. As I recall, the diplomats were "recalled home" after the event and did not return to America. This is the "generally accepted" actions of the various country's state departments. While I do not condone the actions, the US is no different than other countries.

REM stats, thoughts?
87MJTIM replied to Wounded_Fighter's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don't you think that was a little overkill? I mean, I can remove the air box without pulling the head. -
REM stats, thoughts?
87MJTIM replied to Wounded_Fighter's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you STFT jumps to 255 (or 0) and remains there, the ECU will default to Open Loop. The O2 sensor is detecting a lean condition. This is according to the Renix Fuel Injection manual pp. 2-3 where it describes "Pulse Width Modification (ALFACL)" and Open v. Closed Loop. Possible causes: low fuel pressure, clogged injector, or faulty O2 sensor. Additionally, you could have an intake leak allowing more air into the system. Possible manifold gasket or cracked exhaust manifold. -
I remember seeing similar pictures previously. But, the cars were only prototypes. They were NEVER produced for sales. Some of those pictured above may be one or more the prototypes. The original Mustang was built on the Falcon platform. There were Falcon versions of wagon and pick up. edit: pickup version Ranchero

Besides the fact that the housings are different sizes and the brake/turn signals are wired completely different, I don't see why they couldn't fit.
