For sanity sake, you got the right sending unit right? Renix?
All I can think of is the windings for the rheostat for the float is either damaged or has dirty contacts between the windings and float arm. I recently ran into that issue actually.
Its not though. 16 and 23 are the same externally. 18 is smaller than the 23/16 gallon tank and for the short beds only.
Were talking about AMC here. They did the same exact thing with the XJ by offering a 13 gallon tank and a 20 gallon and its the exact same externally.
Costs. Its cheaper to put a baffle in a tank with higher capacity than it is to make a new tank. 18 gallon tank had to be made specifically for the short box
Well it turns out I never took any pictures of the sending unit. But I swear it took the Bosch pump just fine with no modifications and looks like the one from my XJ. It also has the straight pipes like the XJ unit.
Yes it is. I have an NOS 86 unit in my 88. It fit just fine. If I can find pictures of it I’ll post it but I don’t remember too much since that was years ago.
Yeah thats an XJ one. I went through the same issue as I was running an 86 sending unit on my XJ. Theres a Bosch pump that will fit the early sending unit. I need to find the box that mine came in.
Pic of your original unit?
I’ve got quite a few work arounds and info.
23 and 18 gallon share the same sending unit. REGARDLESS! Of the engine.
16 is unique.
Pumps are pretty much the same between all.
Now 86 is the odd ball year and has a completely different sending unit and partially because it was easy to have one model. It wasn’t until the 4.0 where AMC made one sending unit across the board for the MJ.
2.5L Renix has an ISA. It’s different from the 4.0 and later HO set up with the IAC.
I love when everyone assumes the 2.5L shares the same set up for 4.0 Renix when they were never the same to begin with. Also grinds my gears too.
