  1. Well I know the only thing that really makes 86 the bastard years of both XJ and MJ is purely the TBI set up, from my experiences. I’m confident to say that you shouldn’t have a problem using the later booster in a pre 87 body. From what I know of using the dual booster is that it won’t clear the firewall lip and that the push rod mounts differently to the pedal. Otherwise my knowledge stops there. 86 guys feel free to tell me otherwise if I’m wrong. Oh and I guess what makes 84-86 odd is the firewall and the 4.0, hood prop, trans crossmember, horns, radiator support, front header and fenders. Really all the comes to mind.
  2. On my 84 XJ I didn’t notice any differences when I used a 92 booster other than the push rod hole being smaller than the Renix years. I drilled that out and it’s worked great ever since.
  3. From the pics of your front end, I’d do a full rebuild. Cut your losses of what the actual “solution” is and post the components that are possible to your issue and never look back. If this was my truck, I’d do a full front end rebuild, replace all that’s rusty, crusty and cracked with new and drive it. If the issue were to persist after, WE would all know, it’s no longer in the front suspension and you’d have peace of mind knowing that your front is practically all new. Hell! Go the extra mile, clean the axle up, paint it, replace the coil spring isolators if that has never been done. Those isolators help cushion the ride in the body and prevent road noise.
  4. I had my coil contacts at the ICM be dirty and result in no spark condition. If the coil has never been replaced or removed, the contacts are probably dirty and are now causing enough resistance to not spark. Hell we all should be checking our coil contacts if we’re still running original Renix ICMs.
  5. How is the engine eating up the distributor gears? This would have to mean you’d be getting very little oil pressure too until it just stops like how it did on you.
  6. It’s really the same as the GM TBI injectors so those can be snagged stupid easy.
  7. Did the flat blade soldered to the sending unit rust off and away?
  8. I had it die on me once. Granted the fly wheel hit it and destroyed it thus it died on me. Was interesting. But flat out failing, no. I thought I had experienced such on Chunk but that was the coil contacts being dirty which in a sense is similar.
  9. Dex is an interesting fellow. Knows how to work on FI but throw a carb at him and he’s lost. Otherwise he’s got a lot of info and parts to debunk some myths and what not.
  10. 2.5L never got an electric fan during its run. Good ole fashion clutch fan. About that diode or breaker, I think it’s a breaker to prevent an overload or in the event the diode fails and grounds out the compressor.
  11. I think there’s a hole under the lower air vents. I recall seeing something like a hole that was plugged when I had the vinyl floor out of my XJ.
  12. Yeah looks like you got it right. Diode should be close to the compressor. That one is a little tough to explain but it should be in the electrical manual.
  13. That’s…not right at all. The fronts signal/running lamps are dual. The dimmer filament is for the running and brighter is for the signals. It kinda sounds like you might have the filament wires reversed. Just a guess.
  14. If only I had all chrome front end it would be the exact same.
  15. Thank ya. I am not sure what it is but the euro turn signals seem to make the front end modern while still being classic with the 21 slot.
  16. Decided to change up the front end just a little. NOS Euro turn signal lenses.
  17. Yes that valve. Thank you.
  18. Speaking of WIX, our local AMC restoration shop has issued a warning to using WIX filters. Apparently they are now being made without pressure relief valves. I forgot what the owner said exactly but they found that one out the hard way with a 401 they rebuilt.
  19. I haven’t looked at HO but I know Renix era for all the 2.5Ls were like this with the factory AC set up.
  20. Yikes! Reminds me of cylinder 1 on the 2.5L with AC mounted on top of the radiator.
  21. Yeah what Carter said. Though I’ve never heard of those switches just up and fail as they’re mostly metal and not some sort of plastic piece. But if your brake lights aren’t coming on, then the switch and cruise control won’t be able to engage.
  22. That engine bay will make anyone appreciate the XJ/MJ 4.0Ls lack of room.
  23. Damn right!! I’ll always say the same about those stupid liberty mutual commercials.
  24. I’ve heard Geico is awful in AZ.
  25. I believe the grey goes to the compressor. Yes that is the circuit breaker. It’s there in the event the in-line diode to the compressor we’re to fail.
