Luckily I didn’t actually hammer the column shaft. I pushed it and it ended up going down into the column. That was not what I call a fun first time diving into the column.
-
That’s good info. I didn’t know that. I guess what bothered me the most was that the steering wheel never returned to full center after making a turn and I assumed it was due to slop. But knowing this tidbit helps me understand the steering system more and will tell me to quit fiddling with it.

Looks right at home. Better than in my shed staring at me and reminding me to list it lol. Did you pay dzimm a visit for the console lid latch? -
I figured as much but when looking at the exploded parts diagram I figured there wasn’t many place for there to be slop and could have a tighter steering which I do after replacing all the steering parts and having a ZJ box rebuilt. I’m just gonna leave it alone. It ain’t broke, not much more room for improvement, so I’ll quit touching it.
-
Just wait until 2/22/22. And that’s on a Tuesday.
-
Enough to bother me but probably within acceptable tolerance from the factory.
-
I am actually gonna stop messing with it and live with the slight slop. I’m not sure where it is at. I can only suspect the steering shaft itself or the shaft in the column if it has any joints but other than that it’s not worth fiddling with anymore.
-
Word of the wise. The shaft in the column is not directly connected to the shaft on the other side of the firewall. That is all.
-
I have a set of those to put on the XJ.
-
The shaft between the column and box. That’s the only place I can think of where any remaining slop is in the steering.
-
I think I’ll take a stab at seeing if I can send the steering column down a little bit and see if the steering shaft gets a better bite on the box this evening. If I can send it then that’ll confirm the column shaft moved on me. I’ll report back what I find.

Part # for coolant temp sensor (in intake)?
eaglescout526 replied to EUREKA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You can’t find those new anymore. Someone at some point found another style but has a different plug that you’ll have to swap out. I’d have to find the post. I have an IAT laying around that came from one of the 2.5L manifolds I have. -
Back in this. I attempted to replace mine today with a used one in a bit better shape than mine. Well needless to say I put in the new one and came up shorter. Like a couple centimeters short. Now has anyone ever replaced their shaft and run into this issue? I am thinking I need to remove the steering wheel and hammer the shaft in the column down to give more length for the steering shaft to give more bite on both the box and column shaft.

No other lights should come on. The only ones that come on are the seatbelt and brake if the e-brake is applied. The only other lights that can possibly come on would be the emissions timer light and the upshift light if applicable to yours. Fun fact: the upshift light will stay on if you have something plugged into the diag ports like the REM.
-
I may have a plug or two as NOS. Might have to be painted. I’ll take a look
-
Ahhhhhh Disregard my comment then. Only saw they had one post and it was this one.

Me and another local AZ member think the same thing as we knew Fran pretty well. But I am relieved to see and hear it is in great hands once again.
-
@MJCARENA is the previous owner to that beaut. I have had the pleasure to stand aside it and have my truck next to it. I dislike the kid who talked the owner I knew down only to turn around and sell it again. But hey, do please stick around. We all loved(still love) that MJ and want to always see it alive and well!
