Zero reading at TPS, stalling issue
SVPete replied to jeepmjga's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You still should confirm your readings at the TPS. If you do not have an output voltage, it's not working and can still be the problem. -
Zero reading at TPS, stalling issue

And just to make sure......you are leaving the the TPS connector plugged in the TPS when making your checks, right? Not meaning to insult you, just had to ask. -

Still check the TPS by back probing using paperclips to ensure you are making good contact. It is very possible to get a bad part. Happened to me with the TPS on my 1992 Cherokee. It throws you, since it's natural to think that there's no way that the new part you just installed is bad. The car would start, if I started driving to work on the 40mph road near me, it would feel like it was trying to stall about a mile down the road, then pick back up and be fine the rest of the day. If I started it in the morning, and drove the residential 25 mph street, it would die......and seem like a no spark issue. After chasing my tail for a while, I finally replaced the TPS again, and problem solved. Disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR, plug the line with a golf tee (or the like). See if there is any change. -

To ensure you are getting good contact, use some paperclips to back probe rather than trying to stuff your multimeter leads in. Ignoring the TPS for a moment.....do you still have an EGR valve installed? -

Mine broke in 1992, when the truck was four years old.

Catalytic Converter on 1988 4.0
SVPete replied to C1111toro's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That is exactly the same make and part number that I replaced my cat with. Fitment was no problem. I also replaced my front pipe, muffler and tailpipe at the same time. Did the entire exhaust. -
Disagree.... The grille, headlight bezels, and other front end pieces should not be the same as the body color. Mine didn't come like that. Something like that would look like a "(insert favorite cheap paint shop) Special".

Interesting..... Our son was born a year later on the same day as this was built. It did not come with a tachometer. Not sure what the head restraints are. No headrests.

Well, bingo. I have said that so many times. Virtually everything boils down to money.

Absolutely, Yes. I can vouch that the fan shroud does not come out in a simple manner.

Newbie here... How difficult to learn to work on these?

Man, I thought that was a joke. Made me look. It's at 10 pages now. -
And I grew up outside DC too. Just shake my head at that crap there. My Dad got season tickets to the Colts for a few years in the mid 70's cause getting season tickets to the 'Skins just wasn't possible. So is the Colts bouncing in the dead of night "Urban Appropriation" by Indianapolis (not to mention the obvious problems of the city name). Is the move of the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore "Reverse Urban Appropriation"? Could the name "Yankees" be offensive to someone? It's origins aren't exactly complementary. As a Nation, we should rise up and demand a change. Perhaps the name "Cowboys" brings up negative connotations to someone who never actually experienced anything? I live in "Cochise County". Perhaps that offends someone, somewhere, who never actually knew anyone. Generation "fake butt-hurt". We really need to rise up and push back on this.

Besides my middle name (and a good Saint's name it is)......Stripes.

We have transitioned from "every child gets a trophy" to "every child gets fake butt-hurt". Sorry..... Is drinking German beer "cultural appropriation"? Or just drinking beer that you like? "Lighten up Francis"

Since you are replacing the broken glass(?} or regulator(?), recommend you install the window channel and glass division bar (the window channel on the vent/triangle window) prior to installing the window. The glass division bar is actually held in place with a rivet near the bottom, so pulling out the vent window is the easiest way to deal with it. Having replaced the glass weather stripping on my Comanche and 4-door Cherokee, it seemed best to install while the glass was out. Since you will have the door close to gutted, it's a good time to: Cleaning up the peeling black coating on the window trim (unless you have chrome). Replacing the cracked outside window scraper seal. Removing the door latch and cleaning the 30 year old solidified grease out of it. Replacing the door locks if they are wonky. Cleaning and greasing the outside door handles (or replacing). Removing and cleaning the door check (the grease will almost be like beeswax, this is a pain). Replace speakers? General interior cleaning of the door. Replacing the torn/non-existent plastic sheeting that protects the interior door panel.

Certainly check all the pulleys while the belt is off. Grab them and see if there is play. Bearings squeal too....Had that with an alternator and AC delete pulley. Belt coming off does sound like an alignment issue. Might want to see if the bolts for the water pump pulley aren't loose.
-
Absolutely check to see if the harmonic balancer isn't starting to separate and rubbing on/cutting into the timing chain cover. I personally experienced that with my Cherokee. It certainly will cause a squeal. Belt dressing is garbage (another personal experience and opinion). Tried that on my Comanche with a new belt that was squealing/chirping. It seemed to be eating the belt. Cleaned the idler pulley, bought another belt, and tightened the crap out of it. That solved that little issue. Couldn't sell the belt dressing at multiple garage sales for 10 cents or even give it away for free. Ended up donating it to the local Goodwill.

Did you get one yet? I have a set of manual window regulators I would part with.

It's about what a 4-wheel drive Comanche would cost you in 1988.
-
Yeah...not so sure if there are "Comanche Chief" specific parts since this was molded into the door panel of my Pioneer. Nothing like memorializing the inability to spell....i before e and all that. Maybe it's a trim that we don't know about? Perhaps my truck is even more special.

Can't really hear anything for certain. Do you have needle bounce on your speedometer?
