  1. The EGR's job is to take some oxygen away from the air/fuel mix so combustion temps are kept down and NOx formation is cut down. What happens to motors when you squirt nitrous oxide in? It burns faster and hotter. If you watch the tractor pull guys with gas motors, you can hear the pinging when they over NO2 the motors. Waaay too much and you see the backfires out the intake. http://autos.yahoo.com/maintain/repairqa/engine/ques080_1.html Knock sensor retards timing slightly to cut ping. What happens when timing is retarded too much? Power drops. Some internal engine noises mimic ping and cause the sensor to retard timing and really cut the power. I have 20 years as an ASE certified tech (since 1981). I left AMC when Chrysler took over and worked for Ford for awhile. I've been doing mostly parts since '02.
  2. Not as simple as that. Spline count and input shaft length depend on what transmission it was behind. The only transmission behind which could be either 21 or 23 spline was the AW4, and I believe the changeover on that was 1989, at the same time the stick shift went from the Peugeot to the AX15, well before the switch to HO. The AW4 changed over to 23 spline in 08/90. I bought a '90 XJ (build date 07/90) with 60,000 miles on it in '97. It had 4.0/AW4/NP242 (21 spline tcase is currently in my '87 MJ) The Changeover occurred with the HO changeover. 4x4 BA 10/5 are all 21 spline. AX-15 is 23 spline (I had to correct Novak back in '01 when they had BA10 and AX-15 and AX-5 mixed up)
  3. Picture shows 4x4 trans and tcase. Speed sensor for the speedometer in on the tailstock of 2wd trans or tailstock of 4x4 tcase. The other speed sensor on the trans doesn't operate the speedometer. It's for the TCM.
  4. Could be backwards. I haven't bumped into it much in the past 20 years since I "retired" as a tech (car fell on me during the Duvall, WA quake of Jan '95) I started out pouring babbet bearings for Ford Model flatheads.
  5. If it makes the with clutch pressed in, it could be throw out bearing or the springs starting to touch the pressure plate. (gets louder as you push harder) If it doesn't do it in neutral but it does it in gear, more likely the pilot bearing (mine seized with my foot on the clutch in gear waiting for the light to change)
  6. could be caliper slider bolt loose?
  7. Image Not Found
  8. That is weird. It reads right but somehow the link changed?
  9. I have a brand new Borg Warner one for $60. It mainly keeps the motors from pinging.
  10. I passed the sniff test here with no cat (casing was there but nothing inside) with my '86 2.5 5 speed. EGR not functioning causes high NOx (they are caused by excessive combustion temps and/or timing too far advanced, which also causes ping) Slightly too high CO can be caused by misfire, etc (plugs, intake loose) OR thermostat too low.
  11. The way to tell the styles apart. Carbed ones used the Ford style starter and fender mounted solenoid. When they went to TBI they moved the ring gear 3/8" (actually, 10 mm) and went to the solenoid on starter.
  12. Do the ground refresh and voltage test before doing anything ra$h. On the Delco style alt, the plug in wears through the wire after awhile and stops charging.
  13. Wait a sec! Try wiggling the connector on the alt. If it pops up, the wire connector is bad.
  14. The flexplate will be weighted on external balanced motor
  15. XJ rear driveshaft won't be the right length
  16. I'm going out soon to fix my floppy tilt column.
  17. Try bumping the alt with a rubber mallet and see if the light goes out.
  18. I set a shortbox bed on a long box frame. I was planning to use the 2 dr XJ doors and extend the cab back to take up the front 6" + a bit. Then I got my Honcho stepside with much more interior room
  19. The D44 axle will be the next thing to have issues. You are using a 1/2 ton truck to do a 1 ton truck's work.
  20. When I swap the front and rear diff (I already did the '96 XJ or ZJ booster) I plan to upgrade the brakes some more. ZJ for the front and discs on the 8.8" rear. I currently have ceramic brakes (put them on 10 years ago) and haven't done anything, but they need to be warmed up before the braking gets really good. I have far better braking with a load than empty.
  21. NO! NO! NO! 4 dr XJ and Comanche interchange. 2 drs are longer (which is why I was going to use them to make an extended cab MJ) The manual tracks are pretty weak. I have the door panel loose on the driver's side in case I forget and crank my window too far down. I reach in, push the glass up slightly and turn the window crank to get it back up. I have spare red doors for mine with chrome handles and mirrors.
  22. Edit: (fixed) Piston slap gets louder when you pull the plug wire off. Rod bearing knock goes almost totally away when you pull the wire off.
  23. I have the Metric Tonne rear springs and SOA so it doesn't drop much, even with 3300lbs of gravel in it.
  24. I know the 4 speed XJs 84 to 87 came with 3.73 pretty commonly. I have one in my Comanche SOA now. After I get the 8.8 with 4.10s in, I'll be pulling the matching vacuum front and putting in a non-vac with 4.10s then selling the complete 3.73s. (price on the truck will go up too though)
  25. Broken balljoint? Edit: I meant to say tracbar end bracket pulling away from the frame and not balljoint
