A slightly shorter spring over?

MJ Pic Request. 34" Swampers
benjy_26 replied to SayBye's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Swampers are pretty hardcore. I had some on a K5 (LTB's) and they were awesome aired down while off roading, but they really sucked every where else. I switched to BFG KM's, then KM2's and they do pretty much the same thing off road (except in really, really deep mud and clay) and are quiet and comfortable enough for a daily driver. They're even good in the snow. -

Looking for a bored renix throttle body
benjy_26 replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
In TX, it depends on the year of the vehicle. My 87 needs no cat to pass safety and emiasions. On the subject of a bored out TB making a difference, if you have a high flowing exhaust, intake, and injectors, it'll give you a bit more power in the high RPM range. If you have a bigger cam and better flowing intake and head, it really pays off. If you're bone stock, I suspect just cleaning your old one will have the same effect. -
Ba10/5 3rd gear whine, how much time do I have?
benjy_26 replied to teamsmith's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That's the spec, although it should be GL-3 rather than GL-5, I believe. But I think that's more important in the AX-15. I used 85W-140 for keeping a whiny transmission quiet. I drove it for a couple of years, sold it, and the new owner had no problems for a t least a year. Then we lost contact. If I'm not mistaken, the Mobil 1 75-90 is yellow metal safe, even though its classified as a GL5. -

Who has over 200,000 on a daily driver?
benjy_26 replied to 88AMComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Approaching 200k on what I assume is the original drivetrain in my MJ, and I had well over 260k on my ZJ before yanking the engine for a mild hi-po build on the 4.Slow. -
Rear under bed Mounted Battery
benjy_26 replied to daking's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Wait... I always thought that the smaller the gauge # signified a physically bigger (thicker) cable. I'm running 2AWG welding cable for all my major grounds and power leads (starter, alternator to battery, et al.) and it is some seriously big cable. Someone please enlighten me.- 16 replies

Check out my build thread. I had a 2.25" downpipe bent up and flared to meet a 2.5" Magnaflow glasspack that directly feeds a 2.5" Magnaflow big case muffler. Quiet and deep at idle, deep and throaty under load, and best of all, no drone when cruising.

HID conversions can be somewhat delicate in my experience. If you off road or travel a lot of rough roads, I'd stay away from them and just do the putco harness and H4 conversion.
-
I made my own harness with 40A relays and 10 guage wiring as well as high heat sockets. MUCH better performance out of standard sealed beams. I recently picked up a set of Anzo H4 conversion housings and noticed a slight improvement over the sealed beams. I am runnibg the cheap H4's the housings came with, but I think that the wiring upgrade is the best thing you can do to improve your lighting.

Dude, a SM420 is a TALL tranny. It may hang down some if you don't massage the tunnel.

Cool! Best advice I can give yoy is to take everything apart that you feel comfortable messing with and give it a good cleaning. These trucks are pretty simple and reliable, you just have to get caught up on the maintenance.

I ran errands all day today. I have 31" BFG A/T's, 3.55's, AX4, and a 3" lift along with my 2.5. I also have a VERY free flowing exhaust, a new Wix air filter, 8.8mm wires, and no carpet or insulation in the cab. I keep track of speed and miles via gps. In mixed (mostly highway driving), I averaged around 22mpg. This is on a fairly warm day, with no large hills and telatively little wind. I also keep it under 60 and drive accelerate and decelerate in a... leisurely manner.

Awesome. I'll put it up on my photobucket account and post it here. It's too valuable to keep hidden. :)

Thanks gents! I'll be picking it up soon, then.

Hello all. I went to the local pull-a-part and found an 88 SWB with a clean bed. My bed is kind of beat up, and I was thinking of picking this one up. Is $200 reasonable for a bed with no rust or (noticeable) dents?

Cruiser, if you don't mind, may I have a copy of that diagram as well?

Just wondering, but what's the reasoning behind a dual exhaust on an inline engine? I've seen more and more vehicles with that kind of set up lately.

AX-15 gear oil development!!!

I'm using Mobil 1 (or Super Syn, I forget) 10-30 in my AX4. Shifts like butter! -
AX15 can handle it, the AX5 won't.

benjy_26 replied to pitbull4x4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you'vd got that much rake, maybe a new set of front springs is in order, just to level it out some. OME makes 1" lift springs that ride very, very well and should get you leveled fairly well. As for the back, if you haul a lot, I'd leave it SUA. If you go SOA, you just gotta lift things into the bed that much higher. -
Maybe your truck has been swimming. :-/
