  7. only if the 242 is a very early model and has a 21 spline input. and only if the trans is 4wd. If the 242 is 23 spline, then NOW is the time to get the AX-15. it's the very heart of your drivetrain, not an afterthought for later. :thumbsup:

  9. and take lots and lots of pictures as you go. :thumbsup: there are lots of unused plugs in an MJ/XJ so you'll want to know for sure what goes where and what goes nowhere. and download a factory shop manual for the XJ too.

If I was doing it, I'd gut the MJ and swap over everything. dash, wires, everything. you'll still need to address the rear driveshaft and rear lighting splices. by the way, the power difference between HO and renix is inconsequential. The big benefits of HO (as I see it anyway) are that it's younger and has a modern computer system.
  11. the answer is part science and part opinion. some guys have said their trucks with 33s on 3.07s are tolerable (at best). I hated 30s on 3.07s. I now have 33s on 4.10s are deem it acceptable (but wish for 4.88s). 3.55 geared axles are everywhere and can be worthwhile if they are cheap enough. 4.10s are a bit harder to find but still out there.
  12. to the left is an AX-15, to the right is an AX-5. The center ring is aluminum on the AX-15. It's steel on the AX-5 and AX-4. ignore the bellhousing on the AX-15 in this pic, as it is from a Dakota.

The AX-4 and AX-5 look very similar to the AX-15 but that big inch thick ring of metal you see between the front and back halves is made of a different metal. for the life of me I can't remember which one is steel and which is aluminum. :( hopefully someone else will chime in with the answer. bring a magnet with you when examining a potential transmission. The AX-4/5 will not bolt to a 4.0 (not that you would want to anyway since it's weaker and will likely blow up)
  14. looks like a peugeot. the peugeot splits into a left and right half and you can tell that from the row of bolts along the top and bottom along the spine.
  15. and be sure it's not an AX-5 either. KNOW the differences before you go see it.

  18. I've had good success with the little recharge kits on my 00 dakota. there's a tiny leak somewhere, but it's been really cheap to keep topping it off. do you have any pressure in the system?

  20. yes but those are true stories. and there are lots of them. mine blew up while just tooling along in rush hour traffic. 2wd with monstrous 30" tires. some last, some don't. I might be inclined to leave one in a truck if it still worked ok, but I would NEVER spend a dime on a peugeot beyond new gear oil. I give the same advice to people who have a dana 35. invest your money into something that will last. :thumbsup:

I would start looking for that AX-15. :thumbsup: bad peugeots have been known to go bad again rather quickly after their rebuilds. :( the case is very weak and if it deforms even just a bit, it'll never be as-new again. car-part.com might be of help in junkyard searches. the site organizes parts by part number, so be sure to search for the various years of XJ and YJ and TJ. oh and try to get the t-case attached if yours is 4wd.

  23. there are some similar looking pads in my dakota and my best guess (at least in that truck) is that they prevent the wind from rushing up the a-pillar gap along the door seal (which might carry rain up with it too). just a guess.
