  1. what's wrong with the engine on the parts truck? Blown up? or just not running?
  2. 95-01 Explorers are disk braked, 94 and earlier are drums. other than that they are essentially the same axle. careful though, 3.73 geared 8.8s are common, but HP 3.73 geared Dana 30 front axle are not.
  3. Only the Explorer closely matches the Comanche. Rangers are too narrow, F-150s are too wide.
  4. What vehicle did the 8.8 come from?
  5. Like that they were the only small truck in history to have a fuel injected 6 cylinder engine and a solid front axle? That they had more available weight carrying capability than most modern half-ton fullsize trucks? That an MJ once set the land speed record for its class? that they dominated the SCCA truck races? :dunno:
  6. when it comes to MJs, I'm not sure what constitutes a "reliable source" in regards to a speech class. Even the dealership brochures have errors. :dunno: What is the theme of the speech? history of the truck?
  7. whoa... :ack: the Dana 30 looks tiny.
  8. I cut mine flush with the bushings.
  9. It does oxidize though.
  10. The flipping issue was a problem with the mutts.
  11. There's 2 separate stories mixed in there. The IFS/IRS vehicle you're referring to was the MUTT. It came out in 1959. Ford was indeed making Jeeps during WWII, but they were pretty much the same thing as Willys was making, just with a ford logo here and there. :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M151_MUTT WWII Jeeps made by Ford: http://www.jeepfamily.com/Year_Guide/19 ... rd_GPW.htm
  12. we can only wish our trucks were made from aluminum. :(
  13. any lift on your Jeep?
  14. That'll only show you if it's super-duper bad. It's like cancer. The earlier it's detected, the better. You need to pull up the carpet. At the very least, if the under insulation is soaked, you can rip it out and help stop the accelerated demise of the floorboards. All Jeeps were steel. I believe you're thinking of the early landrovers.
  15. I think you should look harder for a 3.4.
  16. my 88 looked like that too, but it was due to the bearings disintegrating long ago. What was left was the smashed housing. Boy was that a pain to pull out. :(
  17. I didn't see it listed so I'll just make sure you know you'll need the bellhousing. the Peugeot bellhousing will not work. Oh, and you'll need the AX-15 crossmember and trans mount from an MJ/XJ too. It's a pretty straightforward swap. The 242 is a great t-case that allows fulltime 4wd, but you'll need the shift gate for inside the cab.
  18. It's no myth. but it's also not excessive. I have a 1999 Wrangler combo in my 88. Wrangler on top, MJ on the bottom
  19. which is the opposite of inexpensive. :D none of those options sounds incredible good with a limited budget. You'd need EVERYTHING from the 4.0 Jeep including the interior wiring, dash, fuel pump and plumbing, driveshafts, exhaust, hood, hood latches and the radiator support. It's best to buy a complete running donor. For a 350 you need all new mounts, plumbing, radiator, driveshafts, etc. all custom and/or really expensive. Not to mention that your axles are suddenly the weak link. The 3.4L bolts right in using your existing exhaust and accessories. you just need to balance the flywheel and add in an aftermarket inline fuel pump. add to it an aftermarket carb and you should get a decent Jeep out of the deal. What isn't working right with the 2.8L? Maybe it'd be best to just fix the thing for now.
  20. every one of those swaps will require a whole heck of a lot of work and possible a lot of money too. Which engine do you have now?
  21. been too long for me to remember the size, but I just wanted to chime in that you should use nothing weaker than grade 8. just in case.
  22. yup, AALs designed for XJs will tend to give about half of the advertised lift when used on an MJ.
  23. http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/cto/1612313069.html no photos though.
  24. brought home my new-to-me rust-free gas tank yesterday. Gunna be a while before I get it installed in the 88, but whatever. I'm just ecstatic to have it. :D Thanks Bo!!
