The ignition switch is at the base of the column. You don't need to take the column apart at all to get to it.

Remember that the individual gauges are swappable, so if you can find just a replacement tach, you won't need to buy a whole new cluster.

Yes, but 2wd and 4wd cables are not the same length. 2.5 cables may also be different lengths, and there's also the differences between cruise and non-cruise cables. You're looking at 4-8 different cables, so try to get as close as you can when you get a replacement.

AFAIK, the only difference between 87-90 harnesses is that the 87 might not have a ballast resistor. Also, again not 100% on this, but I think that the XJ and the MJ used different firewall plugs to connect to the dash harness.

That stupid light in my first XJ used to come on all the time in 5th cruising at 70. First thing I did with all my manual Jeeps was pop the cluster and take that light out.

There are no differences between XJ and MJ crossmembers. The BA 10/5 and AX-15 do use different crossmembers, however.
