Hypothetical Trade

I’ve got a TIG welder I don’t need. It’s a Lincoln Square Wave 200 and it’s a good little machine. A friend of mine is interested in it, but not at the price I’d like for it. He proposed a trade for his Comanche. Not sure the year, but it’s a pretty solid truck that needs floors, there’s some rust on each door, but overall it’s a good truck. It’s an Sportruck, 4x4, manual, with an 4.0 that doesn’t run. It’ll turn over, but the story is that one day it quit running and there it sat for the past 6(?) years.

 

Thing is, I need another vehicle less than I need an extra welder. Thoughts?

I suppose the MJ might be an easier sell than the welder. A running MJ might be worth a little more too, I'm not sure. 

 

I think it comes down to whether or not you really want another project. It's a shortbed, like your Eliminator, so I don't think it would be anymore useful than your Eliminator, so it would probably just be something to fix and then sell. Then you've got the issue of finding a stopping point on fixing it. Do you just make it run, or do you make it run and fix the rust?

Or maybe you get it, fix it, and then use that as your daily driver and take the time to get the CJ to the point that you want it at. Then once you've go the CJ ready for daily driver duties, sell the Sportruck. Or keep it and use it as your winter truck to keep the Eliminator out of the elements all winter.

 

It's a tough decision, but personally, unless you want another project, I don't think I would trade.

The way I see it, new welders are made everyday….MJ’s on the other hand are less by the day.

If you could turn the MJ around quick, what would make it worthwhile?  Or if someone bought straight from him so he had the cash, how much would it take?

I think what’s keeping me on the hook with this potential deal is my stash of SCCA parts and getting that project out of my system. This truck has the right patina that it could pull off the “rode hard and put away wet” look.

 

Maybe I’ll try and get out that way next weekend and give it a good once over.

Yes and no. I physically have space, but in doing so I know that I’d drive my current truck even less than I already don’t.

I was trying to go see the truck this weekend but scheduling didn’t work out. Still on the fence, but I dug out the set of wheels I’ve had.

 

 

I gave them a quick once over. For how filthy they were, they came up okay. There’s still a ton of sconge that needs to get worked out, but all of them need some kind of attention around the bead lip. We’ll see when I get around to that… I’ve had these for 14 years now.

Perhaps something subconscious?

 

These things have had the same red muddy crust on them since I got them. They came from Austin (xjrev10) when I picked up a 2wd ‘91 Pioneer from him. Story was that they were on a 2.5/4x4 truck that a friend of his picked up that supposedly was used as a plow truck by the Archers in the ‘90s. The frame was gone, the engine was painted orange, and it was wheeled hard for the remainder of its life. Three of the five wheels had ratty tires that had broken beads and were so filled with dirt that Austin was using them as weight in the bed for winter traction.

Still no decisions made.

 

Didn’t have much time to spend with it today, but it got a CPS thrown at it. It’s got no spark. It does have fuel and I think the injectors are firing judging from a wet spark plug I pulled out.

 

The jury is still out. I’d like to hear it run so I think I’m going to go through my spare junk and grab all the known good sensors I’ve got. If this truck comes home with me, something needs to go. Three vehicles is already too many for me.

Looks like a good one to drive when the weather is less than ideal. That is an awesome grille guard.
