meh.  I kinda stopped caring about what they put out since I'm apparently no longer the target audience.  :dunno:

 

having said that, I feel it steals too many styling cues from the budget Jeeps, but my guess is that's what they're going for.

Yeah, they started the Wagoneer in 1963 as a comfortable wagon that was more upscale than a traditional 4x4.

 

They had independent suspension as an option, an automatic transmission (a first for a 4x4) and an optional single speed transfer case.  The 70's saw one of the first AWD transfer cases in a traditional 4x4.  These days, you almost can't get a part time 4WD case in any SUV.

 

By the time the Grand Wagoneer was done in 1991 it was purely a luxury vehicle that happened to still have capable 4x4 creds.

 

With all of the electronic do-dads and gizmos on the new one, it will do reasonably well off road by comparison while competing against Lincoln, Cadillac, and Land Rover.  Sure, it will be targeted more at the high end on-road crowd but that's the demographic with the money to buy this thing, just like it was the demographic in the 80's.

I think the front end looks good, otherwise it looks like a school bus with a jeep grille. And why the Wagoneer name? There's no styling cues inspinred by the old one, and doesn't look that much capable offroad. They might as well have called it the new Commander, since at least they have the 7-passenger thing in common... I also hate the kinda melted cheese look that seems to slowly creep into the Jeep brand since Fiat layed their dirty hands on Chrysler!!! :fistshake1:

If the old waggy hadn't existed, the new waggy would be a handsome vehicle. Hard not to want to see some homage paid to the old Jeep. Especially since it looks like a combination of every brand large SUV out there...I see Navigator, Explorer, Palisade, Escalade. Would have been nice to depart from the norm.

I still haven’t seen much description beyond the cosmetics, but also I’ve been on data all day so I haven’t wanted to watch any of the videos, just read the articles. 
The big question is whether it’s body on frame. Most of the competitors in the segment are still, I think. It looks a lot like a bigger, boxier Grand Cherokee, though, so it’s hard to say. But even if it is, it’s definitely got independent suspension, so very unlikely to be on the JT chassis like some of the speculations I’ve seen.

The overall concept is pretty similar to the competition in the target market. Large luxury, which means lots of technology (count the screens), and a “hybrid”, although no real info about powertrain options out there yet. 
This is still just a concept. It’ll be interesting to see how similar the real deal (if it does go to market) will be to this. Initial concepts are usually pretty easily distinguished from what comes off the assembly line. I also don’t think recycling the nameplate is going to mean much for sales. I doubt those interested in a classic Waggy share the same market as a new, premium, modern luxury SUV. That much is pretty obvious from how few people remember the ZJ Waggy ever existed. 
 

But yes, I do wish they’d tried to distinguish it a little bit from the modern Jeep lineup. Going full retro and recreating the OG Waggy also isn’t the answer though. It needs to be modern to compete in its target market, not 60 years old.

Keep in mind this isn't the production model, it's just a concept vehicle.  That being said, it's about what I expected it to look like.  The thing to keep in mind is that the original Wagoneer was a luxury suv, this wagoneer is also a luxury suv but you get a lot more today than you did back then in the "luxury" name. 

 

I think they nailed it as far as being a 4wd luxury suv, but it definitely blends with the masses thanks to the terrible styling Fiat has brought to the brand.  The third row window looks like it was taken straight from the Renegade and it's very ugly on this vehicle.  The front isn't terrible but they definitely could have retained more styling cues from the original.  The rear looks like a Land Rover, they really should have kept the vertical taillight style like the original and done more with the back end.

I’ve also heard this said (less the IRS) about the JT as well, which isn’t true at all. 

 

I can't find where I read it now, but the original mock up for the JT was allegedly built on a modified 1500 frame, along with a mockup for a midsize ram truck (that sadly has never come to be). But mock ups predate even pre production, and all road testing for JT was done with its extended JL frame. I expect they'll either use a modified 1500 frame or widen the JT's frame for this, just to maximize profit.
