What the heck is up with MJ owners?

Or rather, MJ sellers? Seems like MJ owners and good folks, but MJ sellers are well, not-to-be-trusted.

Except for member Wesleypipesyo, all I'm getting on CL is guys who want top-dollar for rust-buckets, or projects, as they call them. Or they'll have a decent looking one, but start asking questions, and they get all weird and nasty. Like I've caught them in a lie or something. I just don't get it.

I know it's not ALL MJ sellers, but so far, MJ shopping is leaving me a bit annoyed. :fs1:

Seems like I should be able to get a pretty good MJ for 3500K? Right?

Hi Tom,

Ever heard the term "CraigsList Flakes"?  It applies to both sellers and to buyers on Craigslist, unfortunately.  Craigslist can be a very useful, but many times it is worth EXACTLY what you pay for it...Nothing.  Because it is free to advertise, lots of people are just putting a hook in the water on the chance they will hook the Big Tuna.

But it is also a place where you can find a good value on many things IF you are patient.

Great points! My Dad used to say that I had the patience of Job". However, Job never tried to buy a Jeep Comanche!

You never know.

I tried to buy my 88 twice. First time, it was in almost all original paint. Guy listed it, I tried calling over 3 days, had a friend who was local call, no response. 3 months later its up for sale again, spraybombed (same guy owned it) and I bought it 3 day later. Then with trucks since then, its "oh, I can't take any more photos", "its pending sale" (still for sale a month later), and "It runs great! Just needs a starter, battery, and clutch".

hell, buyers can be total dumbasses- friend is selling a TJ in order to get a new MJ. needs a motor, first guy sends him an offer (not unreasonable), friend offered to meet between. his response? "I can't spend any more, thats all I have and I need a car today!". So he wanted a jeep that needed a motor. What.

"ran when parked (15 years ago)"

"RARE"

"NO TIRE KICKERS OR JOYRIDERS"

"RUNS GREAT, JUST NEEDS ROD BEARINGS"

85% of Craigslist is useless crap. If you keep looking though you can wade through to the good stuff. I've made quite a few nice scores from CL ads, but you have to sort through the junk first.

"Rare" is my new favorite adjective. I'm seeing that on everything!

I absolutely love Craigslist!!!!!

But there is an art to finding the deal you're looking for.  Once you've done it for a while, you get really good at quickly sorting the crap from the gems.

Also, you have to watch it every day and be ready to move quick and fast.

It took me about 7 months to find the right MJ on CL and I was partially settling for a 2WD. I went and looked at 4 other MJs and ended up declining to buy them. Craigslist is definitely a patience game and I agree with MrSimon that you literally have to check every day. I personally prefer an app on my iPhone called CSmart for Craigslist. It lets you create a search and specify REALLY wide areas (even "All US") for your search and then save your search. The free version works just fine, but I believe the paid version will even send you updates when you get a hit on your search.

If you weren't in CO I'd probably have bought your MJ several years ago when I got mine. Where you're selling definitely dictates price too. Here in Northern VA everything is overpriced on CL and everyone thinks they have a goldmine they're selling. Most of the time I can do better at a JY or online than CL for parts.

CL is great, but you have to be patient and not get your hopes up, half of the people posting are first timers and the replies go to their spam folder and they never get back to you. Good luck!

@MrSimon you're last line is spot-on! It's not easy to keep looking at the some posts several times a day hoping a new one pops up.

Wooden block lift is no joke... a F250 around here used a pair of 4x4 fence post on its springs to get a big lift. Looked like it was going to give way any minute!

YIKES!!!

I've found that most of the decent deals on MJ's in my area seem to be listed on the local Jeep Facebook groups and most never even make it to Craigslist. I know Facebook sucks and all but if you're looking for a Comanche, it's worth joining all the Jeep groups in your area and all the Comanche buy/sell/trade groups too. That seems to be where most people are listing stuff these days, and communication can (not always but usually) be easier since you are dealing with people in a bit more personal, real name based manner than through anonymous emails/texts/etc.

If I was selling it I'd look to get between $2,000 and $2500. I'd probably list it at $3000 and let them talk me down. Not related, but those look like bucket seats.

Personally, as a buyer, I don't make an offer unless I've tested and looked it over front to back. When I bought my MJ on craigslist it was worth every penny of the $2500 the guy wanted for it so after checking it over I offered him asking price as I thought it was fair.

Maybe I'm unusual, but I think a fair price is a fair price. Everyone else on CL seems to think whatever is being asked is too high and will never offer asking price, which is why when I sell stuff I list higher than I want to get close to what I want.

Just my $0.02.

What would you ask for this 88 2wd shortbed? Rust free. Nice body. 4.0 with auto and AC. Needs the bench seat fixed. Matching tires. 189K original miles referenced on the Arizona title.

Kinda the same thing I thought.

The buckets were scabbed in there. a bench seat needing reupholstery is in the bed. Has a sliding window also...
