moparbrown
Hey everyone - I'm Dillon finally found a Comanche! Just brought home the "new" truck on Saturday. Black 91 short bed 4.0 rwd manual 225k. Drove it from Junction City Kansas home to St. Louis. 5+ hours with no issues! (Other than some headlight flickering) It's my first mj, we also have an 08 JK that the wife drives. As far as I can tell it's pretty much stock except for the seats and crappy pioneer stereo (that's connected to home theater speakers). Drivers floorpan has been redone, has some random patches of rust but overall really good. The tailgate works, looks like new cap and wires, and it just passed Missouri safety inspection with no problems so I'm happy with it!! It's my new daily! I traded it for my 07 charger that had 190k, I'm betting this will outlast the charger by a long shot! Drivers side does have some front fender damage and a few dings down the side but doesn't really bother me at the moment. I plan to eventually convert to 4x4 and probably give it a small lift with AT tires so it can handle a little off-roading. To Do List: Oil change, fix parking brake, install bumper, paint job (cheap at home), needs tail pipe, new stereo, headliner, fix pillar lights, switch someone for a bench seat?, find front grill (mines cracked & chopped up) oil pressure gauge doesn't work. Keyav8r
Welcome to the addiction, er, I mean the forum. Looks like you've got a pretty good starting point. Suggestion - add your location under your avatar. Helps if people know where you are when you're looking for parts.
DirtyComanche
Welcome. Not sure why you would want to go to a bench seat. They suck. If you really want a bench I'd look at something like the second row out of a minivan, most of them are narrow enough to fit, are actually comfy, and have headrests. I'm sooo jealous of that guy that swapped in a 60/40 bench from (I think) a dakota. it looked comfy as all get out. MJ benches are, well, basic. Basic, yes, that's a word that could describe them. And no headrests. I'm not exactly a safety Nazi, but I'd rather not break my neck because somebody hit me from behind. DirtyComanche
^^^^ Didn't know that. It always surprised me that they got away without them before then too. Still, doesn't look like the type of seat I'd call comfy... Having a screwed up back and all.
Pete M
I think 88 and up had headrests.

They are definitely back killers.....
DirtyComanche
I think 88 and up had headrests. Maybe in the US market? My 89 didn't, and it was definitely original when I got it. I swapped to buckets immediately because of the lack of headrests.
Pete M
interesting. :hmm: my whole reality is thrown for a loop! well, maybe not, but still. seats without headrests are just stupid. :fs1:
HOrnbrod
Bench seat headrests are listed in the 87-90 parts manual, so they did exist.

Canada might not have mandated it at that point. Honestly, I don't recall if I've ever seen a MJ here with a bench and headrests, but it's rare to find one with a bench still either way. 87Warrior
Welcome to the club. I would have bought you a beer or burrito or something if I had known you were in Junction City! I know that truck and agree it is quite the driver! The seller, who I know personally, tried to get me to buy that truck the day it came in. You better start the rust treatment on the floor pretty quick. I recall some rot visible under the cab (but maybe they fixed it before selling). I was shocked the rockers and cab corners were so clean! If you are in the area again, I'll give you a couple of bench seats :)

The drivers floor pan had a big hole in it but they patched it- I still need to pull up the flooring and look it over and do some work to cut all the rust out but I sprayed some rust reformer on it right away. Minuit
As someone who had a Comanche bench seat for years, you don't want a Comanche bench seat. I've always thought those later XJ seats were unsupportive and flat, but they still blow the bench out of the water. My back was fine, but my @$$ wasn't too happy after about an hour of driving. Not good. There's a reason you can find people basically giving them away. Not to mention that quite a few of them didn't come with headrests as they've said. Callmehickross
Truck looks sick before you paint it you may want to do a 97+ front end and maybe doors they can be had for pretty cheap I bought brand new fenders for 88 bucks for both sides and got a front clip and doors off my old xj , looks so much better in my opinion, regardless good luck with the build you have a sick rig on your hands Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Zambeezy
Looks great, welcome to the club! I have a bench in my '92 and it's far from comfortable but I think with some re-padding it could be decent. Has headrests and like others have said I'm surprised the earlier models didn't have them but I'm glad mine does. I just picked mine up about 2 months ago and this is my first vehicle to really wrench on but I'm learning a lot from these guys here. This forum has been SO valuable for the few things I've had the time to do on my 'manche. You'll love it
