Keyav8r
National news tonight had a warning about a new phone scam. Your phone rings with a number you don't recognize (even if your phone is on the Do Not Call registry). The caller says "This is John Doe with the customer service department (or something like that). Can you hear me clearly?". If you respond "Yes", they record your voice, then use it as proof that you approved a charge, service, or contract. If you get one of these calls, hang up without saying anything. HOrnbrod
It's simple to avoid these worthless parasites. If you don't recognize the caller, don't answer the phone. If the caller's legit they can leave a voicemail. The Do Not Call registry is a joke.

Dzimm
There is a trick to stopping these calls. Record your voicemail message as the old dialup sound. Ya know that annoying changing tones buzzing sound. If the telemarketing companies hear this sound, their software automatically puts you on the do not call list because it thinks your number is a fax machine. It only takes a little while to basically stop the calls because most of the caller databases are shared between companies. The only problem is that you then have to tell all your contacts to wait through the dialup sound before they can leave a message. There are videos on YouTube how to do this. Ωhm
My iPhone allows me to set a default ringtone and separate ringtone for my contacts. By setting my default to "Bulletin", which I find pleasing, then setting all my contacts to "old phone" I don't even have to look at my phone to determine who's calling. Kind of a pain in the azz at first, but once set will work very well. If as mentioned, someone I know calls me not in my contact list, they will leave a message. At that point I'll add them to my contacts and change the ringtone. Seems during the day my phone will ring with a relaxing and pleasing sound and then I go Ha Ha. 86FUBAR
I used to have custom ring tones etc.. for all my contacts, but I use my phone for work so I get a lot of calls form people that I'm dealing with on a daily and it's not uncommon for me to get calls from all over the U.S. so if I did the whole "I don't answer unless I know them and if not they can leave a message" thing then I wouldn't get anything done ! If you can do that then great but I simply can't . Besides if I don't know you I'll just hang up !! I don't care :)
Hypoid
Unless your wife knows sign language! Or knows you can reads lips... :) I got bit by only one scam: A polite young man called and said he was with the telephone company, and they were testing the lines (or something like that), and would I please dial 9 and hang up. I forget how much the bill was, but my Mrs. called that woman in Washington and chewed her ear pretty good.
