When did AMC stop being AMC?

I just got the title in my name for the 88 Eliminator yesterday, and, as a make, it still has American Motors. I thought, since AMC was bought out by Chrysler in '87, that, the Jeeps would have had "Jeep" as the make in '88. When did Chrysler officially get rid of American Motors?

Those titles are weird as the make for a jeep is "jeep" and never was AMC or Chrysler. Just as Chevy is a make even though its parent is GM. When it comes to jeeps AMC or Chrysler may be the manufacturer but are not the make.

My '91 title correctly lists the make as JEEP, the model as Comanche, and the style as truck

August 1987 was the official buyout of Jeep from AMC to Chrysler, IIRC.  '88 models built prior to then are all AMC branded.  Anything after that may or may not have some Chrysler stuff on it here and there, depending on the parts that got pulled off the shelf lol.

Looked at my '93 XJ, ahh hell nah, they listed the Body as "SW", station wagon, seriously!?!?

If an XJ isn't a SW what is it? It is a SW by any definition even if 4wd. In 1984 when it came out Renault/AMC had ads comparing it to a Volvo 240 wagon.

Definition of STATION WAGON:  an automobile that has a passenger compartment which extends to the back of the vehicle, that has no trunk, that has one or more rear seats which can be folded down to make space for light cargo, and that has a tailgate or liftgate   http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/station%20wagon

If they listed it as truck you would pay more in registration fees most if not all places. I pay $56 more a year for my Comanche "truck" than my "station wagon."

SUV was a marketing term not an official designation for "type." For sure through 2006 there was no registration designation for "SUV" nationally in the NCIC. How would the SUV designation differ from SW definition posted above? It doesn't as far as I can see.

Most people consider the 1963 Wagoneer as the first SUV. Why they ignore the earlier Willys Station Wagon is strange.

The answer is somewhat convoluted. Chrysler billed the buyout as a merger and the AMC nameplate was used on some of the Canadian built sedans into the 90s. Chrysler renamed the AMC "division" the Jeep/Eagle Corporation when the buyout became official in August of 87. In November 97 Chrysler dissolved the Jeep/Eagle Corporation and the Jeep brand became part of the Chrysler Corporation.

As far as the info on the titles, at least in Illinois, has always been at the discretion of the person filling out the paperwork. I have one AMC car listed as a "trailer" for the model.

They basicly used all the AMC parts in inventory and those that came to them from contracts signed previously. My 88 is no doubt all AMC. If I run across AMC logos or product /shiping tags on "Old Stock " listings I'm more interested in buying them. Esp accessory's.  I think Chrysler really started cutting the accessory production after they took them over. Like:

Hidden winch kit front bumper

1986 Chrome rear bumper ( of which Don is the only owner known to posses one)

AMC mud flaps with the 3 color logo on them

Rear window black louver ( I think I own the only one I have ever seen) anyone else? I still have the box with the AMC sticker on it.

Running boards

Street Comanch kits

Chrome handle for tailgate

Chrome bed light

Genuine "Comanche" Stetson hat,  Dealer promo ( I have one)

Long bed roll bar
