What tools do you carry in your DD?

Not tire accesories, just roadside repair hand tools. In my younger days if I was driving out of town the whole tool box went into the bed of the truck. About 110 lbs worth.Started thinkin how unnecessary all that was, downsized. First, do you want to carry your good IE, expensive tools or El Cheapos?Being in the vehicle increases the chance of loss thru theft or losing a wrench alongside the road after using it. If your broke down this is no time for a cheap tool to break. So which is it? Also SAE and Metric or just what your vehicle needs? At first I got a 3/8 drive socket set SK, covering 1/4 to 1 3/8, ratchet, ext handle and speed handle. 2 flat blade screwdrivers, 2 phillips head screwdrivers. Then the 3/8 drive Torx, Phillips, flat head and Allen heads.12 in Crescent, 6in crescent, 8in vise grips, 4in vise grips, water pump and 6in slip joint pliers, roll plastic tape. Fuses I keep in the glove box.packette hand wipes. At first used a .30 cal ammo box but switched to a .50 for room. This discussion is only for DD'S. Not when your going rock climbing and got everything to swap out a rear end or axle. image_209027.gif

i have a rubbermaid small bin in both my dd's. jumper cables and tow straps i've used countless times in my dd's. i keep some ratchet straps and bungee cords, cheap rubber boots that fit over my boots i'm wearing, those have come in handy hooking up a strap to a car burried in a foot of snow. light, gloves, 4 way tire tool in case i end up helping someone with a different lug nut size that is unprepared, usually a gallon of coolant to, but i've snagged my emergency stock for other vehicles. i also have an old camp folding shovel i found in my first house i bought.

the few tools i keep in my dd are el cheapo, between my work tools that are way too expensive, then trail tools, by the time i get to dd tools they're just some junky stuff.

20 foot tow strap, a tree saver, small folding military shovel, cables a tool box with wrenches socket,

ratchets basically all my hand tools (cause the one thing you need is always the one thing you left at home).

Used to haul my Hi-Lift around on my Cj but have yet to create a way to lock it on the MJ.

Iv'e found a easy way to keep tow straps, ratchet tie downs, battery jumper cables etc, neat is to take a pair of panty hose, or nylons, thigh highs, cut the feet off, and roll them over the aforementioned items like a rubber band. How and where you get the hose is your problem, and business.. Maybe we should start another thread here? NAW..

I carry a basic ratchet kit from Home Depot. Has SAE and Metric, variety of extensions and a bit driver with bits. In addition to that, I keep some assorted screw drivers, pliers, duct tape and a good knife on me. Usually have some cheap jumper cables, 12v air compressor, and tow straps.

Craftsman socket set (extra set), these are the only things I don't scrimp on. Cheap sockets, don't have any use for them (except for use as loaners or give away), enough extensions to change a CPS, cheapo wrenches, screwdrivers, black tape, vice grips, wire cutters, jumper cables, 4- way tire tool, folding Torks set, OBD scan tool, cheapo digital multi-meter, folding E-tool. The small stuff fits in two HF canvas bags, one bag holds really small and important things like the multi-meter,and T-60 Torks socket, etc. Small bag fits into larger bag, makes for a handy little tool kit that is easily transferred from vehicle to vehicle. The good tools stay at home, cause it sucks having good tools lost or stolen.

I used to do all of what you guys are describing, but anymore in my MJ I only have jumper cables (a really good set I bought years ago- good jumpers make a world of difference!) and a tow strap that I inherited from who knows where. In the age of cell phones I just don't see the need anymore to keep all this stuff in the truck. If I were to take it on a long trip, that may be a different story, but daily, I don't think its needed. OH! I always have my AAA card on me too!

Hundred mile an hour tape, 5-50 cord , blue mag light and a beat - stick.

Oh", and extra lighters!!! :chillin:

Just for curiosity, why would you carry tape meant for temporary patches on aluminum-skinned aircraft? :hmm:

I carry a cheapo target metric& standard mixed tool set, that way if it's stolen it doesn't hurt nearly as bad as the Snappy tools. ;)

I have actually used it quite a bit over the years... I digress:

Starter went out on the MJ downtown - Tow

Tried pushing the MJ past E, mistake - 5 gals of gas

Grenaded trans on Ram - Tow

Blew off trans line on ZJ - Tow

Blew off trans line on ZJ - Tow

Blew off trans line on ZJ - Tow

All that crap, and I never paid for a tow or the gas. AAA took care of all of it. I know about the trans line on the ZJ, same thing as the XJ. The trans has a spring clamp going to the cooler, and in the event of over pressure, it blows itself off in self preservation. But the spring clamp gets weak, and it blows whenever. The fix was to heat the flex, push it over the flange on the line, and replace the spring clamp with hose clamps. It took me 3 times of putting it off to finally get it fixed.

As for the trans on the ram, forget about it.
