I was under the Comanche today looking at my O2 sensor - a lot has been discussed about changing it out in thast few weeks - and I happen to locate my missing 13mm socket :rotfl2: ->

It has been on there since June/July of last year! Thought I would share :rotf:

I had a socket stuck to a hose clamp on my fuel filter for over a year. As far as I know, it's still on the clamp, but not on the truck since the clamp has been replaced. Luckily it was a cheapo socket and not one of my Craftsman ones.

 

It's astounding that yours is still there. Were you able to get it off without much difficulty?

When I tore down my current XJ, I found a socket on the bolt for the clutch master cyl... Then I found a couple more in various places when I took the interior out.

 

 

My chevy pile... I filled a whole popcorn bucket with random tools I found while working on it. There was a ton of stuff in the engine bay, under the seats, in the bed under the garbage it came with, etc.

There's still a 15mm socket in my 88's frame. Lost it trying to undo the upper arm bolts. I doubt I'll ever see it again. :( Maybe if I roll the truck over it'll come out. :idea:

Actually, I have that problem too. I'm pretty sure it got wedged in there well enough that, short of cutting things apart, I won't be seeing it again. Maybe a violent roll-over would release it though.

My 15mm socket fell into the frame of my truck while doing the UCA's yesterday. fortunately there is a tiny little hole just past the LCA mount that when I peeked through, I saw the socket. Then I was able to shove a magnetic pickup through the UCA access hole and grab it. :banana:

 

EDIT: Pete if your 15mm has been in there awhile try getting up to speed and slamming on the brakes the get the socket to roll to the front of the frame, then grab it with a pick up tool!

That particular truck can't stop fast enough to move a bowling ball around in the bed. :shake:

 

But it's pointless by now. It's likely become a permanent part of the truck through the process of rust-osmosis. :teehee:

I ran 85' 3.73 axles in one of my old XJ's (and had another set of the same kicking around), but if they were external Torx, I forget now.

 

I know the 87'-01's are 12 point 13mm's tho (since my MJ axle is an 87', and I just caniblized a knuckle from an 01')

While we were lifting the MJ yesterday, my buddy dropped a 15 mm socket into the frame rail. :shake:

 

A few years ago, I dropped a 15 mm deep socket in my XJ's frame rail. There was no way it was coming back out. So I nudged it over to the nearest hole and squeezed some silicone into the hole to keep the socket from rolling around.

 

About five years ago, I was doing some work on my 96 XJ before a trip to Moab. I was using a pair of vise grips for something and they fell down onto the lower edge of the front skid plate. I totally forgot about them until I was going up The Wall on Steel Bender.

 

The vise grips fell out onto the ground. The people around thought that I had broken something. Then someone went and picked up the vise grips. The vise grips sat loose on the front skid for the entire 500+ mile drive to Moab.

That's pretty funny. I don't have any tool stories, but on the subject of metal retrieval, I had a metal shard bounce off my nose and hit me in the eyeball, bypassing my safety glasses. I tried snagging it with a tissue, and tried flushing it and it wouldn't move. I was starting to panic, because I freak out when stuff touches my eyes (It's like what chewing tin foil does to some people). As a last ditch effort, before the ride to the hospital, I used my little telescoping magnet, watched myself in the mirror, and when it got about this | | far away from it, that little chip flew out of my eye and stuck to the magnet. It was the third happiest day in my life (I'm a husband and a father).

 

On edit-I pulled out onto the highway with a full craftsman socket set standard/metric with nut drivers of each variety, and wrenches sitting on the tonneu cover of my truck :wall:

i rarely have anyone work on my vehicles, but i had some work done on my audi years ago and the guy left a socket set and breaker bar in it. since it was snap on stuff, i brought it back to him. he filled my car with gas as a thank you.

 

i have found tons of tools around in vehicles i've bought. the best was on a non-running chevy pick up that was a parts vehicle. the guy had removed the parts he wanted before i bought it to totally part it out. the rug had to be trailered. when i got it off the trailer and in the driveway, a air impact wrench fell on the ground. a nice cp that looked nearly new. i have no idea where it was. when i started parting it, i found tools all over the place. i even found a sawzall behind the seat. i kept the stuff, but gave him a week to call me to say he was missing it. he didn't so i still have the tools. best part, i paid $100 for the truck. :D

i had the same dropping of the 15mm in the frame deal. i just left it in there since i had 3 other sockets at the time. about 7 months later when i was pulling wood out of the back of the truck and putting it in the pile, i noticed a little shiny thing in the grass. it was the socket lol. i don't know when/how it came out, but it had surface rust on it. :clapping:

When I work on UCA bolts I use black tape to hold the socket on a 6" extension. :brows:

 

If I lose that there is a problem. :nuts:

 

A steep hill works good to get a socket rolling. :yes:

i used to work with a mechanic that left tools in customer's cars all the time. he'd pull a car out and park it, and 15 mins later he'd go up to the office sort of frantic asking if that car was still here.

 

most of the time he forgot till the car was gone, customers would some times bring tools back. we used to joke that he had tool boxes rolling all over town. :nuts:
