  1. Well it looks like I have to make a 950 mile drive down there on the 30th. Its a two day drive for me as I can't stay awake long enuf in one day to get there. Damn I hate driving through LA. I've been through there at 3 AM & I-5 is still crowded. My only hope is that it snows like a b-t--- on the 29th & 30th on Siskiyou Sumitt and around Mt Shasta. Then I can come up with a convincing reason for not going. I can see myself trying to get through that stuff with a set of 235-40-17" hwy tires. That would for sure turn the wifes caddy into an out of control toboggan.

  3. The AW4 is an electronically controlled transmission. Without wires your truck ain't gonna move properly . Electricity tells it to shift from gear to gear, up & down. It also locks & unlocks the TC. It works through an elect TCU (Trans Control Unit) in conjunction with a coupl other pieces of elect equip. I suggest you read up on the AW4, a lot of info is available on the net, before you start this swap.

  5. It sure sounds to me like its a problem in the switch down the steering column aways. When you turn the key all that does is move a connecting shaft/rod going to the elec switch itself. It possible when your backing the key out of the start position the switch, on down the column, is losing contact & cutting the elec flow. Out of curosity when the switch is in the run position are you getting electricity to things like the radio, fan blower, fuel guage etc.? :dunno:

  7. It's a 6 mm. But I couldn't find any so I used 1/4" bolt from local hardware. You might have to run a 1/4 bit through it to clean the hole up slightly and allow the bolt to slide through. Dip it in oil and tap it lightly. It's an easy enough task.

  9. Try this: http://www.teamcherokee.com/Weatherstrip/index.html Of that don't work, check J. C. Whitney.

  11. Buy an Echo with a 16" bar. Their easy on fuel & a 16" will whack a 32" diameter tree blocking your way. Or by an electric (they suck) with a long cord & pack a portable generator in your rig. Oh, and Echo's are really lightweight.

    Dinner?

Damn it, I've already been cut-off. Stop putting those jowl drooling, death tempting, temptations in front of me. Well maybe while the wife's shopping with her friends I'll---------& wash the skillet before she get's back. I hope she hasn't been counting the bacon strips & eggs.

  14. I'll usually tip 20% of bill. A lil more if weathers inclement, etc.. I also ask when it will be delivered and tell the person taking the order that if they can't ensure delivery on time don't send it as it will not be accepted if it's more than 10 minutes past their stated time. and please note on the order delivery will not be accepted after 7:17. Their usually here a few minutes before the deadline. I've had them knock for 10 minutes before. I wonder if they eat that stuff on the way back to the shop.
  15. This may have some bolts/screw sizes that will help someone. It all so lists torque for tightening. http://www.geocities.com/JeepI6Power/1989XJMJ.html

  17. Apnea is weird stuff. One of my brothers has it. He use to fall asleep when we were watching football and another brother & I would watch him hold his breath for several minutes & then gasp for a big breath of air. We used to bet on whether or not he was finally dead or if he would gasp for air again. After several years of this he had a heart attack during one of these episodes. He now wears the mask at night and just does fine. Oddly the brother I did the betting with who was a healthy as a horse & never had a really sick day in his life, had a stroke 8 days ago & dies. We never know do we!!!!!! I have apena myself & have used the mask for several years. Definetly a help in replenishing the ol oxygen. :D
  18. JeepcoMJ; Locking it in 2nd just gives you a couple more gear options. Like when coming down a long incline its serves as a slight compression brake, you don't have to ride your brakes as much/severe to decrease speed. It's great in town when you want more sustrained grunt like above 10 MPH or to cruise at lets say 15 - 30 MPH without the obnoxious roar of the engine or constant upshifting to 3rd. Or if you downshift to 1-2 & don't necessarily want it to slam into 1st gear when speed drops to 30-35 MPH. Or in 2 wd flip the switch & leave the light in 2nd gear in icy conditions witout spinning a wheel. Or leave the light under full throttle & I choose when to shift to 2nd gear & 3rd. I use it mostly going up hill to maintain RPM and advoid annoying locking & unlocking of TC. Like I said just a personal preference for more control.
  19. Reattached the wire to switch (mounted in unused clock space) for 2nd gear lock in on the AW4. Did a lousy quick job on initial installation. Pop always said "do it right the first time".. Also wiped the canada goose s--- off my back window. I'm right in their flight path to the lake.
  20. Yes, the clockwise & counter-clockwise play was in the shaft on the end as pic shows below: Image Not Found I could turn the shaft either direction a good 20 degrees before the pitman arm showed any movement. Hoping to disassemble the thing today to see whats going on in there. Then I'll start searching for that rebuild kit I seen on the net somewhere.
  21. Wildman thanks for the info. I have 2 cherokees avail to check the shafts on first before I hit the JY. One of them should be good I hope.
  22. On pag 64 of my 1989 comanche owners manual it states the curb weight: Base vehicle Long box short box 4x2 2955.2 / 2897.6 4x4 3129.9 / 3072.3 It doesnt' mention the diff in weights based on engine configuration (4cyl vs 6 cyl)
  23. Yes the slop is gone. However half the splines in the shaft ujoint are worn out so I'm looking to replace the whole shaft with ujoint. Thanks for the info on removing that shaft at the upper end.
  24. Sounds to me like he doesn't have a tube running from exhaust masnifold to air cleaner to direct warm air to carb. I can't count the cars I have bought that have had that tube thrown away for one reason or another. And every one of them in cold climate had the carbs ice up at temp 40 and lower to the the velocity of cold air being sucked in which lowered the air temp to below freezing. and blocked up the carb nozzels. As soon as the heat tube was installed again as oriiginally intended they never froze up. You probally using an aftermarket air filter system which SUCKs in the winter time at high altitudes.
  25. Tightening the sector shaft did nothing for the slop in the steering. It was worn out at the other end of the box. Actually the whole box is due for a rebuild. My experience has been that screwing with the sector shaft adjustment without a torque wrench is asking for trouble and leads to escalated wear-out of the box. Your only temp hiding your problem. I'm gonna take a shot a rebuilding the old one.
