Alternator/Battery Emergency!
big66440 replied to projectMANCHI's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Try jumping the starter next time its dead, not that hard and all you need is a screwdriver if it cranks fine when you jump it you have an issue somewhere else in the electrical circuit and you can rule out the alternator and battery for good. -
Very hot fuel ballast resistor!
big66440 replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
From what I understand about electrical A/C current will force itself through a load like plugging a 115V accessory to a 220V outlet will fry the accessory , since the fuel pump runs on D/C current it will only take the volts and amps that "it needs" to run even though there is 12+ volts and quite a few amps from the source, now that I think about it you are right by running the fuel pump with the resistor it will slow the pump down which in theory should last longer due to less stress. -
Very hot fuel ballast resistor!
big66440 replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Very true it is louder now than before but I know I'm not driving a luxury car by any means besides I can only hear it when I'm idling once I get moving the noise from the $&!^* vent windows and tail gate chattering drown it out, as far as making it last longer I guess it depends on who you ask my take on it is it's D/C current so the pump will only take what it needs, if it where A/C I could see the pump getting burned out much quicker with the increase of "juice" when you bypass the resistor. -

Looking for a bored renix throttle body
big66440 replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I also bought a bored renix TB from leigh, mine whistles to but like previously stated "you can work with it" it does it in a VERY narrow RPM range , I didnt notice a big difference until I made a cold air intake and installed the 4 hole injectors, I'm sure once I install my magnaflow muffler and 7120 head it'll really pay off to have the bigger throttle plate, in a nutshell I'd recommend it if your planning on other upgrades down the road. -
Correct replacement for Renix 4.0 Flexplate?
big66440 replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks eagle, mine has quite a few busted teeth and makes that loud screeching sound often so I want to get in there and get it fixed but don't want to spend all that time pulling the tranny for nothing. -
4.0 water pump: I know, just need a straight answer
big66440 replied to Rohls's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I've been running an Airtex AW3412 and it's been perfectly fine for my daily driver, don't know if you have any mods on yours or if you use your comanche for off road though.- 11 replies

Do you guys know of any solutions for that mess of wires with the fusible links on the passenger side inner fender right behind the battery? do you guys think they can be replaced with a fuse box? if any one has done it I would really appreciate pictures, that bird nest under my hood drives me crazy thanks. 89 comanche 4.0 2WD AW4

I don't have any pics (not that you'd need any :laughin: ) but stick a few strong magnets on your cherry picker, shop press, engine stand or any tool that has one of those steel handles so you can easily "stick" it in place and keep it from rolling around when you're working on something instead of trying to put it where it goes,,,, which for some reason NEVER seems to be in a convenient place.

I had the same problem last week with my comanche, I separated the terminals from the battery cables themselves and cut the cables a few inches to expose some new cable, cleaned the terminals and tightened them up really good, sprayed both connectors and my starter with WD40 (I started doing that after I washed my engine) and the problem hasn't been back.

Crusty Rubber Brake Lines
big66440 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yup, and the theory proves correct it made the pedal more progressive, I would assume the rubber lines are perfectly fine up to a certain PSI then they start to "expand" where as the steel braided ones keep a much more uniform shape through a much higher PSI, I was a bit biased at first also. -
I'm not sure if the HO uses the same pump as the renix models the HO fuel pump should be a lot more popular and easier to find.

Kickdown Cable adjustment question
big66440 replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yup that's exactly what I did,,,, guess Minuit is correct it probably doesn't come back to the same place all the time. -
I adjusted my kickdown cable a few months ago and just for kicks I wanted to double check this weekend I followed the procedures to the letter a few times just to verify the consistency but every time I would adjust it the plunger would stick out a different length, I tried lubing the crap out of the cable but still made no difference do you guys suggest a new cable? or if some of you can provide a measurement for how much the plunger sticks out I'd really appreciate it. 1989 Comanche 2WD 4.0/AW4 thanks.

Crusty Rubber Brake Lines
big66440 replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I beg to differ, I actually felt a difference on my comanche, my rubber lines weren't even that old either (less than 2 years old and just driven around town) and this was before I did the 95 XJ dual diaphragm upgrade Russel makes a kit (part number 694850) that will bolt right on I had already tossed out the load sensing valve so I'm not sure if it will work if you still have yours,,, now that I have both I can honestly say it stops on a DIME!!!! -
