Took the advice, pulled the carpet and found...
Exgrayxj replied to 87MJJeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
 Wow! If my floors looked that good I'd be in 7th heaven! On my 90, I have a leak at the top of the non sliding rear window, and another on the right side front, fills the footwell up , pretty sure it is coming thru the cowl area, had the cowl vent off and running water to check drains, found it WAS draining- into the footwell. My thought is that the fact you have carpet instead of the rubber mat has helped save your floors! -
 Got mine in Saturdays mail! Wore it the rest of the day. Thanks again! Jim

Wiggle, wobble, whatever!!
Exgrayxj replied to ParadiseMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:smart: Paradise, I fought this a couple times on my xj. First time, the hole in the bracket was wallowed out a little, so got another and track bar. All good for about a year, then it started again. Also, it seemed to have developed some wander that hadn't been there. Checked the bracket end of and sure enough, looseness. Tried to tighten it on the jeep, no luck. Took bar and bracket off in one unit, couldn't loosen or tighten it, because the taper wasn't tight. Chiseled the nut off, got another nut, pressed the taper into the bracket so it would hold tight to tighten the nut, and REALLY tightened it. Point is, I don't think there is enough room/leverage/access with the bracket on the jeep to get the tapered joint adequately tight. Removing the bracket is the easiest way to do the track bar change anyhoo. Two years later, same bar, no more problems. If it is the original, it probably needs changed, but take it apart first, check the joint . Removing the bracket was key for me. -
:shake: Sometime in the late '90s... so lets say late 40 years old...was driving truck and wife thought it was a good idea. Still have one, would get rid of land line if it weren't for the interweb. No text service, no online, pretty much just use it for long distance. Never come close to using my allotted 450 minutes. :wall: Danbyrambler, that is funny :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

 Awesome! My problems just got smaller! I hope. Thanks jimoshel. And yes the tray I speak of is the one inside the tank, tho my plastic tank guard is mia. Skid plate will be in the works later.

;) Actually, I think my pump is good, it's the other stuff, the rubber crap the pump sits in. Is the gauge/pump mount the same between the two? I know where there is a 4cyl truck. :wall: When I think of all the places I have been with rigs that don't have a "tray" makes me think it might not be all that necessary. ? If I get a new tank, it will have a tray, tho. Thanks Jim

:clapping: Yes! Jim, couple hundred years ago when I lived in Vermont, I have brazed up a number of tanks, using using the exhaust flush method. Only had one go boom, and that was only a mild one! Is the pump mount/gauge thing interchangeable between the 4.0 and the 4cyl? And the tank that BMX used is listed as without the tray. Why do they make them with and without? I have never seen a tray in other rigs, just wondering how important it is in the MJ? I AM correct in thinking the pumps are different between the 2 motors, right? Thanks for your help guys.

Tail light restoration
Exgrayxj replied to RockRodHooligan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Now, that is impressive! Looks like new. If my tails looked that good it would only make the rest of the truck look worse  -
 I agree with everything you have said, only problem is that the nearest place I know that has a MJ is upullnpay, near the airport, and that is a 4cyl, and they punch holes in the tanks to drain. I'm not opposed to getting a new tank, it's the other stuff that is the problem. To use the stock tank I need a good guage/mount. And rubber parts. Which in mine are junk. I am guessing it is the ethanol junk being forced on us that has caused things to go spongy. Was hoping to get some alternatives, what others have done in the same situation. AND, wondering about using the tank without the trough, does it cause problems on slopes/angles uncovering the pickup? BTW, save some machine shop money, drill the center of that broken stud, then use torch to burn/melt the remains out of the head. It won't melt the cast iron, and only requires a little thread clean up after.

I believe the reason for the core support swap is to allow for the different radiator mounting of the 4.0 radiator, due to engine length, not so sure about the hood? I think there are front crossmember problems also. My '89 XJ Wagoneer has a LT1 Camaro motor/trans in it, using a stock 4.0 position radiator, BUT, the LT1 doesn't have a belt driven water pump, so has a shorter front accessory drive. The length of the motor/pump may cause problems. There are those here who have dealt with this swap and a search might give you some clues as to what is needed. :dunno:

I have wondered about this myself, and I am sure others know the answer to this. The frame rails on the early Grands are set up to have the same locating points for the suspension, and appear similar to the xj/mj. My question is how do those mounts work or appear to work for this swap? They must not work or the guys doing the swap wouldn't be going to the trouble make their own. :dunno:

 OK guys, I need help. Here is a little background. New to me MJ. The gas tank on my all stock '90 4.0 short bed had been rusted thru and JB Welded before I got it, have no shield plastic or otherwise. Driveability problems, would run for about 1/2 hour or so, then engine would gradually lose power, die down. Pump gets progressively noisier longer it runs. Pulled the sender/pump mount unit, found strainer etc rusty colored, strainer hose clamped onto rubber at pump (sort of). Inside of tank is very rusty/flaky like. Also, the mount/sender where the steel line go thru appears that the lines are bent, maybe solder broken. No tapered rubber thing on return. Probably the biggest problem is that the rubber pump mount(?) is softened up to the point that it will not retain the new strainer. Sooo, I am looking to you for advice. 1. Is the rubber mount thing available anywhere? The tapered thing? 2. New tank, tray or not? 3. Some other tank? Have searched, but results seem to be for later HO conversions. Your ideas/solutions please. Need to get this thing running dependably.

Consider me in again! I think I have figured out how to pay this year... :hateputers:

 I recognized it immediately as a '90, looks just like mine, only red. Immediately. Don't see how you missed it. What is all that white stuff? Cold here too. 58 when I got up,only going to be 75 today. Maybe winter has started. :clapping:

:( Saw this and went to look at mine...never noticed it before, but left and right both have about 1/4" cracks showing above the rubber trim at the top...damn, I thought the seam below the window swelling with rust was my only problem in that area!

New aftermarket MJ Bumper!
Exgrayxj replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:shake: Aaah, the plot thickens... :peek: -
I live here in gods waiting room, you would think toyota only made prius. I drive truck here, and every time I come up on a line of slow moving traffic (35-45) I curse, because it seems that at the front of the line is...you guessed it, a Prius, probably trying to get the mpg meter over 50. I hate those ugly damn things! :fs2:

Are all MJ Laredos longbeds?
Exgrayxj replied to terrawombat's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes - and it's a longbed. Aaah! I have only seen the sig pic. I don't think I have ever personally seen one either. Around here, mostly sports. But I am constantly surprised at the number of MJs I see on the road, drive truck locally, usually see at least one a day, almost all 2wd short, some nice some near death. Pretty surprising for something not built for nearly 20 years...think about the last time you saw a '87-88 regal or grand prix or non SS monte carlo, and they built millions of them... -
