starts and runs but dies when driving
Exgrayxj replied to stamp's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I know you replaced the fuel pump, but did you replace the "sock" filter at the time? The fact that after it sits for a while, then runs is a sort of clue, after it runs for a while does the pump get noisier? Pump is having to work harder. Had a mini van did this, new sock and pump quiet after, current MJ same. You did change the gas filter, right? Good luck, seems to be lots of this going around right now! :shake: -
:hijack: "crate XJs" Tell me more. I love stuff like that.

I am using 15x8 Canyons on the MJ, with 30/9.50 currently, will move to 31 next. On my xj I have 15x8 Ravines, also with 30s. If I get a deal, Ravines are going on the MJ too. Everything clears nicely, on full lock the tire will rub the lower control arm, I just don't turn quite so sharp when that happens. Don't know if that is what you were asking tho. ;)

MPGs CTY-16 & HWY-14 this normal ? ! ?
Exgrayxj replied to AMC-MJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
;) Don't know if this has anything to do with your problem, but on mine the sock on the in tank fuel pump will clog after driving/running for 30 minutes or so, cuts power, and you would think less fuel would mean less gas used, right? Not so. Makes it struggle, mine used half a tank in 100 miles. Just a thought, this is the 2nd vehicle I have had this problem with, first was a minivan with a plastic tank, but the crud on the strainer was rusty looking, looked like rust to me. Replaced the sock, pump became quiet, and problem solved. Only another possibility. :wrench: -

Looks like it was blowing back onto the tank, much easier to tighten it than replace tank. Curse you and your clean rust free frame... I'm jealous. ;)

Not much help, here, but my XJ wagoneer has LT1 Chevy power, and has a non jeep cable, all done by the po. I believe it is some sort of GM cable, possibly from from the engine donor vehicle. Your best option may be take it with you, and visit the jy. It seems like the bulk of the used/junked MJs around here 4cyl, tho the xjs are 6cyl. Six cable might work, don't know.

On my xj waggy, it had an adjustable track bar, on the frame bracket end. I thought the po had made it up, and it appeared to have some looseness in it, so found the stud to be loose in the bracket. Couldn't tighten it on the jeep. Figured time for new bracket. Went to jy, found nice tight track bar, got bracket and all. BTW, this is the easiest/best way to replace the track bar, due to the access on the bracket end. After about a year, got looseness again. :wall: Found bracket end loose again. Took bracket/bar out, and found stud loose in bracket. This time decided to investigate. Found that when installed previously by the po, the stud hadn't been full seated in the bracket, stud still tight in bar. Had to chisel the nut to get it off, cleaned things up, found new castellated nut, and installed the bar end/bracket assy while off the Jeep. Now I know the thing is tight, and am thinking access causes these things to not be fully seated when installed while the bracket is on the jeep. Taking the bracket off is way easier than fighting to get to the cotter key and nut on the rig. Oh, and had some junk/good looking Goodyear wrangler 30x9.50s that werent helping, though I still run them.

rear axle bearing race help

:hijack: May not be your case, but my new to me 90 MJ has a problem with the strainer clogging, very quiet at startup, but after about 1/2 hour the strainer clogs and the pump gets VERY noisy. Eventually will starve the engine for fuel. Had a Dodge minivan did the same, would run great until had to work it a little, like uphill on the interstate. Rusty junk in the plastic fuel tank on that one, I didn't know that was why the pump was noisy, thought that was just normal. After replacing the tank sock, all quiet. If the pump is noisy, and runs this way for too long, could lead to pump failure. Keep in mind, the flow of gas thru the pump cools it, lubes (?) it, keeps it working. Don't know what the rusty junk was or what causes it in a plastic tank, but I had it and it caused my problem. My theory is it came with each fill up, and is a added benefit of the ethanol in our gas. Or I could have just been lucky enuf to have gotten a bad batch of gas. Gasoline storage tanks ARE steel.

A couple of lift/tire size questions.
Exgrayxj replied to Comanchefire's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just tried this Sunday, on my 90 MJ. Had a set of stock Jeep 15x7 aluminum wheels with 31/10.50s. MJ is all stock, no lift, nothing. Had 225/75s on it when I got it. Put the 31s on it, front and rear, no rub, no scrub, no pinch weld rub, nothing. Then put on a set of canyons (15x8) with 30/9.50s, still no rub or scrub. Will be looking for a new set of 31 to replace the 30s. and use the Canyons. Did have the Canyons and 30s on my XJ, same deal, no rub, except for lower arms at full lock, not a problem tho, just be a little careful. Never hurt the tires. MJ is a little higher, and will be getting some 1.5" wheel spacers for the rear, mostly for looks tho. :brows: And thinking about WJ lowers...not for tire clearance but for ride quality, the tire clearance is a bonus ;) -
Only for thought. I have a 89 XJ Wagoneer, with a 93 Camaro LT1 and 4l60. Didnt do the swap, and mounts were made, Novak is cleaner looking. This has been together for about 10 years, A/C works, fuel injection is there, everything works as if stock. Only thing not there as if new is cruise control. Runs great, will fry the tires, squawks them going into 3rd. 3.55s. Gas mileage is about the same as the 4.0 XJ I had before, maybe a little better. On a trip will pull 20-21, around town going to work 15-16. Way too much fun. Still 4wd. Still has dana 35, tho stories have me concerned. And it is getting noisy. Going on my third year with this rig. Bottom line is, tho, I would be just as happy with a 4.0, it is amazing fun to punch, surprises lots of people. And I have never run across another like it. That is worth something, and is why I bought it. Just bought a 90 MJ, 4.0 auto, and have no plans to repower, maybe just help it out a little.

Did something similiar on a 90 XJ. Eliminated most of the vacuum hoses, put a pcv valve in the rear hole, a twist in breather in the middle. My rear hose, (the one that takes the place of a pcv valve) was clogged, and making excessive pressure in the engine, pushing oil out where ever it could, rear main, etc. Just remember, there needs to be vacuum and a breather, and where the vacuum is needs to be restricted or baffled, or it will suck oil out of the motor. Check or Help, or Motormite(?) at the parts store vacuum is where care is needed. Some thought required, not hard to do tho.

rear axle bearing race help
Exgrayxj replied to comanche12's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you have access to a welder, run a bead of weld on the race. The race will nearly fall out, the weld will cause the race to shrink. -
mj weird over heating please look
Exgrayxj replied to KCsurfer420's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had somewhat the same problems with my XJ. Engine swap, LT1 chevy, had no heat and radiator still cool though engine over heated. Have you bled the air out of the system? Air pockets will stop flow. Also possible belt is run wrong through pulleys, pump turning wrong direction? I am an old mopar guy, these XJ/MJs are a new animal to me too. Good luck. :peek: -
By loose what do you mean? Wandering going down the road? Or slop in the steering, even at stop? Track bar loose will make it wander going down the road. A lot. Got so bad I was afraid to drive on the weekends for fear of DUI stop. Steering box has some adjustment for wear, excessive slop. Maybe need someone to wobble steering wheel, while watching steering linkage. My track bar has needed replaced twice in two years, loose at frame bracket end both times. And, don't bother trying to rebuild one, plenty of good used ones fit. ZJ box is in my future.

Build date 10/89 white Sport, sb,6 auto/column, a/c, grey vinyl bench, 4wd. 3.55s :clapping: Pretty basic, no guages, gray sport stripe, turbine style wheels. Radio and tailgate missing, pretty solid, dirty, been sitting, skips, need lots of tinkering. :(
