Yup have 1 ('90), 2 ('89), & 3 ('88) and room for 6 more (not physically however), I didn't get the urge for this nomenclature until I got #2 :jump:

I assumed it was a "stop" block for the steering box so it couldn't move forward but that's just a guess.

Both my '88 and '90 manual trans MJs do not have any sort of NSS. If you try to start them in gear without the clutch depressed, they lunge foreward. :doh:

How can it be the thermostat? Even if the thermostat was stuck open, after 30 miles at 50 MPH in 45°F weather (not very cold) I would imagine the temp would be up at the 210°F operating temperature. On a related note: Will a temp sensor for an '88 yield accurate temperature if it's feeding a gauge out of an '86?

There is another screw that holds the front air deflector in place that I had to remove in order to remove that steering box "stop" block.

This is correct, I pulled some brackets/hooks from an XJ and the tow hook bracket was welded to the bumper bracket. See this post for pictures, disregard the "mystery" brackets. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12548

Bandimere Speedway (Colorado) elevation is 5860 feet, that's why the NHRA event is called the MOPAR Mile-High Nationals (even though it's more than a mile). That's tough on horsepower.
