I contacted the seller, asked about the "engine runs but needs work" and about the interior since there are no interior pictures. I received the following: "Interior is pretty good and it is rust free. "I rebuilt the engine 2 years ago bc it was smoking like it wasn't burning fuel good enough. Thinkin' it was tired, I replaced literally everything. It is wet sleeve so I replaced the pistons, rings, & cylinders as a set. Everything to do it is online since that engine was installed in a number of vehicles in Europe including Jeep Cherokees there. "New copper core radiator. Remanufactured turbo. Clutch kit complete with slave cylinder. Professional rebuild of the fuel pump & injectors (Spokane Pump). Rebuilt alternator...List goes on. "Started it and it ran exactly as before. And then it leaked coolant from somewhere. I tightened the various hose clamps. Still couldn't find the leak. Figuring it might be the newly installed head gasket, I bought a new one and was going to do that over but instead concentrated on the smoking and hard starting. Figuring it was old fuel, I installed a brand new fuel tank! New fuel... same problem."

I'll be in Coeur d'Alene at the beginning of August for work. Hmm...

So basically it's a preference thing. Which is fine, was just wondering.

Sounds like you just need to cap the intake manifold in two places and cap the vacuum lines. You can buy EGR delete kits or just do it yourself like we did. You can see what we did here:
-
We are grateful that @eaglescout526 gave us a pair of these a few years ago. They are on our Comanche. Seems that you guys prefer these over the plastic rain guards (link)? Curious why.

Those were the old motor mounts that I took off. They would have looked the same when new. Our record for replacing one was about 20 minutes. If the O-rings on the oil filter housing were original, then I'm sure they were leaking. That's another repair that all of our old Jeeps need if original. The rubber O-rings don't last 30-40 years.
-
It's been a few years since we've done this, but I'm sure we put the bolt back in the other direction. We may have had to cut the bolt so that it didn't hit the oil filter. Like I say, it's been a few years. It's been our experience that the motor mounts do need to be replaced periodically. The rubber gets brittle and breaks after a while. Just replaced the motor mounts on our newly acquired '97 a couple weekends ago. This is what I took out:
-
Did you put the motor mount bolt back through the other direction so you don't have to do that again next time?
-
Yes, like that. And they do wear out so need to check them from time to time. We've installed poly motor mounts before, but if you want to stay OEM, you can get stock motor mounts at any parts store.

1979 Datsun 510 hatchback. 2.0L, I4 RWD, 5 speed. No AC in Phoenix... It was "grapefruit" yellow, but otherwise looked like the photo below. For a while I had the wiper hose pointed forward out of the grille and could spray people, which wasn't necessarily unwanted in the heat of a Phoenix summer... In hindsight, it was a fun around town car.

We had our MJ windshield replaced at Safelite. I asked them to use the 97+ rubber gasket and they were happy to install that instead of messing with the aluminum trim. I highly recommend this upgrade. Cost was ~$180 a couple years back, probably more now. As far as mirror, the MJ mirror fit. Even if yours doesn't it's pretty easy to get a replacement from a junkyard or Amazon.

Maybe someone knows XJ Question
JZLAJeep replied to Drahcir495's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I concur, the interior pieces should be the same. -
The Junk Yard. Our Comanche isn't the nicest and we didn't pay a lot for it, so we have a rule, the parts can't cost more than the vehicle. Recently had a fuel injector go bad so we pulled some out of a Renix XJ in the junk yard and chuckled when we found they were Ford injectors. So ours is presumably the 3rd vehicle (Mustang/Crown Vic. etc. XJ, our MJ) those injectors have been in. But if you want something not used, take a look at the sources I went to in the link below.

First time removing a transmission
JZLAJeep replied to jodawill's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
This is a good heads up. We didn't know these were E-torx (thought it was just hex) and rounded the head off. That was 'fun.' Replace the bolts with hex heads when you put them back. Also make sure you unplug the CPS and make sure the plug is not snagged on anything in the engine bay... With this said, removing the oil pan is A LOT easier when the transmission is out... -
2 Wheel Drive Transmission

Get them both! -
Had a relapse. Still feeding the addiction... After selling the blue automatic above, the Mrs. mentioned how she didn't drive the Jeeps because she doesn't particularly like driving stick around town and that I had sold the automatic we did have to a neighbor. My ears perked up at this and understood that I had tacit permission to buy another one. Found a '97 2wd automatic. Basically the opposite of the features I normally look for (manual, 4x4), but Uncle Tony's Garage convinced me to give the 2wd a try again (owned one from '06-'09). This is intended to be the around town, mom Jeep after all. Country trim (which is nice), extremely clean interior, 181K miles on the 4.0L, some blemishes on the exterior, but not bad for 29 years old. The Mrs. likes it! Back to needing to sell 1-2 Jeeps... Already ordered the 12x7 USA flag magnet that's going over the clear coat blemish on the tailgate. America! 2 of the tires on it were garbage so swapped them out with some old ones I had in the family "tire shop." The spoke wheels look good on it and the old tires will be good enough for around town for now. While changing the tires, I noticed that the bump stops were... kinda not there anymore. That's the biggest issue so far. In other news, I'm not particularly thrilled with what the neighbors have done to "my" previously owned blue Cherokee. But the good news is I get the stuff they take off. I'm going to put the front fender flares on the Comanche.

'88 Eliminator... Feb. 2009 - June 2026

Just the axles and springs in the bed made it ride that low? Wow! -
Those are pretty small tires. We usually run 235/75/15 on MJ and XJ. I can't imagine you'll see any difference with 215/70/15 over 205/70/15. You can likely go larger without real noticeable difference in performance. Given how little you drive it, I'd look for used tires. Can find used tires for 1/3 the price of new. I've gone to buying used tires for all of my vehicles... When shopping for used, it's likely easier to find 235/75/15 used than 215/70/15 or 205/70/15, but keep your eye out for any 4 matching 15" tires...

Looks like it grew fender flares when you painted it. Good looking Comanche!

MayDay!! - Hard Accel Killed Idle

Got ya. It's been a minute since we did this delete, but I guess you could leave the EGR tube. Found this diagram in an earlier post. -

We took it all off. We didn't use a "kit" we just made our own. -
Guess I hadn't realized the Renix and HO exhaust manifolds were so different, but now that you mention it...

86 / Old Style Wiper Arm Removal
JZLAJeep replied to aris_garage_builds's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Those look the same as the rear wiper on an 84-96 XJ. Yes, a pain indeed. I've had those tabs come off and the wiper arm seems to stay on fine with the spline friction. You'll like the '97+ XJ wiper arms better.
