So...4wd vac system
eaglescout526 replied to eaglescout526's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I can safely say it’s faux selec-trac haha. I am glad I do not have much to worry about at all. It’s pretty neat actually. It’s literally a switch that sends vacuum to one line or the other. Rudimentary but it worked on the NP228/9 which I sadly couldn’t use. But I have mine set up and it’s working to where vacuum just either vents on 2wd or it goes to the actuator on the axle to shift. But I understand all the definitions better. Thanks guys for the input! -
I appreciate your guys input. It just seems to me the market has limited choices. So I think what I am gonna do is get a better pan, dump my used oil in a bottle like a cranberry juice or gallon milk bottle as I drink both pretty often and take it to O'reillys and have them dump it.

No. I am not doing away with it. HOWEVER! I am going a different route. Probably one not seen or talked about as it sounds crazy. Selec-trac, with a command-trac case, but the selec-trac vac switch controls the front axle shifting. Crazy? Brilliant? I guess what I am after is some opinions. As it stands I can have a selectable drive via the vacuum actuated system, but I can have 2wd low. Am I going to run into any issues with this set up? Am I gonna lose an NP207? or a front axle? Or a whole drive train? 4wd is still very new to me but not complex to where I can not understand what all is going on. Granted if I absolutely need to, 2wd operation on the 207 is still available. Let me know what you guys think.

I can only see it being an failure if its not well maintained or their putting what they shouldnt be in the cooling system. I guess in your situation, I wouldnt knock it just yet.
-
Really? Hmmmm.
-
The only way I see this happening is if something really acidic inside ate away at the coolant passage in the manifold to do this. A failure really unheard of for either engine really. And the aluminum manifold is a great heat sink so bypassing the manifold may or may not cause an overheating situation. Not sure as I have never heard of anyone doing this. Could also have a rusted out headgasket on the 86 letting coolant into the combustion chamber.

One of the last ones I provided a build sheet for. Those were the days.

$400 LWB in FL

84 MJ. That’s a new one. -
Ok. The only reason why I say this is once a year, every summer, ever since I cleaned it out in 2017-18, I’ll have an issue where she will run funny and the O2 circuit is the cause of her running funny till about 15 min of driving and it’ll clear up. So I’ll spend about an hour with some electrical contact cleaner and spray the hell out of both ends liberally until it’s clean or I’m satisfied with it and give her a start and see if my issue clears. I honestly think with how hot it gets out here, the stuff in the C101 is getting liquified and messing with the connection.

I am not a fan of 97-01 swaps, but I am enjoying what you’re doing to the newer interior to make it match an older color. -

Factory front tow hooks
eaglescout526 replied to Eagle_SX4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah it doesnt, even my 88 parts catalog does not show the special nut. I do not off the top of my head. I can go see and study it but it should be the same as the bolt unless you werent able to get it off with the special nut. -

Fun fact, that is the 84-86 diagram which does not show the special nut sleeve that slides into the frame, but you are correct. The sleeve should slide in from the inside and the bracket is bolted down from the outside. My 84 does not have the provision at all for this hole. I think I still have mine somewhere. -

I have those same tabs on my XJ. Funny enough, they were with the hooks I found at my grandparents house which incidentally enough were the same Warn hooks Jeep used. -

On my MJ it is the same as fiats. Heres what you can do, get a nut and thread a bolt then put the support on the hook. If that will make it easy. -

I can take a look. I installed hooks on both. -

Couple things. One. Finally got the exhaust down pipe!!! Went to go put it in, got it bolted to the manifold, looked at the other end. Aaaannnnnd it’s too long. Ain’t that interesting. I for the life of me can not figure out why. Now my 88 parts book says 4cyl is the same regardless of the 4wd or not along with XJ or MJ. Fits both. Well no big deal, I’ll cut it, expand the pipe and slide the cut end in and weld it once I have it fitted to where I need it to be. I’m still trying to figure out how this is an issue unless I ended up with a 4.0L pipe which I highly doubt but everything should be the same unless AMC changed the frame and the mounts on the XJ after 86 which I am not aware of such happening. -

Right. But are any of them new? Sounds like the trans mount is new. -
