Gauge Cluster
eaglescout526 replied to BeaterComanche86's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Unfortunately you won't be able to swap anything since your 86 cluster is idiot lights and the other is from an H.O. XJ. The idiot light cluster has no way for it to house the gauge versions due to the light sockets. You will need a Renix era gauge cluster. I had the same thought when I had my idiot light cluster. -
check the turn signal flasher/relay? It should be one of two round relays on the fuse panel

Hey Pete, I don't know if you are a star wars fan or not but I have seen a license plate on an XJ that said XJ JEDI and I think MJ SITH is a great response to that.
-
I agree with Ohm on the front plate. I have the AMC flag with Jeep next to it as my front plate.

Heh. The slight benefit to working at a dealer. An internet search will not tell you that.

There are seven dealers in the U.S. that still have that antique. I may have to order one now

But finding them is like finding an auto 2.5L MJ

Did or have you replaced the center bearing that sits in the middle of the fly wheel? -
Broken TBI screw(solved)
eaglescout526 replied to eaglescout526's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well is been a month since I asked about this. I decided the Dremel route and honestly that is a lot better of an idea than the drill bit without sacrificing too much metal of the body. I swapped T-bodies anyways and the old one just sat on the back burner for a while. But here it is only a drill attempt and cut off wheel damage: Could be worse. Did not have to tap for a size up, and it's hidden by the retainer. -

That’s the ECU. The brain of your truck. -
Turbo boost. Possibly electronic controlled. I liked how the whole dash bezel was red with the silver trim.

Rebuilt throttle body yesterday. Recieved some drip moldings from Will and now Little Red does not look odd without the drivers side I did not know that the drip rail was so screwed up that getting this molding on was a pain in the butt! Cruise control is ready to go and will be a next weekend install along with a fuel line to replace a flare nut that is chewed up at the TB.

86 Cluster to Renix Gauge Cluster
eaglescout526 replied to Isaiah Hahn's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You actually would not need to splice anything to make the new cluster work. All the clusters from 84-90 use the same style plug to plug into the harness. For the sending units you will need the ones for gauges, oil pressure and temp. Unless your old one is idiot lights, you should not have to swap sending units. For the tach, as long as the Renix cluster came out of a 4.0L it should see the 2.8L pulses just fine and won't have to make any adjustments to the tach. One problem: If your truck is an 86 you will need to swap the speedometer cable to the newer 87-90 style. -
I’m gonna take a stab and say the starter relay if that has never been replaced.

86 MJ No Spark

I put some thought into it and I think that plug is for the oil pressure switch or sensor. -

That green wire needs to go to the starter relay. Does the relay have an open spade? -

eaglescout526 replied to JustaValiantguy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Does the wire have a flat connector and is a red wire? If so that for the optional under hood light. It does not plug into that spade on the coil. Don't know what that's for. For no spark / start I would check the Crankshaft Position Sensor on top of the transmission bell housing on the drivers side. See if the sensor is dirty and putting out the right voltage. -
Like the title says, I am in search of a drivers side drip rail molding. For whatever reason mine is missing from my truck prior to my owner ship and I'm curious if anyone happens to have one to sell. Does not matter if it is black or chrome.

Battery tray Question
eaglescout526 replied to Articul8's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Dang. Well, snapping it off or putting a good liquid rust remover like vinegar is all I got left for ideas.
