Changing my MJ to a GM computer sys.
eaglescout526 replied to Thorwon's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Where did you find this? If you don’t mind me asking. All we know is that the 86’s with the 2.8L can be swapped around to the 3.4L and have possible fuel injection along with a carb with little to no modifications. But as for an AMC 4.0L running on a GM ECU seems a little blasphemous. -
Mean to quote one of the bay pics? Otherwise it’s pretty easy to make the 2.5L bay nice and clean with all the room. Just takes a bit of time and some historic pictures and anal detail. That being said, she is putting up a bit right now. Steering is a bit wonky, ball joints look to have failed me as the tires up front went damn near bald and the connector for the CPS is giving me some odd drivability issues.

The Jeep homestead

Holy crap what a rollercoaster it has been. So I’ve been doing fine in terms of money, turns out my auto draft water bill didn’t come out. Whoops so I paid that along with this months. Power cost went down drastically since converting the fluorescent lights to LED. The girlfriend dragged me to Disneyland, ugh. Haven’t been since ‘09 but a lot has changed but I’m not gonna go into it other than I did actually enjoy smugglers run and there’s a whole other reason why we made the trek out to commiefornia for Disneyland but I’ll leave it at that. Anyways came back from an expensive trip, paid some bills, living a bit broke, nothin new with the house other than the solar panels finally got activated after being installed for a month. I guess there was and issue with the permits and what not so it took a month to sort that stuff out. But other than that I’ve been watching the system and it’s kinda like taking candy from a baby. Not sure what the payout is but ill be watching my power bill closely. -
Cluster swap from '96 to '91
eaglescout526 replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
This looks like the same issue I had with the 84-86 clusters. I just ended up swapping the cylinders around to the speedometer I wanted. -
I am overheating and I need it fixed yesterday
eaglescout526 replied to Jesse J's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I say ya yank the belt off and check the pump pulley for any play. Have you replaced it recently? Did you get the right direction pump? The aftermarket sells two styles of water pumps that flows either direction. I know this as I accidentally ordered the wrong direction drive pump once and it would over heat and blow coolant everywhere real quick. -

eaglescout526 replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The older ones don’t seem to have that stop. I think that’s to stop it from spinning backwards as the Renix ones do run backwards when in reverse. -

eaglescout526 replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I’ll give it a shot. I took two 84-86 speedos apart but haven’t tested their accuracy yet. The center has a natural return position which as long as you leave the needle there and put it back, it should remain the same. -
Would any of you use these leaf springs?
eaglescout526 replied to rokinn's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No. I wouldn’t even risk running those unless I was desperately short on cash and needed my daily back up in a short time. I found a hairline fracture in my main leaf on my original passenger side leaf spring. -
Horn Contact Repair Kit
eaglescout526 replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No problem! Oh while you’re in there, clean up the button contact on the turn signal switch itself. That makes a world of a difference when it’s dirty or clean. -

eaglescout526 replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Renix years seem to be the only one with a modifiable speedo but I’m sure you could pull the speedo face off with the needle and swap needles around. I can take my parts cluster this evening and confirm this if you would like. -
Horn Contact Repair Kit
eaglescout526 replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I went with that exact repair kit. It works fine. I am not sure if it’s meant for the Jeep steering wheel but it works as it should. You’ll need to install the spring first, then the spacer on the contact shaft, then the shaft into the spring. -
Should I go for smaller tires?
eaglescout526 replied to elliot's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I moved your post to the tech so others will see and chime in. -

eaglescout526 replied to acfortier's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don’t see why not. Be odd if Chrysler did that. Just the Renix and HO years are what we know to be different except for the temp, oil and volt gauge are the same. Tach might be too. I have a HO full cluster if you ever need more parts. Can’t confirm the year -

I don't see why it wouldn’t work at all. Should be a direct plug n play honestly. -

I mean I already have an original NOS set, usually I am the first to hear about his projects. Hopefully once these are set and ready, I will see those headlamp relay stickers I made last year. I wonder why he took these on first and didnt finish the body molding project.
-
I saw that too. I am surprised I didnt hear about it first from him directly.
-
That would make it an 86. Double check the one on either the front radiator support(86 only) or the firewall(87-92) to see if the VIN matches. It is possible someone swapped dashes around and not the VIN plate for the dash.
-
So what’s the last 8? The last 8 can tell us the model year. As for AMC, AMC owned Jeep from 1970-1988. 86 is a weird year but some are labeled as AMC and others as a Jeep but it’s still a Jeep. So no need to be concerned there. Feel free to gander the registry as well. GT is 86 HT is 87 JT is 88

Yes, some people want to do away with it in favor of the metal one just because the bottle is plastic and 4.0L guys can use it as an upgrade and move away from the closed system.
