Half tech, half MJ, couple questions on XJ
whowey replied to beaterjeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Very doubtful that it was carbon build-up in the cylinders. Fuel injection has almost done away with that problem. Most carburetors ran rich which contributed to the problem. We know that Renix injections tend to run lean. I would guess there was some critters in the exhaust somewhere. Usually fuel related sputtering doesn't clear up with a backfire. It usually will just go away as you run more clean fuel through it. Seafoam should go into the line to the brake booster. Pull it off on the booster end.. and just dribble it in as the engine runs. You don't want enough going in to choke out the motor.. but it will sputter some and be prepared for large, LARGE quantities of nasty smelling smoke. -
Here is the one on my XJ.. You VERY quickly learn to keep it out of the trees.

Yup.. I've had my license for about 15 years or so... Wade 2... they dropped the code requirement for any license about 2 years ago now. I would have thought you got yours later than that with a KB call though. I got my ticket in 95, and I have a KB call.

I have the HF model... It works okay for certain tires, but for some it really struggles. Rims like aluminum Jeep 10-holes won't even go into it, as the center hole is far too small. and larger-ish tires like 33 x 12.5's are kinda too big for it unless you permanently mount it to the ground. But for trailer tires and most stock sizes it works pretty well... It is hard to beat Wal-Mart for $11 per tire.

Good to hear some progress is being made on your fleet....

The real moral of the story with this thread...... Keep me away from the keyboard when under the influence of flu medicine... I have absolutely no idea what the heck I even meant in the beginning....

U-haul wouldn't even rent a dolly to the OP. If you went in and told them what you are doing.. they would tell you the truck doesn't have enough weight or size to control the dolly and van.

There are a couple of guys from NAXJA that are in your area. I don't know if they are on here. If you really need some local help, you might want to head over there and check out the So Cal chapter.

Gladiator grill/hood on an MJ?
whowey replied to Philistine's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not that one.... this grill I don't know where you could shrink it enough to make it fit.. unless you custom fabbed all the parts. But it would look sweet if someone did. -
http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/pts/1464403855.html ALMOST everything you need.... Just need a few more parts to swap it on... ;)

Very cool.... If I can ever manage to get myself layed off.. I think thats what I want to go to school to be retrained in. The ability to take a chunk of bare metal and turn it into something useful is really awesome.

Are you referring to the editors of 4 Wheel and Off Road? Have you actually read any of the articles? They do almost nothing but praise the parks. :hmm: Willy Sorry... forgot about this thread... But yes I was there when the UA came to Cliff's Insane Terrain several years back. It was one large herd of rock pirates whining about how muddy everything was. It was quite wet that summer and the entire park was soaked. They were completely unequipped for the terrain and managed to do only a couple of trails the entire day. The participants complained during the day about the conditions and the noticeable lack of rocks. The article in the magazine and the e-content were not terribly positive towards the park... -
That is true Wisconsin right there....

I'm also going to go down in the category of people you don't want to hear from. I have 4 kids... a 13 year old, a 8 year old and a 2 year old twins. I check the grades of my older kids every week. They are expected to have grades that are equivalent to their respective abilities. My teen has been on the Honor roll since she started receiving grades and therefore is expected to continue that. My 8 year old has had some challenges since he started school and his grades are expected to show his continued work on those issues. These goals are non-negotiable. Our teachers are slow updating grades also... It has lead to some rough discussions on Friday evenings. And some discipline because of those posted grades. Two reasons for this rules. First.. my wife and I were polar opposites in school..I put for virtually no effort in school and I graduated on the high honor roll with a National Honor Society membership. My wife tried VERY hard, but was not successful. Her parents did not give a darn what she did as long as she wasn't drug home by the police or the truant officers. She struggled mightily with no support from anyone and barely graduated. We don't want our children to go through these types of struggles. Second, (and you are going to HATE this) as a young-in you need boundaries, restrictions, limits and expectations on your behavior, actions and the way you lead your life. As parents we only get a handful of years to get you in shape, trained, educated and ready to deal with the reality that the world really sucks. We have alot of things to teach you and such a short time to do it, we need to take drastic measures at times. Sometimes when things don't go right, the situation escalates a little too much.

Conventional oil VS Full synthetic
whowey replied to pilotblake's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was mainly interested in the reasoning behind your specific interest in the ACEA ratings. Oils that meet them, or even advertise that they do are fairly rare in the US. Our politcal situation makes most oils unable to meet the equivalent ACEA rating. And please question anything I might post that doesn't look right. If I had a nickel for everytime I posted something incorrect.. I would be retired some where with little government involvement and lots of sunshine. As mentioned above, the ZDDP found in most oils that are intended to protect the flat tappet cams can also harm the catalytic converters in our modern engines, assuming it burns some oil. It is my understanding that the API-SG/SJ oils were causing many flat tappet cam failures in the 80s because the engines were being reworked, running hotter, and smog was thrown in. API-SL oil came out and contained the ZDDP because it was a way to make a cheaper oil suitable for the newer engine demands. That is what is still around today for the most part. I have to a take a bit of umbrage here with you and the good doctor.... ZDDP or Zinc dithiophosphates is the compound that is used by the oil companies to get Zinc and to a lesser extent Phosphorous into their oil blends. Two of the advantages of using ZDDP to get the Zinc is that ZDDP is easily soluble and fairly low cost. One of the disadvantages is that ZDDP will readily give up its Phosphorous when exposed to combustion temps. When the EPA mandated a decrease in Phosphorous output from automotive sources the API created the SM specification. That particular specification only allows 800 parts per million of Phosphorous.. but there isn't any limit on Zinc. Zinc was never the issue, just the Phosphorous. ACEA oils contain Zinc and Phosphorous, Here is a oil analysis from a ACEA rated oil... http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub ... ost1491262 You can see for yourself the Zinc and Phosphorous levels in it. So somehow they are getting in the oil. Does that mean its absolutely ZDDP? No, but the two important elements are in there. I am trying to find the related articles with an engine designer stating that the lowest level of Zinc should be 1000ppm in flat tappet camshaft motors. The VOA I found for Syntec showed the Zinc level at 966ppm.. but I cannot find it again at this moment. Probably as soon as I hit submit I will find it. -
7.4 pints 2 pints to a quart 4 quarts to a gallon.. So just over half a pint less than a gallon...
