  1. The 242 is a direct replacement for the 231, everything is the same size. The differences in spline counts and shaft lengths are for the tcase input, so between the trans and tcase. Yours are already together so you'll be good to go. The front driveshaft from the XJ will be the right length already, you'll need a custom length rear driveshaft, but the same length as a 231 swap. Everything should be the same really as a 231 swap except the 242 didn't have the CAD. So no dealing with the vacuum bs there. And I guess the shifter bezel is different too. One thing you should watch for though is I'm pretty sure the towing package came with deeper gears than the regular combos, so you'll want to watch that. Although you might also want to swap in the rear axle anyhow because the towing package would've come with a Dana 44 rear axle. But even with the 242 you'll want your gear ratios to match.
  2. I've got the track bar and frame bracket from an '86 sitting in my shed, bolted to the axle. Plan was to swap it all into my '91, I just don't know when that's happening yet, still need to finish rounding up parts for it. But if I can figure out a way to measure and compare them I'll try to do it while things are apart. But at the rate I get to things it might be a few months or longer.
  3. Yeah, I can see that now. I was thinking the whole panel looked a little plain. Too bad.
  4. There is a company out there that was manufacturing bed side panels. http://stores.zmjeeps.com/bed-side-mj-comanche/ I can't speak to how it fits or anything, I'm just aware it exists. It doesn't look like it would replace much more than the exterior skin, though, if you need any of the inner wheel well fixed as well. And I think they're longbed, and while they should still work for cutting patch panels put on a shortbed, cutting and trimming them down for a full panel replacement on a short bed may not be as easy as they claim. And they're not entirely cheap, either, especially after factoring in freight.
  5. Am I right in thinking that's galvanized pipe? Good lord.
  6. That may just be a Nissan thing... The 2015 Micra I drove for work a few years ago has one too, and it sure as hell wasn't going to be pulling trailers.
  7. 2871W at 12V is only 230A. That's only a little bit more than a starter motor. Should be fine. Lol. Enjoy that portable sun.
  8. Don't know what all the fuss is about. Its just a van.
  9. I have an MJ with roughly that many miles. If I can get my $#!& together in the next month or so I'm about to drop $2000 to put new steel into the rockers and cab corners. Sure things are worn out... But try replacing it for that money? Ain't gonna happen. Yeah some stuff happened after I bought it with high miles, but you sort out what's worn out and keep going. After working through my issues the only thing I'm afraid to do is body work. I'd just as soon so it right the first time (it's been done once by a previous owner and that worked out so well...). I wouldn't say I'd kill for a rust-free MJ... But at that price...
  10. Really not sure what point you're trying to make there... Also, Unchained Melodies has got to be the most clichéed sappy song ever. And if any of you ever use it you should be ashamed. Unless it was this recording: But yes, the initial video was just a teaser. Hopefully they come out showing more detail on things. I'm particularly interested in the supercharger setup... Project that's still a loooong way off.
  11. The MJ's a ton longer than an XJ, especially the LWB. So that's why lifts look less huge. The height/length ratio doesn't change as quickly. I can't really comment on lifts myself. I'm slowly working towards 2~3" for mine. And I mean slooowly. You can check the build threads for other trucks to see what other people are doing to acheive your desired end product. There's also a couple lift/tire size threads with pictures kicking around. But the formula for calculating what lift you get from an SOA is: height of old perches under axle + axle tube (or if you're changing axles, [old diameter + new diameter]/2 ) + new perch height. Usually it works out to ~5.5", but this will change depending on the axle used, and the height of the new perches. I think the XJ shackle is only good for 1/2" drop. But maybe I'm wrong. I stumbled across a thread a while back where someone was talking about using Grand Waggy springs, which are flatter, to decrease the height of his SOA.
  12. Are you sure you've got the right bulb in the socket? Should be a 2057 for the front one below the headlight. The side one should be a 194. Check the grounds for both as well.
  13. You can get actual throttle body cleaner. Carb cleaner leaves lubricant behind but the throttle body cleaner dries clean, like brake cleaner, and is safe to run through the engine. The stuff I used this summer directed me to spray it in with the engine running. Your neighbours may hate you (you've got to open up the throttle to get behind the butterfly) but it's not as bad as Seafoam. As far a using the connector, well it does two things. One is locate the terminals so it'll plug into the switch properly. The other is to insulate the contacts, and prevent things from touching them. If you're satisfied it'll do those things it's probably good, but if you can get another easily enough you might want to go that route.
  14. How much do you think a manufacturer could save by not installing the stabilizer over an entire tire production run? $5 per vehicle? $10? The consumer won't notice but the manufacturer would save millions. If they didn't think it was needed they wouldn't have started putting them on, and they wouldn't continue. I'm curious though, have you noticed any tendencies towards wandering, increased steering feel, or any other effects from having removed the damper? Just wondering what else it might be doing.
  15. If you go too much spacer you'll push them into the fender liners. WJ control arms have a curve to accommodate larger tires.
  16. Dampers are legitimate engineering solutions to stopping vibrations. Sometimes it's the only way. AMC had one of the better engineering outfits in the late 70's and early 80's. They just had no capital to work with and some maybe not-so-great management. When Chrysler took over, you would've thought it was the other way around when you went into engineering. If AMC's engineers thought it needed a damper, I'll trust them. Almost anything can cause a vibration going down the road. If you don't have a damper in there, and the vibration in a wheel goes from up/down to left/right, it's going to start steering you back and forth unless something stops it. That's death wobble. If the vibration is bad enough (or the damper is worn out) it'll overwhelm the damper, sure. But just because the boards and plexiglass don't stop ALL the pucks from flying into the crowd doesn't mean they aren't useful.
  17. We can link to individual posts, yes? Yeah we can. Individual posts within a topic. It would be a huge undertaking to set up a single topic, but once a flowchart was established, it would be a fairly simplistic way of creating an interactive element to it within the existing infrastructure of this forum. It might be a little annoying to click through I suppose, and like a choose-your-own-adventure novel you definitely couldn't make sense out of the topic just by reading it linearly. But it would make it easy(ish) to add info to each process or decision point if something needed improved or corrected after everything went together.
  18. Check for codes I'll bet you'll get a 41. In my case it was bad battery cables. But that'll help you out on the check-engine light. You can use a voltmeter on the battery terminals to confirm the guage reading. My guess is your dash isn't grounded well, leading to it reading low. It's not uncommon for that to be a problem. But it can't hurt to check the fuses in the panel under the dash. Also you don't have a C101, that's Renix junk. Is yours a 91 or a 92?
  19. Insects? This time of year? I'd be more worried about the paint freezing before it sets... An elk hopping my fence and knocking it over, maybe, but the insects are loooooong gone. But I support the idea of a "things that work" forum. Don't buy this fuel pump it's garbage and won't fit properly, vs one that actually fits. That sort of thing.
  20. Breaking trails through 8-10" of fresh snow I've done 8mpg to a tank...
  21. I've got a sway bar from a junkyard ZJ in my MJ. It was pretty much identical in shape to my existing bar, although mine was bent badly. I pulled the bushings with it, and also grabbed some minty stock XJ end links while was there. I want to say it was an improvement but my judgement may be affected by the fact that I ran it for about a week with broken end links. My el-cheapo plastic callipers suggest it's 27mm... but I'll suggest – given their flexible nature – they are neither precise nor accurate. Pretty sure the ZJ it came from was a v8, but it was three or four years ago now so I won't comment on the precision or accuracy of my memory either. I wonder if some of the extra sizes are XJ rear bars that got tossed under the MJ listing by ignorance? I was under the impression there were only two XJ front bar sizes, a smaller one and then the 28mm for the taller Up Country.
  22. By chimes I assume you mean the door/seatbelt buzzer? It's a little black module that plugs into the fuse panel, IIRC. But unplugging it shouldn't affect wiper delays, etc. It almost seems like he just unplugged all the modules under the dash willy-nilly until something worked... And then didn't plug them back in again. Unplugging just the buzzer unit from the fuse panel by itself won't disable any of those features. I would know, mine's been u plugged since the first month I had it. My advise, beyond checking all your fuses, is to get under the dash and see if you can spot anything that looks unplugged. Looking at the circuit diagram, there's a 7.5A fuse in the panel that could maybe take out both the buzzer and cruise control, and possibly the headlight delay... but I suspect it would also take out some of the instrument cluster with it. Wiper module is flat and black, and has a plug on two sides. Mine came unplugged once on its own. Do you know for a fact yours was equipped with the headlight dealay? It's an option not all of them had.
  23. Couldn't tell you. It's definitely not mine. This is the link that was in my post as to where the pics are from:
  24. Someone recently made headlines in BC for thinking the ticket they got, $575, "just for tossing a cigarette butt" is "insane". Half of all people are less intelligent than the average person...
  25. I took a few field trips in the back of a highschool teacher's truck. In Manitoba they only recently changed the laws on it, within the last few years. It used to be legal to have unbelted riders no matter where they were so long as all the seat belts were in use. I suspect that was more of an accident brought about by attempting to grandfather in cars that are older than mandatory belts than a deliberate attempt to make it legal, but there you go. Either way though, I wouldn't want anyone I cared about riding back there on an interstate. Too much crazy unpredictable $#!& can happen.
