Let's solve my brake line problem.
pingpong replied to DirtyComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Call Matt at Independent4x. I think he xan get you longer lines, and the brackets you need, and YES he does ship to Canada. I think he does that once a week. He can also have the lines custom made for you. That means any length. Remember too long, is better then too short. You can always use springs to keep you brake lines out the way. Patrick -
Yeah that bumper took some serous abuse  As soon as MJ jeff comes to my house it is his, as well as my rock rails I used on my rig before we chopped it. It was made mostly out of 1/4 C-channel, and 1/4 wall rubing. It was not light, so kep that in mind when copying my Design. If I was to make it again I would make it a touch wider so I could incorparate some kind of tail light guard. Also keep in mind that once you cut the metal off, its hard to put it back on  and even harder to stop there

Give Matt at Independent4X a call, I just bought a similar kit minus the sway bar bushings for a lil over half the price they are selling it for. Be advised it is a PITA to install

A guy in our club took his brand new (less then 7 days old) Liberty out on the trail  He says he can't wait to put some M/T's on it and try some harder trails

I didnt make this run, but a few ppl from the club did, so I will post up the video links. http://besrk.zippyvideos.com/gallery.z and now you see why I want bigger axles and tires
-
First decide what your ultimate coil is. By this I mean a Daily driver / w/e trail rider, Or do I want a pretty mall crawler, or abused rock crawler? Then decide on the tires and rims you want to run. This can add big bucks to your build, depending on the tires and rims you chose you choose. After you decide rim and tire size, then its time to pick axles you want to run. ANything bigger then a 33" I strongly recommend different axle, especially if you plan on wheeling your rig. 37" or larger start looking at 1 ton axles. Now its time for a lift. Pick a lift with a good reputation, and good customer service. Thats all I will say on liftt companies. Now that you have a built rig it is time to put some ocupant protection in. Up till lat Nov I thought it was foolish to spend money on a cage and stuff like that. Now I wonder why I ever wheeled w/o one. Keep in mind my wheeling style might be different then yours, BUT I seen a stock TJ roll on a "poseing rock" in a level field. Also don't do like I did, and slowly build your rig up. I am on my third lift kit, 3rd set of tires, I have been thru 3 rear axle so far, and 2 front. I am in the process of acquiring parts for my next build up. I am going D60's next front and rear, on 42" with H1 beadlocks. A lil drastic :? Yeah, but I don't like being denied cause don't have enough approach angle

They look like TnT U-bolt eliminators. The only problem I se with just welding on another set of perches is the centering bolt. THis is partially used to help hold the axle in place and to prevent the axle from walking on the springs. Also with the bolts so far off the spring pack there is a good chance the leaves will fan out when flexed. Not to be of a deal, unless there is enough force exerted on the bolts for them to shear. New TJ D30 shafts in an old D30
pingpong replied to holeski's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When Ihad my disco axle I used a D44 seal in the outer part of the VD housing, and it held up fine ror well over a yr, until I got in the hurry on the trail changing an axle shaft. Good info all the same Patrick -
I like to listen to classical music :D Yeah right  I am an old school metal head

The club I belong to is doing a run to Paragon. We are expecting around 10-15 rigs from our club to go. Here is a link to the post on the website. If you want to go chime in, and tell us where you will be meeting us http://mpjai.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=44566#44566 Patrick

You are going to have to relocate your spring perches. On the XJ they are wider apart. YOu can go buy new paerches from Advance auto parts through their Mr. Gasket catalog, or you can make you own out of tubing. The only axles that swap directly in the rear of a MJ is an axle out of another MJ. The front axles, from the TJ,ZJ,xj all bolt right in. I am glad that we pointed this out to you before you went and tried this. Patrick

Yet another manual to auto trans Q
pingpong replied to Cabz's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I am not sure about the TCU wiring or none of that. What I do know is The TCU's stay the same all the way up to at least 96. Also I would try and swap in a 92 and later aw4 so you can get the 23 spline output. The only reason why I say this is cause most aftermarket t-case are 23 spline inputs. -
88 comanche project (continued)
pingpong replied to 88swampedmj's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I like it, cause it almost always matches whatever I am wearing :D I see a postal jeep in the yard screaming for some full widths and cage  Maybe even a 4.3 :D -
The problem with trying to sell a D35 is everybody is upgrading to something better. with everything you listed, you probrably would get more if you put it on ebay and was to sell just the gears and lockers, then sell the shafts and brake parts in another auction. Problem is the MJ rear only fits MJ's. XJ/YJ/TJ/ZJ owners would all have to make new mounting points.
-
750 for a running driveable MJ... Sounds like you are stealing it from them. More then likley the t-case was protesting be shifted in tho a 4wd mode where there was no tire slippage available, or you didnt pull it into gear all the way. IT is not uncommon to have to drive forward and reverse to get the t-case to disengage. Patrick

I like the flat black look :D I hope you are talking about boxing the x-member up, and adding some reinforcement around where the LA's mount to the frame. I boxed my second x-member using 1/4 flat stock you can buy at LOwes. Not the cheapest route, but the easiest to get steel. Patrick

fan,CC, and interior lights..... Whats that stuff  Check the ground, and the vacum lines on the back of the heater control panel to see if they are working properly. CC, mine never worked either, and I never tried to get it to work. Patrick

I will weigh in on this cause I am running the 8.8, and thught about running the toy axles, also almost did the waggy axle thing too. The 8.8 straight out the box has 4.10's lsd, and disc brakes if you get it off a 96 or newer. The bad gear slection is limited. only up to 4.56 in the aftermarket, Ford has 4.88's available through the stealership. The Axle is almost an 1.5 inches narrower, and If you plan on flexing your rig, wheel spacers would be needed. Toy axles. Cheap. Center sections drop out making swapping gears relatively easy. Disc brake kits are available. Gear and locker selection is also great. Waggy axles. D44 has a huge amount of support. Can be found cheap in an old rusted out FSJ. Forgot to mention the isuzu 44. Disc brakes, 4.56 gears, and did I mention easy to find. Keep in mind all of the above axles are good up to about a 37" maybe a 38 if you run alloy shafts. Much bigger then that and you have to go with D60's or bigger  Swapping the rear axle can be accomplished with minimal amount of tools and moderate wrenching experience. Front axle swap is a lil more difficult and will require moderate to severe experience especially if you plan on welding on all your own brakets. Now for the disclaimer These are my opinions, and not neccesarily those of fellow board members.

Coil Spring Spacer Price High?
pingpong replied to feerocknok's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The only thing different between the XJ and the MJ is the rear suspension. EVERYTHING up front is the same from the tranny crossmember forward. I would never go back to that susp[ension shop again if I was you. Patrick -
Coil Spring Spacer Price High?
pingpong replied to feerocknok's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Coil spacers should cost around 30 bucks for the good poly ones. -
Mine had 4+ the overload, and mine was stock. So I don't know what that means :? But know I am running 7 leaves

anyone run 31s with SOA lift?
pingpong replied to Oizarod115's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have been running Rusty's 6.5 coils for over 2 yrs now, and I bought them used, and after adding a winch bumper, and a winch, I am still sitting at over 7". Normally rear springs are worse unless you get custom ones. I have seen RE's 4" rears springs give a guy almost 8"s. It was so missed matched that he wnet out and bout 6" front springs and a 1" coil spacer, and he stilled had a lil of the hotrod fron lean. -
It really isnt that bad w/o the windows or doors. It was a little rough when I wheeled in Feb and it snowed the whole day on Saturday. I got more cold then wet, but still kinda miserable. I kinda wish I would have made some trail doors, but it really doesn't make much of a difference when you are wearing 5 point harnesses. can't really lean out anyways, especially if you are cinched down right

To me it isn't worth a thing... but I don't have a bed anymore :D Personally I would just herculine the bed if it was me.

My Comanche buildup, 4.0L swap
pingpong replied to commando14's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I waqs talking about the way you have the top rear spring eye mounted. It looks like you kinda did an elliptical setup, but not sure. When we set my rear shocks up, we decided since most of the wheeling I do is off camber, that mounting the shocks straight up and down was best. Axle wrap isn't that big of an issue with my rig as the alcans come with an anti wrap leaf. Even still I need to build man antiwrap bar eventually. I think we will do that when we swap the D60's under my rig  Love the paint job. I think you would have been happier swapping in a built 4.3 or 350. its just about the same amount of work. I am on the prowl for an mid 90's 4wd balzer or s-10, that has been wrecked. hat way I can get it cheap, and get everything to do the swap.
