Brett, No I am not a very good multi tasker so chewing gum and walking at the same time is not an option  NO if you can find a way to do that joystick thing with reverse and the 1-2 shift I would definately be intersted in that :D Most of the time my wheel speed rarely gets fast enough for it to make that shift, and when it does, it is cause I am flogging it, and need the wheel speed. BTW seen a small pic of your rig in one of those Mags.. good job

Well I was looking at Novak-adapters website trying to find out what I needed to do to swap in a d300, and ran across this article, about swapping motors, and trans into xj/mjs. Figured I would share. I almost think this needs to be in FAQ's or in a sticky http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/xj_swap.htm Patrick

To be honest Pete, I really don't know. I just know one of my buddies worked at the dealer, and somehow got a hold of the knuckles form a WJ, and swapped them onto his TJ. Of course this was before Terra came out with their d30 hi-steer conversion. This is a nice conversion, but save your money and don't buy the steering links if you decide to go this way. Do like I ended up doing, and install 1ton chevy TRE and ream out your stock knuckle. BUy some 18tpi threaded insserts for 1.5X.25 DOM and call it good. All told cost me 78 bucks to build my new center link. Patrick

Its WJ control arms. While you are at it pull the whole front axles, that way you get the hi-steer they came with. (passenger side knuckles are different. Very similar to the Terra flex Hi-steer knuckle) If I knew anyone auctually would install 3.55's I would have never thrown away those 3.55 gears and axle housings. Persoanllty I would swap in the whole front axle instead of just changing the gears. After you buy an install kit and soend the better part of a day doing the gear swap, it would have been just as easyto swap axles. Patrick

My rig isnt driven on the road

I see a few flaws like a 4000 lb winch  You winch should be sized to be 1.5 time s the vehicles weight at a minimum. Running the np242 case might not be the best idea, but I can't comment on it, cause I have never run one. To me it sounds like a lot more work then it is worth... Just my tho0ughts though

Nice concept, but I thought the point of running an auto was so you didnt have to shift :? The only thing I would change on my auto is the ability to go from low to reverse for those near endo situation. I got a ? while we are on the subject of aw4's, has anyone converted a column shifted one to a floor shifter using an aftermarket shifter? Patrick

So will a ZJ box. I have "heard" that a 3/4 ton chevy box will bolt in with "minor" mods, I am stil looking into this, cause I am going to need a better box when I swap my 60's under my rig. Patrick

To be honest with you , I pulled the skids off of every MJ/XJ I ever owned, cause they were more of a PITA then they were worth. Plus up till the last run I made in Feb, I never hit anything up in that area  Makes for a pita to change your alt BTW

I can't believe it, No one mentioned the possibility of u-joints causign the vibe either. They can also cause the shakes as well.

Sounds like it might be bad bearings  :( I don't know if you removed the shafts and mixed them up, but they are slightly different in length. Patrick

Stainless Steel Brake Lines
pingpong replied to PRLJEEP's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Crown ships theirs with clips and the brackets. They can be ordered in any length, with any ends you choose as well. Rsuty's probrably makes thier own lines to D.O.T. standards and sells them by the piece. This make them very profitable -
I was thinking it would be very noticeable. I know towing my rig on the trailer, I can tell within in a mile if the rig is too far forward or to the rear. Also, I can't believe no one tried to stop this guy, and point out the fact of waht he was doing. Patrick

Its a nice rig. I hope it gets used on the trails instead of being a blvd cruiser. I am more into the used and abused look personally

My setup is the MSD 2225 pump, a summit fuel filter kit, and the RCI fuel cell. PLus some various AN fittings and Inverted flair fittings. Basically what you have to do is reduce the AN fittings down to standard fiitngs. I used plain old rubber fuel line, instead of steel braided to save a few bucks. I also used the stock charcoal canister as my vent. If you truly want an indepth parts list, I have to go to my garge and count all the fittings and stuff that we used. THIS IS NOT A CHEAP MOD. fuel cell was around 225, pump was around 91, the fuel filter was 25, the AN fittings were around 45 for the 3, plus various other fittings. All told it was around 500 just for the fuel cell setup. Not what I would call a cheap mod, but well worth it if there is a chance of a flop or roll in your future. BTW the stock fuel tank does an excellent job in preventing this if it is in good repair. Patrick

I also think location has a lot to do with howmany you see. Up north or further out west where it snows a lot, it seems that the road salt ate a lot of these jeeps up. where as down south the farmers used and abused them to nothing.

Stainless Steel Brake Lines
pingpong replied to PRLJEEP's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Depending on the amount of lift you have, and tha mount of flex you have will depend on how long of lines you need. That being said, My personal experience tells me a 30" rear line is good for rigs like mine :D and up front a 24" ones work good as well. Crown makes top notch products, that is what brand I run. Also that is a decent price. My rear one was a custom one, and it was 40 bucks with shipping. Patrick -
It all depends on how many skills you have, and what kinda bank you got. I know of 2 ppl in the club I belong to (both yj's) with the 2.5 and one is running a NP435, and the other is running the NV4550. Both of them have killer crawl ratio. Both have had zero tranny issues after doing that swap.

You have to keep in mind that all of those shows be it trucks, horsepower tv, xtreme4x4, are all out here to make Spike tv money. By far the best show they have out there is chop cut and rebuild on SpeedTV. Those builders actually have skills. Not saying the other shows don't. It has all ready been pointed out that anyone can bolt parts on  Extreme 4x is also cool. Even though they do have every cool tool in the universe, and what seems like an unlimited budget. Patrick

I see them all the time around were I live, and most are on the road, in decnt shape. I always make mental notes where they are at, so I can look for them to come up for sale  I do miss not having one to drive everyday

All I have to say is WOW  I can't imagine that thing towed worth a $h!t like that. I mean with it being in park, wouldn't it feel like you were draging it? Also with the tire shredding wouldnt you get killer vibes. Patrick
-
Thats the tru poor boy way of doing it :D I know I have one. I wil give you my take on it, and keep the fact that I had my MJ built. When I started out the lift and tires were all I wanted. Then I started off roading, then I get into rocks  This is when things changed. I realized a roll cage is more important then traction or lift, but this took a few near flops for me to decide this. So I say cage before lift or lockers, especially if you wheel alot. If not get the lift and tires and call it good. Patrick

I forgot what yr the break was, but I know the later fuel pumps have around 140psi and the older ones was a range of 40-60psi according to my source at napa. Wether or not you have issues.. I don't know. AS for using a stock TJ tank as a fuel cell.. I don't understand why you would go through all the trouble of mounting, wiring, plumbing in a tank that doesn't offer any more eficency or protection then a stock tank. Just my opinion though. Patrick

I don't know how to post pics but I think my sig has a link to my rig. By no means is how I am buiiding my rig for everyone. iTs just a wheeling thing, and I like the way it looks. patrick
