Water Pump Recommendation?

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I recently bought an '88 2WD Comanche with a 4.0L and I'm pretty sure the Peugot 5-speed trans. It runs alright, starts off a little rough when cold but after it's warm it idles steady at 700RPM and runs very smooth.

After I got it I immediately started doing basic maintenance. Spark plugs and an oil change. I noticed the serpentine belt had a small squeek so I changed that out along with the smooth idler pulley. Anyway, after I replaced those things and tensioned the new belt, it seems like my squeek has turned into a full-blown squeel. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the water pump.

Shopping online I'm noticing these water pumps come with different hub sizes? Is that right? Is there an easy way to identify which one I have without removing it from the engine first? I'll probably go ahead and do the grooved idler pulley as well when I get to doing the water pump replacement. Appreciate any insight yall can give me. These trucks are so cool!

I do use NAPA water pumps. No real issues. I did install a MOPAR on one of my XJs. Best bet for reliability. As for variations, as I remember there are two different lengths or heights for water pumps. This matched to the pulley your original water pump has.

Well, I installed the new Mopar water pump and replaced the hoses. Seems to be working well. Now I'm chasing down a noise from another pulley. Does anyone know the correct part number for this pulley??

The smooth one to the right of it was real easy to find at a parts store, but this one is a pain in the @$$. The one I got from Oreillys is plastic and did not have the correct depth/shape to clear the bracket it mounts to. The original one is metal/grooved and has a deep side to help it clear that metal. Anyone familiar?

AC Delco is good, I had a FlowKooler for about 2 days and had nothing but overheating issues and weeping coolant from the pump.

Yikes. I read good things about flowkooler and decided to order one. Mines in the mail. Hopefully I don't have similar issues...

You have no AC?

:yeahthat:

I also ran the AC Delco Gold pump after pulling a flowkooler. The flowkooler requires significantly more fluid capacity ie much larger radiator.

Yep here's what I got. That top-left pulley is what I'm looking for. Going to go through your list as much as I can. Let me know if anything bad jumps out at you in the picture. The hose that runs from the radiator cap to the surge tank is pretty close to the fan. I think I can change that just by rerouting it.

I think Hornbrod and GoJeep had isses with Hi-Flow water pumps, Hesco and Flowcooler. They had to put a restriction in the upper hose. I think Go-Jeeps website is still up.

Factory Non AC...

unscrew it, if it woobles replace the bearing

It's an A/C bypass/blockoff/ or idler pulley, depending on what site or store you're searching.  Last time I checked they made a new one for the HO engines but not the Renix ones.

So far the AC Delco w/p is doing well.  I had to replace the AutoZone w/p 2x, both times started making scary noises.  The first one left a scar on the outside of cyl #1 water jacket.

I believe the Hesco and flowkooler are practically the same unit. The Hesco bored thermostat housing was also an issue contributing to overheating. The oem system can’t really be significantly improved upon without a significant capacity upgrade in the radiator. Novak or the old JeepSpeed Griffith come to mind. Otherwise, the oem components are the way to go imo.
Best system I ran was ac delco gold water pump (or the oem Mopar), Mopar hoses (with the anti-collapse spring), Mopar 195 t stat with air bleed hole, oem 7 blade mech fan with oem shroud, later xj style 10 blade e fan and a Mishimoto radiator. AC full blast in the tropics going up long steep grades with zero issues. It’s just been my experience that most of these cooling system “upgrades” don’t work well as stand alone “upgrades”. Even on a stroker I’d go with a stock system (maybe mishimoto or cold case radiator)

i used the hesco water pump and t stat housing on my old 88 mj.the w/p had a bad bearing after 2 days of use that of course they wouldnt warranty and i never could get the t stat housing to seal right.i put a parts store gmb pump and the factory housing back and had no problems.

Heso does or used to make a spiral vane water pump.  When I bought one, it was like the Flowcooler. The impellor was a one piece though. I think the original Flowcoolers, they riveted a plate on top of the impellor. They would sometimes come off from reports. I did read on another web board the they recently bought a Hesco and it had their spiral impellor. I think a GMP housing. So, worth the $$$, probably not. I think a possible or advertised 5 hp gain.

I did talk to the guy I bought my stroker kit from. He just said a stock water pump. I'll probably use the Hesco (Flowcooler impellor) on it. If $$ are there, I am thinking a Davis radiator. I also want to change the transmission fitting to the front and the overflow bard to the drivers side.

Also, there is the thermostat to talk about. I would avoid Mr. Gasket. I have has two of them fail. One came apart. The other, just locked up. These were the Hi-flow types. I have a Stewart planned for the Stroker. I did get some NOS Carrols and another brand off of E-Bay to try one some other motors. I do have a mini-stroker build going on for the MJ. I'd probably just go Super Stant for the Thermostat for the OP.

That was GMB high flow that was a two piece impeller design (at least my GMB high flow was like that). The flowkooler has been a billet spiral one piece impeller for a great many years. Whether or not Hesco originally designed the first billet impeller on a 4.0 water pump I don’t know but a very large number of hesco’s parts these days are rebranded markups.

  • 2 weeks later...

Idler pulley came in but was the wrong part. I'm actually pretty sure the seller sent me the wrong part in the correct box (box said PN 53002903)..

All of the pictures of the part online look like this (the original pulley looks like this too):

Crown® 53002903 - Drive Belt Idler PulleyIdler Pulley (53002903) | Jeepey - Jeep parts, spares and accessories

The actual pulley I got looks like this and does not fit:

Idler Pulley (XJ 4.0L) (53010228AB) | Jeepey - Jeep parts, spares and ...

Those fins that run from the inner bearing area to the outer edge rub against the metal mounting point for the AC. So buyers beware I guess? Just posting this for anyone who needs the same pulley. If anyone knows of a reputable source for parts like these I'd really appreciate it.
