Unibodies are tough.

I like Jeep and Toyotas. Jeep rhymes with cheap and they are around here. I've killed several Yodas (one spectacular one at 110 mph when a rod let go and ventilated the hood!) but no Jeep motors to the point they didn't make it home (several with thrown rods that kept on driving!)

a$$holes are like this. You either have one or you have 2 if you are one as well.

Most fun I've seen on a Toyota lately is the "Toyota Research Development Offroad" sticker. Who doesn't laugh when they see TRD Offroad?

Jeep has $#!& the bed in the past 10 years or so with lame designs and the killing off of what people really want to stretch into the POS they think people want.

Lets face it, Nobody makes stuff like they used to.

The Original Toyota Landcruisers, (the original FJs), were/are Tough as Nails.

The Old Dodge powerwagons, would pull that CJ back up over the cliffs edge!

The Old Brittish Landrovers, could take you and yer family just about anywhere!

The old Broncos, The Old International Scouts, The Old Blazers,,,,

You name it Nobody makes it like they used to!

Yeah, fuel economy standards and crash worthiness have a way of changing what companies can produce. Out of curiosity, in you guys' humble opinion, where does the new Rubicon rate in that list of classics? Or the new Power Wagon? Or how about the newer SuperDutys with high-pinion coil-over Dana 60s up front? How about Dodge's equivalent? What about the new diesels pushing 700 ft-lbs of torque? It's fun making fun of the Compass, but don't live too much in the past. It's not always all it's cracked up to be. Front drum brakes suck, 260 U-joints suck, and most of the really tough rigs from back in the day were indestructible because they had anemic engines and/or tiny tires. Don't kid yourselves, the best examples of today's engineering could walk all over the old-school technology of yesteryear. There are just too few examples of it, and more and more of the wussy 4x4s.

There are others out there making an attempt, like the Nissan Xterra (rear locker, Bilstein shocks, 32" tires, etc) and if you can resist clicking on the chrome mirrors, grille and recovery loops, you can get the H3 with some impressive gear.

To me, IFS is not unto itself a deal breaker if it can be bandaided with gears, lockers, cool engines or bigger tires. :D

I personally think the new power wagons rock excpet for the price tag, and no diesel option  I think the ford super duty's are way cool.. just wish their diesels had a better reputation (newer ones that is). As for the Rubicon.. I wish they were priced more affordably... close to 30k for a jeep is a lil steep if you ask me.

What I was going to say exactly. But the new Rubi's are built really well, and some of the features make it great factory for off-road, stuff you would have to add to the TJs.

You're not the only one crying about that. There might be one in the works for that reason...

Four Wheeler had done a review and figured there'd be too much destruction if a diesel was put up front, or, at least, that's what Chrysler was worried about.

Amazing truck though.

Thats what Four Wheeler says, but remember they are basically an advertising medium for all makes, so anything I read in the mags I take with a grain of salt. I have seen diesel chevy and fords on the trail, and even one or two nicely built dodges as well.. so I say hogwash.

  • 2 years later...

Was gonna add my opinion but I guess its too late, well probably not.

Here goes:

:USAflag: + :Canadaflag: = (Because We made it)

I don't care what you drive, and I spent a whole year building my rig, I'll pull you out whatever, whenever or wherever you are. You start jaw jacking Jeep while I'm pulling you out and I'll spit a hell fury all over your rig on the way outta the bog. Then Smile and Nod.

So true....no one makes a rig like my 48:

....but then again, I absolutely love the KJ I bought the wife last year. Great urban assault vehicle. When they get cheap like $2000 or so, I'd like to SFA one for the trail.
