The jeep dont like to start
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to NewToJeeps's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'd replace the CPS sensor, they don't cost much, and I'd bet thats the cause of your starting problem. As for the oil pan/rear seal. it is a PAIN! You'll need to raise the vehicle, and support the frame, AND support the front axle then you need to disconnect the stearing stablizer, and the front shocks where they mount to the front axle, then lower the front axle, (this gives about an extra inch of clearance to take out the pan). THEN you can unbolt the oil pan. once the oil pan is lowered some, you can then reach inside and disconnect the oil pump, (two bolts). at this point you will finally have enough room to squeeze the oil pan out, some force might be required, (I kicked it and cursed alot). REALLY it's a pain to do it. I made the mistake of NOT replacing the rear main seal,, so'll I'll be doing mine again soon. and yes the one piece gasket, (available from NAPA), fits just fine,, -
Death Wobble Poll - Part 2
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to Eagle's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Pete,, what about the front brake disks,, I had a bad wobble problem in my YJ,,, I never did figure it out. One day the original front disk busted loose, at about 255,000 miles,( there was a recall that I never bothered with). well I replaced both the fronts disks, and the wobble was gone, BYE BYE,, I do believe this could be the cause for ALOT of people. My YJ is a 91, 1991 and earlier jeeps could have had a front disk that was made of a composite metal, where the center "HUB" part was a different metal then the disk part, this could cause the front disks to warp and or rust, creating a steering "pull" when stopping,,, I never even thought twice that this would have caused a death wobble,, but when I replaced the disks, the problem went away,, I dunno :dunno: maybe these MJ's are suffering the same issue and nobody realizes it,,, -

reverse lights
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to JeeperjohnfromPA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks Lead,, That information looks very helpful. adding it to the to do list this weekend -
So my Manche has been on the road for a few weeks now, it has a few minor issues I am trying to resolve, One of them is the reverse lights. ALL my tail lights, park, brake, flashers, turn signals work. BUT my reverse lights don't work. The bulbs look to be good, and the sockets also apear ok, I figure it must be a bad wire somewhere,, I had a problem like this on my YJ, which turned out to be a bad wire on the transmission, but that was a 5speed, and this is an automatic,, can anyone tell me where the wire(s) on the automatic transmission for the reverse lights are?? Thanks in advance.

fulltime 4wheel light
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to JeeperjohnfromPA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I checked all the lines, nothing looks bad, and all appears connected. So I'll try replacing the vacum switch, where can I get one, does NAPA have them? is it hard to swap out? any pointers are welcome -

Thanks Wildman! I learned how to wield on this old truck! In fact my friend who has been welding for years can't believe how good I can now weld, with only a cheepie stick welder! If you follow this thread from the start, you'll see that ALOT welding was needed. but I also have Harry's U-Pull it only about 2hrs away, so I aquired a new drivers door and fender from a XJ. Still need quite a few minor things fixed and or re-installed,, but all the major stuff is working! -

Here as promissed a few pictures. First picture is of it's First load,, (was alot more on it), I remembered to snap a picture before it was totally unloaded. Looks a little greenish in the one picture,, It is actually a Dark gunmetal color. -
ok, so I just put my manche on the road last week. everything works good. however, my dash light which indicates FULL TIME, for the 4wheel drive is stuck ON I know it's not in fourwheel drive, and I want to make the light work correctly again, (it worked properly right until I put it on th road). I am wondering if anyone has run into this problem before? is it a switch in the linkage? or the actuator on the front axle? or perhaps a short in the electrical? any advice, before I poke around figuring it out?

Here it is June 2008,, a little over a year since I first got my old MJ. I'm happy to say, it's running, and passed inspection last week. It's a Total Dog compared to the wife's Cherokee, but still it Runs stron g and everything works! I'll post a few pictures for you all to see, I put alot of time into this old beast,, just this past few weeks I put new brake pads up front, new tires on the front, new oil pan gasket, new valve cover gasket, new Crankshaft sensor, new coil, cap, rotor plugs and wires. Just in time too as the dwarves inside my TJ's transmission are really making ALOT of noise! Yeeeehaaaa! -
go to photobucket.com then search for Jeeperjohnfrompa. I've got some scans there from an old sales brochure,
