What is considered not stock

The more I learn, the more I understand how special stock is. I'm curious what is in bounds for within stock upgrades and alterations? I recently purchased 10 hole jeep wheels but don't know if thats considered a non-stock upgrade. Even though they are OEM they did not come with my sporTruck. I just want to make sure I keep things period correct. I want to basically get it to a showroom stock jeep, but really don't know whats in bounds.

In my opinion, and if I had it to do over again. don't change a think that can't be returned to the previous condition with more than nuts and bolts. Like wheels and seats. don't cut grind chop or weld anyrhing at all. Wheels can be switched back.

Thank you ! That is a huge help, I am very excited about owning a Comanche. I do not want to make knee jerk decisions.

And please for the love of everything save any and all old parts and don't throw away anything no matter how simple or common it might seem.

 

I know it might sound like silly advice but I wish I would have known how rare parts were gonna get 10yrs ago I coulda saved alot.

 

Your truck is an amazing specimen of a stock mj. Do all you can to preserve it. Unless you ever want to sell it and ship it to indiana for safe keeping.......

Ill have to start organizing an area for parts before the parental unit says something! Thank you so much, I really am starting to understand what I have. Someone the other day tried to purchase it from me at a stoplight. I worry about racking the mileage up on it too much, I drive sometimes 400 miles in a week.

My '88 MJ is basically stock except for a few things (rear bumper, radio, B pillar lights, Eliminator stickers) but it has something that is period correct although probably not from a Jeep.   Each side of the bed has 3 aluminum cleats or tie downs.   I have never seen them on a Jeep and I don't think any other truck either.   The original owner and then his daughter owned it for about 20 years.   They lived in a resort town where boats are common and I suspect they are boat parts.   The fellow I bought it from was big into boating and was pretty sure that's where they came from too.   

 

I removed them when I had the bed Line-xd.   I was used to seeing them on of course and it drove me nuts not to.   I couldn't wait to put them back on.   They're practical but I have to be careful because I've caught my shirt or jacket on them several times. I think they've been on for most of the life of the Jeep and out of "respect" for the previous owners (I'm #7) although not stock they're staying.

they look very much like boat parts. They are really square and look like they belong. That black and silver looks amazing.

Thanks.   I have kayaks but I don't know very much about "real" boats.   :laugh:  My MJ comes in handy for what I have!

 

I should also point out that my 10 hole wheels have been powder coated, so not original.   I got them that way.   I have a second set that aren't great but might be able to be polished.  Also, the non stock rear mud flaps are now gone.   I later installed a sport bar and the kayaks still fit.

The goal with mine is to return to the exact model it was on the showroom floor.  With minor mechanicals.  As such mine is an Eliminator. I have found out on this forum, the eliminator wheels are those ten hole versions you have.  Except.....only the Eliminator has the fake rivets around the edge of the rim.  The ones you have came off of a Cherokee.  I did not know this til after I bought my rims.  I got very lucky.  All four had rivets.  I also have a 30 year old memory backed up by a few pictures as my Dad had one new.  You're is so close to original I have to second the opinion above, don't do any type of mod that requires a torch.  Replace floor pans if needed, a good paint job, freshen up lenses, etc. is good but no crazy lifts.  Don't make that one a rock crawler.  These trucks arent $30,000 collectors, but they are getting rare and originals even rarer.  Prices are going up slowly.  Something to be said for a 30 year old original survivor.

Wheels are bolt-on and don't alter the vehicle. Run whatever you think looks good. To a purist, "stock" is what came on your vehicle from the factory -- which, for you, would be those steel rims. If you ever entered it in a car show that would be judged on originality, that's what you should have on it. Otherwise, pick any Jeep wheel you like. The "correct" factory option for your year would be the 10-spoke turbine wheels.

 

Allow to give you an example. As I have mentioned on occasion, before the XJ and MJ existed I was into AMC Javelins and AMXs. Went to a show once and the contest for best-in-show easily came down to two AMXs. The deciding factor? The '68 Javelin and AMX didn't have a sunshade over the instrument cluster, the '69 did. One of the two was a '68, but the owner had installed a '69 dash cowl because otherwise you couldn't read the instruments on a sunny day. Completely bolt-on modification, could have been reversed in five minutes. But he left the '69 dash cowl on the '68 AMX, and that's what tipped the scale. He lost.

 

My '87 Comanche came with steel wheels. I'm running it with '90 5-spoke Jeep alloys at the moment. When it's back on the road, I'll get new tires on proper 10-spoke alloys and run those. They're correct for the year and model, but they were an option on Pioneers and mine didn't come from the factory with that particular option. Close enough for me, and can be reversed easily (if you can find a set of the 9-slot steel rims with the stainless trim rings in good condition.

everything depends on your goals for your truck.  :L:  Others will have differing opinions but yours matters the most. 

 

What do you want to do with your truck?  Where do you see it in 5 years?  10 years?  It personally terrifies me to daily drive something that I want to hang on to for the rest of my life.  crap happens on the roads.  in the last month we saw a couple super DUPER nice MJs taken out by plain ol' traffic accidents. :(

This parts manual is a nice document to keep around:

In my opinion, if you can find the part in that manual then it is in bounds for "stock" and period correct.  Those wheels you bought are on page 7 of PDF.

There's a big difference between "stock" and "period correct." The two terms are not mutually inclusive.

"Period correct" could be accessories bought from a J.C. Whitney catalogue back when the vehicles were new or close to it.   I can remember guys in an MG club I belonged to 30 or so years ago that seemed to specialize in that kind of thing.   They'd track down all kinds of weird things mostly for a laugh.   Very little of it made it on to their cars, thank goodness.   None of it was stock but some of it was fun to look at and it was representative of the period.   Has anyone ever put curb feelers on their MJ?   :laugh:

I have one of each (stock and modded) and they both float my boat in their own special way. :D  add to that the dreamer truck.  The empty shell behind the barn that could be anything and allows me to dream up whatever I want. :comanche:  drag truck?  turbo diesel?  1 tons and 40s?  Eliminator clone?  anything is possible because it's a blank slate.

Multiple posts with multiple opinions.

 

In the end it's your truck. Stock is stock there is no way around that. One you change any option it's not stock. In the end do what makes you happy. 

I personally am in the keep a perfect one perfect. I am still all for upgrades that makes it more functional. On the other hand if it's already been modified it's a good ahead pass. Still don't believe in chopping it up though. Needs and bolts are easy to swap back out if you ever want to.

I personally love mine exactly how it is. I DD every day no matter what the weather is.It's mine I built what I wanted. It's not really pretty but it's what's under the surface that counts.Some day I will get everything done I want to. Then I see myself getting a 2wd to keep nice and only driving on nice days. You can't only have 1 Jeep!!

That is not the case, not with these trucks, not in this lifetime. 

 

 

A Hurst/Core shifter, a Fey bumper, a modern receiver/radio, will not add value and will not reduce value. Either way it is what he paid for it, a $6000 MJ.

a thing's value could certainly be monetary, but in this case for me it isn't.  Makes me smile every time I see my new baby. :D  Sorta makes me feel like a big time collector who located a barn find of his dream car.  Sure it's worth some money, but that's secondary to finding that little piece of history, a snap shot of how things were back in the day (except I'm adding headrests to my bench).  And I enjoying the hunt for old school aftermarket parts (though I wish I had started the hunt a decade ago).  It's a hobby, just like any other.  The goals are personal and differ between owners.  These are mine.  Caring about the money implies I would sell it later on and I don't intend to.  But I do care about it's originality (to a point) because that alone makes me smile.  :D

My mistake. 

 

Added Value could also be realized through desire. 

 

One may desire a particular X over Y and Z because of some effect. In this case 'stock'. 

 

When I stated his $6000 MJ is a, and will be, a $6000 MJ.............I meant, it is what it is, and unless he does something to specifically devalue it, it will continue to be what it is. Nothing more and nothing less. 

 

Adding an aftermarket item does not necessarily make it more or less special.
