Rare 1986 Only Factory Spare Tire Safety Bar and Hooks on Ebay

These factory spare tire safety bars were offered for one year only (1986). It will fit MJ LWB trucks with the stock size spare tire. The slotted holes for the J-bolts are already in the frame, so it's a pure PnP factory bolt-on piece. Might work with SWB trucks but  :dunno: . I wanted it but it won't work with my 31" spare......

That seems like a good idea considering that the cables snap sometimes. I wonder why they quit offering it?

It is a good idea. Probably quit making it because the stock tire size increased.

That'd be pretty easy to duplicate with some threaded J-hooks and a length of C-channel steel.

BUT it is more fun when you discover the cable has broken and your spare fell off somewhere down the road and it is just not there.

 

Fortunately for me, my winch cable broke while the truck was parked in front of my garage.  I discovered the spare just sitting there when I got back home form a quick trip to Costco.

You could have routed your pipes so you could still fit the spare underneath......

The only thing my truck will ever haul again, is @$$. :P

The 86 in the JY here locally still has the spare up under the bed.

 

Are those hooks only for 86?  Was this a transition year?

It will not fit a SWB, the keyhole slots are covered and in the wrong location, you would have to drill new ones.

I want to say it was a flat bar that went across the tire.  but it's been awhile.
